Validity and reliability of assessment centres in talent management: excerpt from page 26 of the BBA 208 notes

Excerpt from page 26

Resources required for an assessment centre

An assessment centre needs six kinds of resources. Human resources: trained assessors, a centre manager or administrator, role-players and support staff. Exercise material: case papers, in-basket packs, instructions, rating forms and tests. Physical facilities: rooms for group work and one-to-one exercises, and a waiting area.

Technology: computers, test software, a video platform and recording devices. Time: usually 1 to 3 days for the centre, plus time for design and the wash-up. Finance: a budget for consultants, assessor time, venue, travel and material.

The usual ratio is one assessor for every two candidates (1:2), and each candidate should be seen by different assessors in different exercises. This is why assessment centres need more people and money than a normal interview.

Reliability

Reliability means consistency of results. An assessment centre is reliable if it gives similar results when the same candidate is assessed again, or when different assessors rate the same candidate.

  • Inter-rater reliability: different assessors give similar ratings to the same behaviour.
  • Test-retest reliability: similar results if the centre is repeated after some time.
  • Internal consistency: different exercises measuring the same competency give similar ratings.

Validity

Validity means the centre measures what it claims to measure, and its results are actually useful for predicting job performance.

Types of validity of an assessment centre (excerpt, page 26)
Type of validityMeaning
Content validityExercises truly represent the important tasks and competencies of the job
Criterion / predictive validityScores correctly predict future job performance, promotion or success
Construct validityThe centre really measures the competencies it is designed to measure
Face validityCandidates and managers feel the exercises look fair and job-related

How to improve validity and reliability

  • Base the centre on a proper job analysis and a clear competency framework.
  • Use multiple exercises and measure each competency at least twice.
  • Use well-trained assessors and clear behaviourally anchored rating scales (BARS).
  • Keep standard conditions: the same time, instructions and scoring for all.

How to write BBA 208 answers: definition-led long answers with diagrams, tables and case analysis

The notes' four exam tips share a pattern: definition first, then a diagram or table, then points with Indian examples.

  • Unit 1, four components: four headings, 4 to 5 lines each, plus the Fig 1.2 diagram.
  • Unit 2, assessment centres: meaning, features, exercises table, Fig 2.1, benefits, limits; add the exercise-competency matrix.
  • Unit 3, career models: at least three, ideally Super, Schein and Holland, each with a table.
  • Unit 4, ethics: link to exclusive vs inclusive talent and end with the balanced view.

Worked example: 2–3 marks (Unit 1, Q4)

Distinguish between upskilling and reskilling. Upskilling improves existing skills for the same job, like a sales executive learning CRM. Reskilling teaches new skills for a different role, like a data-entry clerk becoming a data analyst.

For case questions, name the concept, quote one fact from the case and suggest one action. Practise on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

BBA 208 and the GGSIPU BBA Sem 4 papers it connects to

BBA 208 has no lab paper; its credits and elective rules are listed in the GGSIPU BBA syllabus.

Semester 4 has BBA 202 Cost and Management Accounting and BBA 204 Business Analytics (core), and BBA 206 MOOC or BBA 218 Sustainability Practices (value-added).

The second elective comes from another specialisation: BBA 210 Sales and Channel Management, BBA 212 Income Tax Law and Practice, BBA 214 International Business Environment and Strategy or BBA 216 Opportunity and Feasibility Analysis.

  • Unit 4 HR analytics → BBA 204 Business Analytics.
  • Unit 2 role of training → BBA 207 Training and Development (Semester 3).
  • Units 1 and 4 build on recruitment and pay in BBA 106 Human Resource Management (Semester 2).

BBA 208 Talent Management notes FAQs

How do I get the full BBA 208 notes?

Message the Unnati Educations GGSIPU desk on WhatsApp at 9899436384 using the "Get Full Notes" button. The BBA 208 Talent Management notes are sold only as a 61-page printed book; they are not available as a PDF. Delivery takes 5 to 7 days at most, depending on your location. The team confirms the edition and order details on WhatsApp.

Is BBA 208 a major or a minor elective?

It can be either. BBA 208 is the Human Resource Management elective in Semester 4, and each student picks two electives from two different specialisations, one as Major Elective-2 and one as Minor Elective-2. Which slot it fills depends on your chosen specialisations. The scheme adds that an elective runs only if at least 10% of students opt for it.

How is BBA 208 marked, and what is the passing mark?

BBA 208 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 is a compulsory class test of 15 marks plus 25 marks for at least two activities such as assignments, viva or group discussion. The scheme PDF prints no pass percentage, so check end-term minimums and re-appear rules in Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.

Which BBA 208 unit needs the most study time?

Unit 2 has the most sections (15) because it joins assessment centres and competencies. Unit 1 is the longest at 17 pages and ties with Unit 2 for the most exam questions, 17 each. Unit 3 is the shortest at 12 pages, but its four diagrams, including the 9-box grid, suit BBA 208 long answers.

Do the BBA 208 notes include case studies?

Yes, four in total, one per unit, each with four discussion questions: TechNova Solutions on upskilling, a bank's promotion assessment centre, Sharma Foods' succession gap and FinEdge's analytics-based retention plan. The official BBA 208 syllabus asks for case studies on current issues, so these four give practice for case questions in class discussion and internal assessment.

Should I study BBA 106 before BBA 208?

The scheme lists no prerequisite for BBA 208, but it builds on BBA 106 Human Resource Management from Semester 2. Recruitment, selection, training and pay from BBA 106 return in BBA 208 at a strategic level as talent acquisition, assessment centres and customised rewards. A quick BBA 106 revision makes Units 1 and 4 easier.
