BBA 411 Unit 2: Data Collection Methods

Pages 22 to 41. Primary versus secondary data, Indian sources such as NSSO, NielsenIQ and BARC, and a seven-step literature review. Then qualitative tools, observation, questionnaire design, nine sampling techniques, sample size, coding and errors. Count: 9 solved short answers, 10 long-answer questions, 3 worked examples, 2 figures.

Quick look: sample size for a proportion at 95% confidence (from page 35)

  1. z = 1.96 (95% confidence); p = 0.5 (no earlier estimate); e = 0.05.
  2. n = z² × p(1 − p) ÷ e² = 0.9604 ÷ 0.0025 = 384.16, so 385 students.
  3. For a college of 2,000: 385 ÷ 1.192 = 323.

BBA 411 Unit 3: Hypothesis Testing and Marketing Analytics

Pages 42 to 58. Hypotheses, p-values, Type I and II errors, and parametric versus non-parametric tests with a test chooser. A software table maps each test to Excel, SPSS and Python, such as scipy.stats.chi2_contingency(). Then multivariate analysis, forecasting and sentiment analysis. Count: 6 solved examples, 8 solved short answers, 7 long-answer questions.

Quick look: a straight-line sales trend by least squares (from page 53)

  1. Sales (₹ lakh) 2020 to 2024: 40, 44, 50, 54, 62; X = −2 to +2 around 2022.
  2. ΣY = 250, ΣXY = 54, ΣX² = 10, so a = 250 ÷ 5 = 50 and b = 54 ÷ 10 = 5.4.
  3. Y = 50 + 5.4X; for 2025 (X = 3), Y = ₹66.2 lakh.

BBA 411 Unit 4: Marketing Research Applications and Ethical Considerations

Pages 59 to 71. Consumer research with CSAT and NPS; attitude scales from the ABC model to Fishbein; product research from concept tests to test markets; advertising research with DAGMAR, pre-tests, post-tests and GRP. Ethics covers each stakeholder and the DPDP Act 2023. Count: 10 solved short answers, 8 long-answer questions, 1 worked example.

Depth interviews and focus groups in marketing research: excerpt from page 27 of the BBA 411 notes

Excerpt from page 27

Direct and indirect qualitative methods

Qualitative procedures come in two kinds. Direct methods tell the respondent what the study is about; focus groups and depth interviews belong here. Indirect methods hide the purpose; these are the projective techniques.

What a depth interview is

A depth interview is an unstructured, direct, one-to-one personal interview. A single respondent is probed by a highly skilled interviewer to uncover underlying motivations, beliefs, attitudes and feelings on a topic. It usually lasts from 30 minutes to more than an hour.

Three techniques used inside a depth interview

  • Laddering: the interviewer climbs from product attributes to benefits to personal values. "Why SPF 50 sunscreen?" leads to "It protects my skin", then "I look good", then "I feel confident".
  • Hidden issue questioning: the focus stays on personal, sensitive "pain points" rather than general lifestyle.
  • Symbolic analysis: the meaning of an object is found by comparing it with its opposite, for example "What would it mean not to own a car?"

Strengths and weaknesses

Depth interviews uncover deeper insights than focus groups, every response can be tied to one person, and there is no group pressure. That suits sensitive topics such as health or money, and busy professionals such as doctors or CEOs. On the other side, skilled interviewers are costly and scarce, the lack of structure invites interviewer bias, the data is hard to interpret and only a few interviews fit the budget.

What a focus group is

A focus group is a discussion led by a trained moderator, in a non-structured and natural way, with a small group of respondents. Its purpose is to gain insight by listening to people talk about the issue. The notes call it the most important qualitative procedure.

Typical focus group set-up (excerpt, page 27)
Group size8 to 12 participants
CompositionHomogeneous and pre-screened (similar age, income, usage)
SettingRelaxed and informal; a room with a one-way mirror, or online
Duration1 to 3 hours, audio or video recorded

The group format brings the "10 S's": synergism, snowballing, stimulation, security, spontaneity, serendipity, specialisation, scientific scrutiny, structure and speed. Its main risk is misuse, when exploratory group findings are treated as conclusive.

Do the BBA 411 notes cover the full GGSIPU syllabus?

How to write BBA 411 answers: textbook definitions, research-process flowcharts and step-wise numericals

BBA 411 mixes theory with statistics, so the notes train two answer styles. For theory, each key term has a "Write in Exam" box with the standard definition, such as Kotler's or Malhotra's. Open a long answer with one, then build the body from the notes' comparison tables.

The notes' exam tips are specific. For the research process, draw the six-step flowchart and run one case, such as a soft-drink brand with falling sales, through every step. For a literature review, show that it compares studies and ends with a research gap.

For advertising research, split the answer into pre-testing and post-testing with four or five methods each, add a reach, GRP or CPM numerical, and name DAGMAR as the base for measurable goals.

Numericals follow one order: hypotheses, test chosen, formula, substitution, table value, decision, then a one-line marketing conclusion. That last line matters, because a bare number does not tell the manager what to do. Keep the formula boxes the notes mark "Write in Exam", such as n = z²σ² ÷ e² for sample size, on your revision sheet, and quote the table value (for example 3.841 for chi-square at 5% with 1 df) before you decide.

Worked example: Spearman rank correlation (page 48)

Two managers rank five ad concepts for a new campaign. Rank differences are −1, 1, −1, 1 and 0, so Σd² = 4 and n = 5. rs = 1 − (6 × 4) ÷ (5 × 24) = 1 − 0.2 = 0.80. Conclusion: the managers largely agree on which ads are strongest.

Three slips the notes guard against in BBA 411 answers: writing "accept H₀" instead of "fail to reject H₀", calling a reliable scale valid, and mixing up stratified and cluster sampling. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

The BBA 411 notes solve 35 two-to-five-mark questions and set 33 ten-to-fifteen-mark questions across 4 units, plus 10 worked numerical examples.

  1. Unit 1: Paired comparison pairs for 6 brands? 6 × 5 ÷ 2 = 15 pairs.
  2. Unit 2: Stratified vs cluster sampling. All homogeneous strata are sampled; only some heterogeneous clusters are.
  3. Unit 3: Exponential smoothing, forecast 200, actual 220, α = 0.2. F = 44 + 160 = 204 units.
  4. Unit 4: GRPs at 70% reach, frequency 3. 70 × 3 = 210.

The other 64 are in the printed notes. More practice sits in the BBA 411 important questions.

BBA 411 is marked out of 100: 40 internal marks (class test 15, activities 25) and 60 end-term marks. The revised BBA scheme of examination does not print a pass percentage, so we do not state one. End-term minimums and re-appear rules are set by Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in; check it and your college notices.

Does BBA 411 have a practical or lab paper?

No. BBA 411 is a 4-credit theory paper (L-4, T-0) with no separate lab code. The syllabus only notes that practicals using Python, Power BI, Tableau or Excel dashboards should be added where applicable. The notes cover this with a task table at the end of each unit, such as computing Cronbach's alpha in Python.

Which BBA 411 unit has the most numericals?

Unit 3. It has 6 solved examples: a one-sample t-test, a chi-square test of independence, Spearman's rank correlation, a moving average with a least-squares trend, exponential smoothing and lexicon-based sentiment scoring. Two of its long-answer questions are numericals with printed answers. Unit 2 adds 3 sample-size examples and Unit 4 one Net Promoter Score example.

Is BBA 411 a major or a minor paper?

It depends on your specialisation. BBA 411 is a Semester 7 Marketing paper, and students pick three electives: two for the major and one for the minor. Marketing majors take it as a Major Elective; Marketing minors take it as the Minor Elective. Either way it carries 4 credits, and colleges offer electives at their discretion.

Do the BBA 411 notes follow the revised 2024-25 BBA scheme?

Yes. The BBA 411 notes follow the revised NEP-based BBA scheme and syllabus that applies from academic session 2024-25, and each official topic in Units I to IV is mapped to a section and page in the syllabus table above. If your college follows an older scheme, compare its unit list with our printed notes first.
