Relative market share and the four BCG cells in portfolio analysis: excerpt from page 65 of the BBA 302 notes
Excerpt from page 65
The BCG growth-share matrix, developed by the Boston Consulting Group under Bruce Henderson around 1970, places every strategic business unit on a 2 × 2 grid. Its logic rests on the product life cycle and the experience curve: a business with a bigger share usually has lower costs and throws off more cash.
The two axes
The vertical axis is the market growth rate, the yearly growth of the market in which the unit operates. It signals how attractive the market is and how much cash the unit will need. The usual dividing line is about 10%: above it counts as high growth, below it as low growth.
The horizontal axis is relative market share: the unit's own share divided by the share of its largest competitor. It signals how much cash the unit can generate. The dividing line is 1.0x, and anything above 1 means the unit is the market leader.
Working out relative market share
If your share is 30% and the biggest rival holds 20%, relative market share is 30 ÷ 20 = 1.5x, so you lead the market. If your share is 10% and the leader holds 40%, relative market share is 10 ÷ 40 = 0.25x. A common slip is to plot your plain market share; the matrix always compares you with the largest rival.
The four categories
Stars sit in high-growth markets with a high share. They earn a lot of cash but also need a lot to keep growing, so they are roughly self-sufficient. The advice is hold or build, because a star becomes a cash cow once growth slows.
Cash cows lead mature, low-growth markets. They generate surplus cash and need little investment, so the firm holds or harvests them and uses the cash to fund stars and question marks.
Question marks, also called problem children or wild cats, have a low share in a high-growth market. They need heavy cash and generate little, so the firm either builds the promising ones into stars or divests the rest.
Dogs, or pets, have a low share in a low-growth market. Profits are thin and they may even drain cash, so the usual choice is harvest, divest or liquidate, unless a dog has some special value to the firm.

How to write BBA 302 answers: definitions, labelled diagrams and Indian company examples
With no numericals in BBA 302, marks come from structure. The notes build answers from four blocks:
- A named definition: Glueck or Kazmi for business policy, Chandler or Mintzberg's 5 Ps for strategy.
- The numbered figure the outline asks for, such as Figure 1.3 (strategic management process) or Figure 2.6 (7S).
- A table for any comparison: the page 13 exam tip suggests one for forecasting techniques.
- An Indian example per point: Amul for SWOT, Jio for the Five Forces, Titan for concentric diversification.
Worked example (page 72 exam tip): answer PIMS in four parts. (1) Origin: GE, Harvard, then the Strategic Planning Institute from 1975. (2) The database and par ROI. (3) Findings: higher share and quality raise ROI; high investment intensity lowers it. (4) Uses and limitations, with Figure 4.5.
The common-mistakes boxes flag slips such as 7S drawn without Shared Values at the centre, or the BCG vertical axis labelled market share instead of market growth rate. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

How do I get the full BBA 302 notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" at the top or the WhatsApp button below; our GGSIPU desk replies on 9899436384. The full BBA 302 Business Policy and Strategy notes come only as a printed book of 81 pages, not as a PDF. After your order is confirmed it usually reaches you within 5 to 7 days, depending on your location.
What is the passing mark for BBA 302 Business Policy and Strategy?
BBA 302 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term, as the BBA scheme of examination states. The revised BBA scheme PDF on ipu.ac.in does not print a pass percentage for the paper, so we do not quote one here. For minimum marks and re-appear rules, check GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in and your college's notices.
Which BBA 302 unit is the longest, in the syllabus and in the notes?
Unit II, Environmental Analysis and Analysis of Internal Resources. The official syllabus gives it 16 teaching hours against 14 or 15 for the other units, and the notes give it 20 pages, from page 26 to page 45. It packs in the most tools: PESTLE, Five Forces, ETOP, VRIO, value chain, SAP, SWOT with TOWS and McKinsey's 7S.
Are the BBA 302 long answers fully written out in the notes?
The 28 short answers are written in full. The 22 long-answer questions of ten and fifteen marks come as answer outlines: the order of points, the figure to draw and the case to quote, for example "definitions, then process, then Figure 1.3, then conclusion". The content for each point sits in that unit's sections, so you expand the outline from pages already read.
How is the BCG matrix different from the GE stop-light model in BBA 302?
BCG is a 2 × 2 grid with one factor per axis: market growth rate and relative market share. The GE stop-light model, built by General Electric with McKinsey, is a 3 × 3 grid whose axes, industry attractiveness and business strength, each combine many weighted factors. BCG gives four cells; GE gives three colour zones. The notes compare both in a table on page 68.
Is BBA 302 compulsory for every BBA Semester 6 student?
Yes. In the revised BBA scheme, BBA 302 Business Policy and Strategy is listed as a Discipline Specific Course for the Major in Semester 6, not as an elective, so students of every specialisation take it. Electives start from BBA 306 and depend on your specialisation and what your college offers. BBA 304 Digital & Social Media Marketing is the other paper common to all.
