Desirability, feasibility and viability of a startup business model: excerpt from page 32 of the BBA 215 notes

Excerpt from page 32

Analysing a business model: what to check

Once a founder has sketched a business model, the next job is to test it before money is spent. The notes break this test into eight areas, each with one plain question.

  • Desirability: do customers really want it, and is the problem important enough to pay for?
  • Feasibility: can the team actually build and deliver it with the technology, skills and resources it has?
  • Viability: will it earn a profit, with revenue staying above costs in the long run?
  • Unit economics: compare Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) with Customer Lifetime Value (LTV). LTV should be well above CAC, and each order should leave a contribution margin.
  • Scalability: can revenue grow faster than costs as the business grows?
  • Competitive advantage: is the model hard to copy, through network effects, brand, technology or cost?
  • SWOT analysis: list the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the model.
  • Sustainability: is it environmentally and socially responsible, and legally compliant?

Key point: the three-way meeting point

A strong business model sits where desirability (the customer), feasibility (technology and operations) and viability (money) meet. If any one of the three is missing, the venture will struggle, however good the idea sounds.

The Business Model Canvas

The Business Model Canvas was developed by Alexander Osterwalder with Yves Pigneur in the book Business Model Generation (2010). It is a one-page visual tool with nine building blocks that show how an organisation creates, delivers and captures value. Startups like it because it is quick to fill, simple to read and easy to change when an assumption proves wrong.

The nine blocks are customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners and cost structure. On the canvas, the left side stands for efficiency (infrastructure and cost) and the right side for value (customers and revenue). The value proposition sits in the centre and connects the two sides.

How to write BBA 215 answers: definition-led theory answers with diagrams and Indian startup cases

BBA 215 has no numericals, so marks come from structure: a one-line definition, a labelled diagram, points with names and years, then one Indian example.

  • Open with a distinction. Page 4: Entrepreneur = person, Entrepreneurship = process, Enterprise = outcome.
  • Draw first. Fig 1.5 for Danhof's types, Fig 2.7 for the Triple Bottom Line, Fig 4.2 for India's support system.
  • Use names and years. Cantillon, Schumpeter (1934), Drucker (1985); NSIC 1955, KVIC 1957, SIDBI 1990, MUDRA 2015 (page 42).
  • Keep the business plan in order. All 12 sections, one or two lines each; the executive summary is written last but placed first.
  • Avoid the named traps. Over-optimistic sales figures weaken a plan; "we have no competition" weakens a pitch.

Worked example: a ten-mark outline on institutions supporting small business (page 47 exam tip)

  1. Draw Fig 4.2 at the top.
  2. Central: Ministry of MSME, DC-MSME, SIDBI, NSIC, KVIC, NI-MSME, NIESBUD.
  3. State: DICs, SFCs, SIDCs, SSIDCs.
  4. Other agencies: banks, MUDRA, NABARD, EDII, incubators.
  5. Industry associations: CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, TiE.

How do I get the full BBA 215 notes?

The full BBA 215 notes come only as a printed book; they are not sold as a PDF. Tap "Get Full Notes" or the button at the end of this page to message our GGSIPU desk on WhatsApp at 9899436384. The team confirms your order on that chat. Delivery takes 5 to 7 days at most, depending on your location, and the 49-page book covers all four units.

Is BBA 215 a compulsory paper in GGSIPU BBA Semester 3?

No. BBA 215 is an elective of the Entrepreneurship Development specialisation in Semester 3. You pick two Semester 3 electives from different specialisations, one as Major Elective-1 and one as Minor Elective-1, and BBA 215 can fill either slot. The official scheme adds that an elective or specialisation is offered only when at least 10% of students opt for it.

What is the passing mark for BBA 215?

BBA 215 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 splits into a class test of 15 marks and 25 marks for at least two activities such as assignments, presentations or viva-voce. The BBA scheme PDF does not state a pass percentage, so we do not quote one. End-term minimums and re-appear rules are in GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.

Which BBA 215 unit has the most case studies?

Unit 2 has the most, with seven case studies: the Embrace infant warmer, Dhirubhai Ambani, N.R. Narayana Murthy, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Nithin Kamath, Lijjat Papad and Phool. They show traits, design thinking, women entrepreneurship and green entrepreneurship in real ventures. Unit 1 and Unit 3 have three cases each, and Unit 4 uses five worked scheme-matching examples instead of case studies.

Do the BBA 215 notes cover the Unit 4 class exercise on government schemes?

Yes. Pages 46 and 47 give a six-step method to match a scheme to a business plan, five worked examples (from a mobile repair shop to a student AI app) and a seven-point format for your own exercise. The scheme table on page 45 uses figures as notified up to 2025-26, and the notes ask you to recheck them on the official portals before quoting.

Does BBA 215 have a lab or practical paper?

No. BBA 215 is a pure theory paper with 4 lecture hours a week and no tutorial or practical hours (L-4, T/P-0), worth 4 credits. There is no paired lab code. Practical work comes through the internal 25 marks for assignments or presentations and through the Unit 4 class exercise, where you choose a government scheme for the business plan you devise.
