Bill of lading functions and types in export documentation: excerpt from page 28 of the BBA 315 notes
Excerpt from page 28
Three functions of a bill of lading
First, it is a receipt of goods: the carrier admits it has received the goods in the stated quantity and condition. Second, it is evidence of the contract of carriage, because the terms of transport are printed on it. Third, it is a document of title. Whoever legally holds the original, properly endorsed, can claim the goods. Since it passes by endorsement and delivery, goods can be sold while still at sea, which is why banks prefer it under a letter of credit.
Types of bill of lading
| Type | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Shipped (on-board) | Issued after goods are loaded on the ship; preferred by banks |
| Received for shipment | Issued when goods reach the port but are not yet loaded |
| Clean | No remark about defective goods or packing; required under an LC |
| Claused (foul or dirty) | Carries a remark such as "cartons torn"; banks usually reject it |
| Straight / Order | Straight is consigned to a named person and not negotiable; order is made "to order" and negotiable by endorsement |
| Stale | Presented to the bank after 21 days from shipment under UCP 600, unless the LC says otherwise |
| House / Master | House is issued by a freight forwarder (NVOCC) to the shipper; master is issued by the shipping line to the forwarder |

Mate's receipt
The chief officer (mate) of the ship issues a mate's receipt when goods are loaded. The shipper exchanges it with the shipping company for the bill of lading. It is an auxiliary document, not a document of title.
Airway bill and how it differs
For air cargo, the airline or an IATA agent issues an airway bill. It is a receipt and evidence of the contract of carriage, but it is not a document of title and cannot be negotiated: the goods go to the consignee named on it. Air cargo often arrives before the documents, while sea documents may reach the buyer before the ship does. Electronic airway bills (e-AWB) are now widely used.
How to write BBA 315 answers: document-wise long answers, comparison tables and HOTS case solutions
BBA 315 rewards students who name the right authority and the right form. The exam tips in the notes return to four habits.
Get the issuing body right. Page 17 warns that students mix up authorities: IEC comes from DGFT, RCMC from an Export Promotion Council or Commodity Board, and the AD code from the bank. Page 47 adds that marine products sit with MPEDA, not APEDA.
Answer old terms, then update them. The syllabus still names GR, SDF and PP forms, so page 29 advises writing their meaning and use first, then one line that GR and PP were replaced by the EDF from 1 October 2013 while SDF continues at EDI ports. General excise clearance works the same way: today it means GST clearance under LUT.
Use a table for every "distinguish" question. EPZ vs SEZ, pre- vs post-shipment finance, D/P vs D/A and FOB vs CIF are all laid out as tables in the notes. For trade figures, page 9 asks for the pattern, not exact decimals.
Show the working in HOTS cases. Page 53 asks which FTP 2023 status a Hyderabad pharma firm exporting US$ 18 million a year for four years can claim.
Add the current year and the previous three: 4 x 18 = US$ 72 million. That clears the Three Star threshold (US$ 50 million) but not Four Star (US$ 200 million). Then add what the hint expects: MSME double weightage could lift it higher, and EPCG allows zero-duty machinery against an export obligation of 6 times the duty saved within 6 years.
For the costing numerical, page 63 sets the order: deduct incentives before profit, then FOB + freight = CFR and CFR + insurance = CIF. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

Are the BBA 315 notes available as a PDF download?
No. The complete BBA 315 notes are sold only as a printed book, delivered to your address in a maximum of 5-7 days depending on location.
Is BBA 315 compulsory for every GGSIPU BBA Semester 5 student?
No. BBA 315 is an International Business elective. Major-minor students take two papers of their major and one of their minor; double-major students take two from each. International Business students usually pair it with BBA 317. The scheme says electives run at the college's or university's discretion, so check with your college which Semester 5 electives it offers this year.
How is BBA 315 marked, and what is the passing mark?
BBA 315 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. Internal marks are 15 for a compulsory class test and 25 for at least two activities. The official BBA scheme PDF does not print a pass percentage, so we do not quote one here. End-term minimums and re-appear rules are in GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Do the BBA 315 notes cover INCOTERMS 2020 and FTP 2023?
Yes. Unit IV (pages 63-65) explains all 11 INCOTERMS 2020 and the changes from 2010, such as DAT becoming DPU and CIP moving to ICC (A) cover. Unit III (pages 49-51) covers FTP 2023: its four pillars, RoDTEP, drawback, Advance Authorisation, EPCG, Towns of Export Excellence and the Export Promotion Mission, with a summary table on page 51.
Which BBA 315 unit needs the most study time?
Unit II, Export and Import Procedures. It has 16 teaching hours in the official scheme, the most of the four units, and in the notes it runs 18 pages with 13 sections, 3 case studies and 11 long-answer questions. Unit I is also 18 pages long, but it leans on trade theories and trade data rather than export documents.
