BBA 301 Financial Management Notes unit-wise: 47 solved illustrations and 31 practice numericals across 4 units
These BBA 301 Financial Management IPU notes follow the official unit order, and each unit ends with exam questions, a common-mistakes table and a quick revision table. Notes for the other BBA papers are available through the GGSIPU BBA course pages.
BBA 301 Unit 1: Introduction
Also covered as "Introduction to Financial Management", pages 6 to 23. It covers profit, wealth and value maximisation, the agency problem, EVA, MVA and the finance manager's functions, then time value of money up to perpetuity and the Rule of 72. Count: 13 illustrations, 12 exam questions, 8 practice numericals.
Quick look: EVA in three steps (from page 11)
- NOPAT = EBIT × (1 − tax) = ₹50 lakh × 0.75 = ₹37.5 lakh.
- Capital charge = ₹200 lakh capital employed × 12% WACC = ₹24 lakh.
- EVA = 37.5 − 24 = ₹13.5 lakh, positive, so value is created.
BBA 301 Unit 2: Cost of Capital and Finance Decision
Unit 2 (pages 24 to 39) covers long-term sources of finance, Kd, Kp, Ke (including CAPM) and Kr, then marginal cost of capital with break-points. The second half covers the NI, NOI, traditional and MM theories, with arbitrage and MM with taxes. Count: 14 illustrations, 12 exam questions, 8 practice numericals.
Quick look: traditional approach at three debt levels (from page 33)
| Structure | Debt | Value (V) | Ko |

WACC with book and market value weights in financial management: excerpt from page 30 of the BBA 301 notes
Excerpt from page 30
What WACC measures
The weighted average cost of capital (Ko) is the overall cost of all the funds a firm uses. Each specific cost (debt, preference, equity, retained earnings) is multiplied by that source's share of total capital and the results are added: Ko = WdKd + WpKp + WeKe + WrKr. The weights must add up to 1. It is the discount rate used later in capital budgeting and in EVA.
Book value weights: a worked case
A firm's capital of ₹10,00,000 is made up of equity share capital ₹5,00,000 at 15%, retained earnings ₹2,00,000 at 14%, 10% preference shares ₹1,00,000 at 11%, and debentures ₹2,00,000 at 7% after tax.
| Source | Amount (₹) | Weight | Cost (%) | Weighted cost (%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equity share capital | 5,00,000 | 0.50 | 15 | 7.50 |
| Retained earnings | 2,00,000 | 0.20 | 14 | 2.80 |

Market value weights: same firm, different answer
At market values, equity (which now already includes retained earnings) is worth ₹12,00,000 at 15%, preference ₹1,00,000 at 11% and debentures ₹2,00,000 at 7%, a total of ₹15,00,000. WACC = (1,80,000 + 11,000 + 14,000) ÷ 15,00,000 = 2,05,000 ÷ 15,00,000 = 13.67%. The market-value figure is higher because equity, the costliest source, carries a bigger weight.

| Source of data | Balance sheet | Stock market prices |
| Ease | Simple, readily available | Difficult; prices fluctuate |
| Theoretical soundness | Less: reflects historical cost | More: reflects current opportunity cost |
| Retained earnings | Shown separately | Merged in market value of equity |
| Stability | Stable | Volatile |

How to write BBA 301 answers: formula-first numericals, decision rules and ten-mark theory answers
BBA 301 mixes numericals (time value, cost of capital, capital budgeting, working capital) with theory on objectives, capital structure and dividend models. The notes' exam tips say examiners give step marks, so the method matters as much as the final figure.
Numericals: formula, factor, answer. Write the formula first, then the factor used (for example PVIFA at 10% for 5 years = 3.7908), then the answer with the ₹ sign. Set NI and NOI answers out as a table, one column per debt level. Close every capital budgeting sum with the decision rule: accept if NPV > 0, IRR > k or PI > 1.
Worked example: cost of redeemable debt (page 27)
12% debentures of ₹1,000, net proceeds ₹960, redeemable at par after 5 years, tax 30%.
- Formula: Kd = [I(1 − t) + (RV − NP) ÷ n] ÷ [(RV + NP) ÷ 2]
- I(1 − t) = 120 × 0.70 = ₹84; (1,000 − 960) ÷ 5 = ₹8; average = (1,000 + 960) ÷ 2 = ₹980
- Kd = (84 + 8) ÷ 980 = 9.39%
Ten-mark theory answers. The answer points in the notes follow one shape: meaning or formula, assumptions or classification, a small numerical or comparison table, then criticism. In capital structure answers, state how Kd, Ke and Ko behave under each approach.
Mistakes the notes flag: applying (1 − t) to preference or equity cost; using D0 instead of D1 in Gordon's formula; deducting interest from project cash flows; interpolating IRR between two positive NPVs; discounting certainty-equivalent flows at the RADR; taking the payout ratio as b.
Practise this format with the BBA 301 numerical types and other GGSIPU BBA important questions when available.

One exam-style question per unit, with answer pointers:
- Unit I [15]: "Wealth maximization is a better objective than profit maximization." Discuss. Pointer: Both objectives, a comparison table and a two-project case where discounting flips the choice.
- Unit II [15]: Explain the MM hypothesis and the arbitrage process. Pointer: Propositions I to III, home-made leverage, V(L) = V(U) + tD.
- Unit III [10]: Why may NPV and IRR conflict? Pointer: Size, timing and life disparity; NPV preferred.
- Unit IV [2]: What is the cash conversion cycle? Pointer: Operating cycle minus the creditors' payment period.
No question carries a year tag. More practice is planned for the BBA 301 important-questions page.

Do the BBA 301 notes follow the 2024-25 BBA scheme?
Yes, fully. They follow the NEP-based BBA scheme in force from academic session 2024-25, in which BBA 301 Financial Management is the Semester 5 Discipline Specific Course with L-4, T-0 and 4 credits. All four official units appear in the same order and with the same topics as the scheme PDF on ipu.ac.in, page 99.
How is BBA 301 marked, and what is the passing mark?
BBA 301 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 is a class test of 15 plus 25 for at least two activities such as assignments, presentation, viva-voce or group discussion. The BBA scheme PDF does not print a pass percentage, so we do not state one. End-term minimums and re-appear rules are in Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Which BBA 301 unit has the most numericals?
Unit 2, Cost of Capital and Finance Decision, has the most: 14 solved illustrations and 8 practice numericals on specific costs, WACC, marginal cost of capital and capital structure cases. Unit 1 follows closely with 13 illustrations on EVA, MVA and time value. Unit 4 has the fewest, with 9 illustrations and 7 practice numericals.
Do the BBA 301 notes include present value tables?
Yes, two. Page 21 lists PVIF and PVIFA at 8%, 10% and 12% for years 1 to 5, used in the Unit 1 time value sums. Page 53 lists PVIF and PVIFA at 12%, 14%, 16% and 18% for years 1 to 6, built for IRR trial-and-error in Unit 3. In the exam, use any tables your paper supplies.
Is BBA 301 a theory paper or does it have a practical?
BBA 301 is a theory paper only: L-4, T-0, 4 credits, with no paired lab and no practical marks in the scheme. The Semester 5 practical is BBA 325 Information Systems Management Lab, a separate 2-credit Skill Enhancement Course. Its Excel break-even work overlaps with BBA 301 Unit 3, but the two are examined separately.
