Phases, roles and openings of a group discussion: excerpt from page 31 of the BBA 111 notes
Excerpt from page 31
Phases of a GD
A group discussion moves through four phases. First, the topic is announced and you get one to three minutes to note points. Second, one member initiates the discussion and sets its direction. Third, in the body, members add points, examples and counter-points so the group explores every side. Fourth, one or more members summarise the main views fairly. Knowing the phases tells you when each kind of contribution fits.
Roles people play in a GD
Positive roles help the group: the initiator, the information giver, the clarifier, the gatekeeper who invites silent members, the mediator and the summariser. Negative roles count against you: the dominator, the aggressor, the silent spectator, the deviator who drags the GD off topic, the repeater and the fish-market creator who speaks over everyone.
Seven ways to initiate a GD
A good start gives high visibility; a vague one harms you. The notes show seven openings on the topic "Work from home is the future of work":
- Definition: explain what working from home means before arguing.
- Fact or statistic: use a figure only if you are sure of it.
- Question: "If an employee is equally productive at home, why come to office every day?"
- Quotation: short and well known, and only if you remember it exactly.
- Short story: a relative who now works from another city and visits office once a month.
- Shock statement: "Offices may become meeting rooms, not workplaces", then explain.
- Both sides: "It brings flexibility but also isolation; let us look at both sides."
The key point on this page: initiate only if you understand the topic and have two or three solid points. Give the group a direction, for example its impact on employees, companies and cities, and speak for about 45 to 60 seconds. An opening is a signpost, not a speech.
Do the BBA 111 notes cover the full GGSIPU syllabus?

How to write BBA 111 answers: labelled diagrams, two-definition openings and STAR examples
BBA 111 is assessed by your college through tests, viva and practical exercises, so written answers and spoken tasks both count. These BBA 111 Life Skills and Personality Development IPU notes give a fixed answer method for each kind of question.
- Definition questions. Open with one etymology line, two author definitions and your own simple version. For communication, the phrase "common understanding" must appear (exam tip, page 4).
- Process questions. Draw the labelled communication cycle with feedback returning to the sender and noise touching every stage; the notes say the diagram adds credit.
- Experience questions. Use STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result, with a number in the result.
Worked example: differentiate between hearing and listening
Hearing is the physical, passive process of receiving sound through the ears; listening is the mental, active process of receiving, understanding, remembering and responding. Close with the notes' key line: "We hear with our ears, but we listen with our mind."
Common mistakes the notes correct include treating "verbal" as oral only and writing only four Tuckman stages. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

Yes. The GGSIPU BBA scheme lists BBA 111 Life Skills and Personality Development as a NUES, value-added course with 2 credits and 2 lecture hours a week. The official BBA PDF does not print a marks split or a pass mark for BBA 111; it only lists the paper as NUES with 2 credits, and the scheme states no pass percentage. Do the BBA 111 notes follow the revised GGSIPU BBA syllabus?
Yes for the units. The revised BBA scheme on ipu.ac.in (w.e.f. 2024-25) keeps the same four BBA 111 units and hours as the January 2025 version, and the notes cover every listed topic.
