Booting and the functions of an operating system in business computing: excerpt from page 29 of the BBA 113 notes
Excerpt from page 29
Booting
Booting is the process of starting the computer and loading the operating system into main memory. When the power is switched on, the BIOS or UEFI runs the POST (Power On Self Test), and then the bootstrap loader loads the OS from the disk into RAM. Cold booting means starting from power-off; warm booting means restarting a computer that is already running, through Restart or Ctrl + Alt + Del.
The OS sits in the middle of four layers. The user works with application software such as MS Word, Excel, Chrome or Tally; the application talks to the operating system (Windows, Linux, macOS or Android); and the OS controls the hardware: CPU, memory, disk and input/output devices.
Need and objectives of an operating system
- Convenience: the computer becomes easy to use, and users need not know how the hardware works.
- Efficiency: the CPU, memory and devices are used well, without wastage.
- Resource management: the OS decides which program gets which resource, and when.
- Platform for applications: application software can run only on an OS.
- Security and control: data and programs are protected from unauthorised access.
- Error handling: hardware and software errors are detected and handled.
Functions of an operating system
- Process (CPU) management: a program in execution is a process. The OS decides which process gets the CPU, in what order and for how long (CPU scheduling), creates and ends processes, and handles deadlocks.
- Memory management: the OS tracks which part of RAM each program uses, allocates memory when a program starts, frees it when the program ends, and manages virtual memory.
- File management: data is organised into files and folders; the OS handles creating, naming, saving, copying, moving, deleting and searching files, and controls access rights.
- Device (I/O) management: all input and output devices are controlled through device drivers, and queues are managed, for example spooling of print jobs so several documents print one after another.
- Security and protection: user accounts, passwords, biometric login, firewalls and access permissions protect the system.

The BBA 113 notes answer 34 short-answer and 30 long-answer questions across 4 units, plus 53 Excel formulas.
Four exam-style questions, one per unit:
- Unit 1: Differentiate between RAM and ROM. Pointer: volatile read-write vs non-volatile read-only, with their types (page 20).
- Unit 2: What is a primary key? Pointer: a unique, never-blank field, such as Roll No (page 36).
- Unit 3: Differentiate between COUNT, COUNTA and COUNTIF. Pointer: numbers only, non-empty cells, cells meeting a condition (page 54).
- Unit 4 (long): Explain the OSI model with its seven layers. Pointer: the 7-layer diagram, each layer's job and data unit, then TCP/IP (page 69).

How to write BBA 113 answers: definition-plus-example short answers, comparison tables and Excel formula answers
BBA 113 has few numericals, so marks come from three habits the notes repeat: a clean definition, a real product as the example, and a comparison table whenever two terms are asked together.
- Short answers. Write the definition in one line, add one business or Indian example, and stop. The Unit 2 tip asks you to name a real product every time: Windows for an OS, Tally for accounting, MySQL for a DBMS, Python for an interpreter. An answer without an example reads as incomplete.
- Long answers on theory. Open with a diagram, then headings. For the functions of an OS, draw the user, application, OS and hardware layers first, then explain at least eight functions with one Windows example each, such as Task Manager or the printer queue. For characteristics of computers, use 8 to 10 headings and close with 3 or 4 limitations.
- Excel answers. Give meaning, steps, a small example with its output, then business uses. The notes recommend this four-part order for pivot table and Scenario Manager questions.
Worked example: absolute vs relative reference (Unit 3, page 43)
Question: why does a commission formula break when copied down? Answer in three lines. A relative reference such as B2 shifts when the formula is copied; a constant like a 5% commission rate in F1 must stay fixed, so it is written as $F$1. In C2, =B2*$F$1 copied down becomes =B3*$F$1, =B4*$F$1: the sales cell moves, the rate does not. F4 adds the $ signs (page 43).
Slips the notes flag: RAM as non-volatile, SQL as a 3GL, Subtotal without sorting first. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.
BBA 113 and the GGSIPU BBA Sem 1 papers it connects to
The lab and every other first-semester paper are listed with their credits in the GGSIPU BBA syllabus.
The BBA 115 IT Applications in Business Lab is based on this paper. Its four lab topics map to the theory units:
- Windows commands → Unit 2, Part D
- MS Word, including Mail Merge → Unit 3, Part A
- MS Excel: functions, charts, pivot tables, scenarios → Unit 3, Parts C to F
- MS PowerPoint → Unit 3, Part B
Other first-semester papers, where Unit 3's PMT and SLN support BBA 103 and BBA 105: BBA 101 Management Process & Organizational Behaviour, BBA 103 Business Mathematics, BBA 105 Financial Accounting & Analysis, BBA 107 Business Economics, BBA 109 Entrepreneurial Mindset (NUES) and BBA 111 Life Skills & Personality Development (NUES).
BBA 113 IT Applications notes FAQs
How do I get the full BBA 113 notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" on this page to message the Unnati Educations GGSIPU desk on WhatsApp; the message already names BBA 113. Price and payment details are shared there, and the 72-page PDF reaches you on WhatsApp after successful payment. Open the sample PDF in the header first to check the layout and writing style.
Can I order the BBA 113 notes as a printed book?
No. The BBA 113 notes are sold only as a PDF; a printed book edition is not available. The PDF is laid out like a book, with a clickable contents page that jumps to every section, so it reads well on a phone or laptop. The pages are A4, so you can print the ones you need yourself.
What is the passing mark for BBA 113?
BBA 113 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term, as set by the BBA scheme of examination. That PDF does not print a pass percentage, so we do not state one. End-term minimum marks, the overall pass rule and re-appear rules come from GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in; check it or ask your institute.
Is BBA 113 a NUES paper with no end-term exam?
No. BBA 113 is a Skill Enhancement Course with 3 credits and a 60-mark end-term exam on top of 40 internal marks. The two NUES papers of BBA Semester 1 are BBA 109 Entrepreneurial Mindset and BBA 111 Life Skills & Personality Development. So BBA 113 needs proper written-answer practice for the end-term, not only assignments and class tests.
Which BBA 113 unit needs the most time?
Unit 3, Desktop Components. The syllabus gives it 13 hours, the most of any unit, and the notes give it 17 pages with 53 Excel formulas and their results. The BBA 115 lab is also built on it. Units 2 and 4 get 12 hours each; Unit 1 gets 8 hours, mostly definitions and comparison tables.
Are the BBA 113 notes the same as the BBA 115 lab file?
No. BBA 113 notes are theory notes for the written exam: concepts, comparison tables, Excel functions with results and answered questions. BBA 115 is the separate 1-credit lab, where you practise Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint on a computer. Unit 3 supports the lab well, but these notes are not a lab record to submit.
