Seven sins of greenwashing in sustainable marketing: excerpt from page 31 of the BBA 218 notes
Excerpt from page 31
3.3 Greenwashing
Greenwashing means making false, vague or exaggerated environmental claims so that a company looks more sustainable than it really is. It misleads consumers and also damages trust in products that are genuinely green, which hurts honest firms that have paid for real change.
The consultancy TerraChoice grouped the common forms of greenwashing into seven "sins". Students can use this list directly in a marketing answer: name the sin, explain it in one line and give an example.
| Sin | What it means |
|---|---|
| Hidden trade-off | Highlighting one green feature while hiding bigger harms |
| No proof | A claim that no evidence or certification can verify |
| Vagueness | Broad words such as "eco-friendly", "natural" or "green" |
| Irrelevance | A true but useless claim, such as "CFC-free" when CFCs are already banned |
| Lesser of two evils | A green claim on a product that is harmful by nature, such as "organic cigarettes" |
| Fibbing | Plainly false claims |
| Worshipping false labels | A fake seal or label made to look like a certification |

The Indian rule on green claims
In 2024, India's Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Greenwashing or Misleading Environmental Claims. A company must now support every environmental claim with verifiable evidence and must not use vague terms without qualifying them.
Why it matters for a manager
Greenwashing turns a marketing shortcut into a legal and reputational risk. A label such as "100% eco-friendly" with no test report behind it can commit two sins at once: vagueness and no proof.
The safer route is the one the green marketing mix recommends: honest, verifiable promotion backed by recognised eco-labels such as Ecomark, FSC or the BEE star label. That way the claim supports responsible consumption under SDG 12 instead of undermining it, and the brand earns trust that lasts beyond one campaign.

How to write BBA 218 answers: SDG-numbered long answers built around a case and a diagram
The BBA 218 notes build long answers on three habits. First, tag every practice with its SDG number: green bonds with SDG 7 and 13, circular economy with SDG 12, Green HRM with SDG 8 and 12. Second, quote at least one case in every long answer, since the syllabus itself asks for case studies. Third, draw the diagram the plan names, such as the 5 Ps tree, the SDG Compass flow or the Environmental Kuznets Curve, and label it with the unit's own terms.
For an "importance" question, write 7 to 8 one-line points with an Indian example such as the SDG India Index or Mission LiFE. For cross-cultural questions, combine the Hofstede table, the North-South and CBDR point, and an Indian tradition such as the Bishnoi community or the Chipko Movement.
Worked example: "Critically examine the role of MNCs in global sustainability" (12.5 Marks)
- Introduction: define an MNC and its weight in trade, investment and technology.
- Two-faces table: technology transfer and global standards against pollution havens and tax avoidance.
- Seven ways MNCs can help, from one global standard to Scope 1, 2 and 3 targets.
- Case: the Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984) and parent-company responsibility.
- Conclusion: partnership under SDG 17, with governments, NGOs and UN agencies.
Avoid the slips the notes list: CSR is 2% of average net profit of the preceding three years, not of turnover; ISO 26000 is guidance, not a certificate; the Kuznets Curve is a hypothesis, not a law; and absolute liability (M.C. Mehta, 1987) has no exceptions, unlike strict liability.
