Hofstede's dimensions and high-context cultures in business communication: excerpt from page 30 of the BBA 108 notes
Excerpt from page 30
1. Hofstede's cultural dimensions
Dutch researcher Geert Hofstede studied over 1,00,000 IBM employees in more than 50 countries between 1967 and 1973. He first identified four dimensions on which national cultures differ, and two more were added later.
- Power Distance (PDI): how far less powerful members accept an unequal spread of power. In high power-distance countries such as India and Malaysia, communication is top-down and formal titles like "Sir" and "Ma'am" are expected. In low power-distance countries such as Denmark and Austria, people use first names and disagree openly with the boss.
- Individualism vs Collectivism (IDV): whether people see themselves as "I" or "we". Individualist cultures (USA, UK) are direct and stress personal achievement; collectivist cultures (China, Indonesia) protect group harmony and often say "no" indirectly.
- Masculinity vs Femininity (MAS): achievement and competition versus caring and quality of life. Japan leans assertive and results-focused; Sweden and the Netherlands prefer consensus and modesty.
- Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI): how threatened people feel by ambiguity. High scorers (Japan, Greece) want detailed contracts and formal agendas; low scorers (Singapore, Denmark) are comfortable with change.
- Long-term vs Short-term Orientation (LTO): future rewards and patient relationship-building (China, Japan) versus quick deals and quarterly results (USA).
- Indulgence vs Restraint (IVR): open, expressive cultures such as Mexico versus reserved, formal ones such as Russia.
On Hofstede Insights' country comparison, India scores high on Power Distance (77), sits in the middle on Individualism (48) and is fairly low on Uncertainty Avoidance (40). That pattern explains the Indian comfort with hierarchy, strong relationships and a flexible "adjustment" style.
2. Edward T. Hall: high-context and low-context cultures
In Beyond Culture (1976), Hall separated cultures by where meaning lives. In a high-context culture (Japan, China, India, Arab countries, Korea), meaning sits in the relationship, tone and non-verbal cues. Trust comes before business, the spoken word matters, and a direct "no" is avoided in favour of "We will consider it".
In a low-context culture (USA, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia), meaning sits in explicit words. Business comes first, agreements go into detailed written contracts, and "no" is said plainly.

How to write BBA 108 answers: drafted letters, notices and minutes plus fifteen-mark theory answers
This paper mixes theory answers with drafting answers, and marks are usually lost by skipping part of a format.
- Drafted letters: write every layout part in order: letterhead, reference number, date, inside address, subject, salutation, a three-paragraph body, complimentary close, signature with designation. Match the close to the salutation, write 8 October 2026 rather than 8/10/26, and use names like ABC Ltd., never your own name or roll number.
- Internal documents: a memo takes To, From, Date and Subject with no salutation or close. Minutes use the past tense and third person and follow the agenda numbering.
- Fifteen-mark theory answers: meaning with two author definitions (Keith Davis and Louis Allen for communication), a diagram where one exists, a business example for each point and a one-line conclusion. A 7Cs answer needs a wrong-versus-right sentence for every C.
Worked example: Completeness (page 14)
"Please attend the meeting tomorrow." fails the 5W + 1H check: no date, time, place or preparation. Complete version: "Please attend the budget meeting on Friday, 9 October, at 11:00 a.m. in Conference Room 2. Bring your department's Q3 expense sheet."

Message us on WhatsApp at 9899436384 using the "Get Full Notes" button at the top of this page. The full BBA 108 notes are sold only as a printed book of 78 pages; they are not available as a PDF. We confirm the order there and share availability, delivery time and delivery details for your address.
Is BBA 108 a NUES paper, or does it have an end-term exam?
BBA 108 is not a NUES paper. The official scheme lists it as an Ability Enhancement Course with L-2, T-0 and 2 credits, assessed like other theory papers: 40 internal marks from a class test and at least two activities, plus a 60-mark end-term exam. NUES papers in the BBA scheme carry NUES in their titles, such as BBA 109.
What is the passing mark for BBA 108?
BBA 108 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The BBA scheme of examination on ipu.ac.in does not print a pass percentage, so we do not state one here. Minimum marks, end-term requirements and re-appear rules are set by GGSIPU Ordinance 11; check it, or your institute's examination cell, for the current rule.
Which BBA 108 unit has the most letter and draft formats?
Unit 3 has the most: ten full specimens covering layout, persuasive, request, sales, complaint, adjustment, job application, interview call, promotion and resignation letters. Unit 4 adds seven internal drafts: newsletter, circular, notice with agenda, minutes, office memo, office order and a short memo-form report. Units 1 and 2 are theory-led, with a case study each.
Are presentation tools in Unit 3 or Unit 4 of BBA 108?
Both, in name. The official Unit III title of BBA 108 reads "Business letter writing and Presentation Tools", but the topic list puts "How to Make a Presentation, Presentation Tools, Guidelines for Effective Presentation" under Unit IV. The notes follow the topic list and teach presentations in Unit 4, pages 73 to 75, with an eight-step method, nine visual aids and two slide rules.
Which BBA 108 topics are taught through case studies?
Each BBA 108 unit has one case with suggested answer points. Unit 1 uses a late-night WhatsApp order at an online grocery firm to test the process, the 7Cs and listening. Unit 2 follows an Indian software team's first call with a Japanese client. Unit 3 dissects a careless reply to a valid warranty complaint, and Unit 4 pairs a 42-slide board presentation with a decision lost for want of minutes.
