BBA 409 Unit 2: Introduction to Analytics in HR

Pages 27 to 47, 13 sections. Four levels of analytics from descriptive to prescriptive, a history from Taylor to Google's Project Oxygen, then data sources, formats, data types, data quality and the DPDP Act 2023, chart choice, statistical tests, predictive models and the LAMP framework. 2 worked examples.

  2. 40 is the expected score with zero training; each extra hour adds 2.5 points.
  3. 10 hours of training: 40 + 2.5 × 10 = 65.
  4. 16 hours of training: 40 + 2.5 × 16 = 80.

BBA 409 Unit 3: Advanced HR Analytics: Impact and Decision Making

Pages 48 to 64, 9 sections. Efficiency versus effectiveness, the results chain from input to impact and six ways to isolate a programme's effect. Then ROI, payback, the Phillips model, dashboards, the CIA triad and ethics. 3 worked examples and 4 practice numericals.

The BBA 409 notes list 45 short-answer and 35 long-answer questions across 4 units, plus 13 worked examples and 9 practice numericals. One question per unit:

  1. Unit I: Opening headcount 250, closing 270, separations 39. Find the attrition rate. Pointer: average headcount = (250 + 270) ÷ 2 = 260; attrition = 39 ÷ 260 × 100 = 15%.
  2. Unit II: What is the LAMP framework? Pointer: Logic, Analytics, Measures and Process; the four parts that link HR analytics to strategy.
  3. Unit III: Training cost ₹8 lakh, monetary benefits ₹20 lakh. Find ROI and BCR. Pointer: ROI = (20 − 8) ÷ 8 × 100 = 150%; BCR = 20 ÷ 8 = 2.5 : 1.
  4. Unit IV: What is the What, So What, Now What method? Pointer: observation, business meaning, then action, applied row by row to a dashboard.

Each BBA 409 syllabus topic was matched to a notes section using BBAwef2024_25_200125.pdf (session 2024-25 onwards). The 2026-27 edition adds Indian context such as the DPDP Act 2023, BRSR reporting and HRIS tools like Darwinbox. Updated 14 October 2026; see the editorial policy.

The same team prepares GGSIPU important questions for every course.

How to write BBA 409 answers: formula-first numericals and definition-led long answers

BBA 409 mixes theory and numericals. Start theory answers from a named definition: each unit has a "Standard Definitions (Write in Exam)" box, such as Fitz-enz for HR metrics and Bassi for HR analytics, then build from the unit's tables.

Numericals follow a fixed order: formula, substitution, result with its unit (%, ₹ or ratio), then one line on meaning. Revise from the formula summary on pages 23 and 24.

Worked example (practice numerical 5, Unit I): an employee had 4 separate spells of absence totalling 6 days. Bradford factor = S² × D = 4² × 6 = 96. Frequent short absences score higher than one long absence.

For Units III and IV, use the ready structures: the results chain, the eight Phillips ROI steps and the ten implementation steps, drawn as a labelled flow.

Avoid the errors the notes flag: one number without its trend, ignoring sample size (one resignation in a team of four is 25% attrition) and treating correlation as cause. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

BBA 409 and the GGSIPU BBA Sem 7 papers it connects to

BBA 409 has no paired lab, so its place in the programme is easiest to see on the GGSIPU BBA syllabus page.

Core Semester 7 papers: BBA 401 Project Management and BBA 403 Fundamentals of Actuarial Sciences. Other HRM electives: BBA 405 Compensation Management and BBA 407 Counseling Skills for Managers.

  • Unit I compensation metrics (compa-ratio, pay equity) → BBA 405 Compensation Management.
  • Unit II statistics (correlation, regression, ANOVA) → builds on BBA 204 Business Analytics (Semester 4).
  • Unit IV implementation roadmap (pilot, evaluate, scale) → BBA 401 Project Management.

Data-driven decisions and the HiPPO effect in HR analytics: excerpt from page 58 of the BBA 409 notes

Excerpt from page 58

What data-driven decision-making means

Data-driven decision-making (DDDM) means basing people decisions on reliable data and evidence instead of intuition, habit, tradition or simply the view of the most senior person in the room. That last trap has a name: the HiPPO effect, short for "Highest Paid Person's Opinion". When the HiPPO decides, the data in the HRIS is collected but never used.

Evidence-based HR: four sources

Rousseau, Pfeffer and Sutton describe evidence-based management as combining four kinds of evidence:

  1. Scientific evidence: findings from published research.
  2. Organisational evidence: the company's own HR data and metrics.
  3. Professional evidence: the experience and judgement of HR practitioners.
  4. Stakeholder evidence: the views and values of employees and managers.

So data-driven HR does not mean switching off human judgement. It means putting data and judgement together.

1. Define the problemWhy is first-year attrition 45% in our call centre?
2. Form hypothesesNight shifts, low pay, poor training or manager behaviour
3. Collect dataExit data, shift data, pay data, team-leader ratings
4. Analyse dataAttrition is twice as high in teams with new team leaders and on permanent night shifts
5. Generate insightsTeam-leader quality and shift pattern are the main drivers
6. Decide and actTrain new team leaders; rotate night shifts monthly
7. Measure resultsAfter 6 months, first-year attrition falls to 32%

Notice that pay, the most common guess, was a hypothesis the data did not support. Without step 4, the company might have raised salaries across the board, spent heavily and still lost the same staff.

Is there a PDF version of the BBA 409 notes?

No. The complete BBA 409 notes are available only as a printed book delivered to your address.

What is the passing mark for BBA 409?

BBA 409 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 in the end-term exam. The internal 40 is a 15-mark class test plus 25 marks for assignments, presentations, viva or class participation. Which BBA 409 unit has the most numericals?

Unit I. It has 8 worked examples, such as the recruitment funnel and the Bradford factor, plus 5 practice numericals with answers. Unit III comes next with 3 worked examples and 4 practice numericals on ROI, benefit-cost ratio, payback period and the control-group method. Units II and IV focus on regression, Excel formulas and dashboard reading.

Is BBA 409 compulsory in BBA Semester 7?

No. BBA 409 is an elective in the Human Resource Management group of BBA (Hons.) Semester 7. Students pick three Semester 7 electives: two from their major specialisation and one from their minor, so BBA 409 can count either way. The scheme also notes that electives run at the discretion of the college or university, so confirm availability with your institute.

Do the BBA 409 notes follow the revised 2024-25 BBA syllabus?

Yes. The BBA 409 notes were checked against BBAwef2024_25_200125.pdf, the NEP-based revised BBA scheme and syllabus that applies from academic session 2024-25.
