Channel conflict in sales and distribution: excerpt from page 50 of the BBA 210 notes
Excerpt from page 50
Managing channel dynamics and relationships
Channels are not static. Channel dynamics means the continuous change in channel structure and relationships caused by new formats (modern trade, e-commerce, quick commerce), changing customer behaviour, technology and competition. Handling these changes needs strong channel relationships built on trust, commitment, communication and a fair sharing of profits.
What channel conflict means
Channel conflict arises when the actions of one channel member stop another member, or the channel as a whole, from reaching its goals. A little conflict is healthy because it pushes members to improve, but too much of it damages the brand.
| Type | Between whom | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical conflict | Different levels of the same channel | Manufacturer and distributor over margins; distributor and retailer over credit |
| Horizontal conflict | Members at the same level | Two dealers of one brand undercutting prices or selling in each other's territory |
| Multichannel conflict | Different channels selling to the same market | Offline retailers against e-commerce discounts; distributors protesting against B2B apps and quick commerce |
Types of channel conflict with Indian examples (excerpt, page 50)
- Type
- Vertical conflict
- Between whom
- Different levels of the same channel
- Example
- Manufacturer and distributor over margins; distributor and retailer over credit
- Type
- Horizontal conflict
- Between whom
- Members at the same level
- Example
- Two dealers of one brand undercutting prices or selling in each other's territory
- Type
- Multichannel conflict
- Between whom
- Different channels selling to the same market
- Example
- Offline retailers against e-commerce discounts; distributors protesting against B2B apps and quick commerce
Causes of channel conflict
- Goal incompatibility: the manufacturer wants market share while the dealer wants a high margin.
- Unclear roles and rights, such as overlapping territories or vague credit and return policies.
- Different perceptions of market conditions and future demand.
- Dependence, as exclusive dealers rely on the manufacturer's decisions.
- Margin and pricing disputes, sharpened by online discounts.
- Direct selling by the company to big customers, bypassing distributors.
- Poor communication and slow settlement of claims.
First steps to resolve it
The page then lists the softer resolution methods. Superordinate goals get members to agree on a common aim, such as survival or market share against a rival. Exchange of persons lets executives work at another level for a while to understand each other.
Co-optation brings channel leaders into advisory councils and boards, joint membership in trade associations gives a common forum, and diplomacy puts representatives of each side at one table. Mediation, arbitration and legal recourse continue on the next page.
How to write BBA 210 answers: selling-theory flowcharts, comparison tables and formula-backed retail answers
BBA 210 is a descriptive paper, so marks come from structure rather than length. The notes build each answer from a definition with its author (AMA, Kotler, Rosenbloom), a diagram or chain, a comparison table and one Indian example.
The notes add specific tips. For selling theories, draw the AIDAS chain and add the theory-orientation table. For evaluating salespeople, put input, output and qualitative bases in one table with ratios such as expense ratio (selling expenses ÷ sales × 100).
For retail performance, write at least six measures with formulas. For ethics, list the issues first, then a law table led by the Consumer Protection Act 2019, Competition Act 2002 and Legal Metrology Act 2009.
Worked example: "Explain the theories of personal selling. Which theory is buyer-oriented?"
- Open with one line: selling theories explain how a buyer moves towards a purchase and what the salesperson does at each stage (Still, Cundiff and Govoni).
- AIDAS: draw Attention → Interest → Desire → Action → Satisfaction, then one merit and one limitation.
- Right set of circumstances: the situation produces the response; seller-oriented.
- Buying formula: need + adequate solution + pleasant feeling = purchase. State clearly that this is the buyer-oriented theory, which answers the second part of the question.
- Behavioural equation: Howard's
B = P × D × K × V, noting that a zero in any element means no purchase. - Close with the comparison table (theory, orientation, key idea) and an EdTech or FMCG example.
The same frame works in every unit: swap the chain for the nine-step selection process in Unit 2, the 13 intermediary functions in Unit 3 or the five-step channel design in Unit 4. Practise this layout on full-length questions from GGSIPU BBA important questions.

- Unit 3: Discuss the types and role of channel intermediaries in India for consumer and industrial products. Merchant versus agent middlemen, then the consumer versus industrial channel table.
- Unit 4: Explain the objectives and decision areas of physical distribution. 6 Rights and total cost concept, then the six decision areas.
The other 34 questions and their hints stay in the full notes. More practice for this paper sits in the BBA 210 important questions.

How do I get the full BBA 210 notes?
The full BBA 210 Sales and Channel Management notes are sold as a printed book only; they are not available as a PDF. Tap "Get Full Notes" or the WhatsApp button at the end of this page, and our desk replies with the book details and how to order. Delivery takes 5 to 7 days at most, depending on your location. The View Sample PDF at the top shows seven pages first.
Is BBA 210 a major or a minor paper in GGSIPU BBA?
BBA 210 can be either. It is the Semester 4 Marketing elective, so it counts as Major Elective-2 (Discipline Specific Course) if Marketing is your major, or Minor Elective-2 (Inter-disciplinary Course) if it is your minor. Both carry 4 credits with 4 lecture hours a week. The scheme runs an elective only when at least 10% of students opt for it.
What are the passing marks for BBA 210?
BBA 210 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The BBA scheme of examination PDF does not print a pass percentage, so we do not quote one here. End-term minimums, aggregate rules and re-appear rules come from GGSIPU Ordinance 11, published on ipu.ac.in; check that ordinance or ask your institute before relying on any pass figure you see online.
How are the 40 internal marks of BBA 210 split?
For BBA 210, the scheme gives 15 marks to a compulsory written class test held as per the academic calendar, and 25 marks to individual assignments, presentations, viva-voce, group discussion or class participation, with at least two of these activities counted. Faculty keep records of these marks. The notes' answer hints and Indian examples help with presentations and group discussions as well as the class test.
Which BBA 210 unit is the longest in the notes?
Unit 1, Introduction to Sales Management, is the longest part of the BBA 210 notes at 16 pages with 12 sections and 10 exam questions, because it carries four selling theories and ten forecasting methods. Unit 2 runs 14 pages, Unit 4 runs 13 and Unit 3 runs 12, though Unit 3 has the most sections at 13.
Do the BBA 210 notes include case studies?
Not full case studies. The BBA 210 syllabus asks teachers to use case studies and simulations, but the notes give 8 short real-life examples instead, such as HUL's Shikhar app, DMart's EDLP strategy and LIC's MDRT rewards for agents. These are enough to quote in an answer; for a full case discussion in class, use the material your teacher provides.
