JIT and the total cost approach in industrial logistics: excerpt from page 44 of the BBA 415 notes
Excerpt from page 44, Unit 4, section 5.3 "Physical Distribution Models".
(a) Just-in-Time (JIT) system
JIT is a system in which materials and components reach the buyer exactly when production needs them, in small lots, with almost no inventory held at the buyer's plant. It grew out of the Toyota Production System.
What JIT asks of suppliers
- Zero-defect quality, because there is no spare stock to fall back on.
- Frequent, precise deliveries, often several times a day.
- A location close to the buyer's plant.
- Delivery schedules linked to the buyer through EDI, plus long-term contracts.
Benefits to the buyer
Lower inventory cost, less floor space, better quality and faster detection of problems, because a faulty lot shows up at once instead of sitting in a store room.
What it means for the industrial marketer
JIT favours a small number of reliable suppliers in long partnerships. Suppliers often build plants in vendor parks beside the OEM so they can deliver on time every time.
The risk
Any break in supply, such as a strike, a flood or the COVID-19 shutdown, can stop the buyer's production line. Many firms now keep "Just-in-Case" buffer stocks of critical parts for this reason.
Real-life example: Maruti Suzuki's Manesar and Gurugram plants receive many components several times a day from suppliers in nearby vendor parks, a clear case of JIT in India.
(b) Total cost approach
The total cost approach says logistics decisions should keep the total cost of distribution as low as possible, not the cost of any one activity. Logistics costs are linked, so cutting one can raise another. These are called cost trade-offs.
Total distribution cost = transportation cost + warehousing cost + inventory carrying cost + order processing cost + cost of lost sales (stock-outs).
- Air freight raises transport cost but cuts inventory and warehousing cost.
- More warehouses lower transport cost and delivery time but raise inventory and warehousing cost.
- The best system is the one where total cost is lowest while the required customer service level is still met.
The notes draw this trade-off as Figure 9, a graph of transport cost falling and inventory cost rising, with total cost lowest where the two balance.
How to write BBA 415 answers: model diagrams, comparison tables and Indian B2B examples
Ten- or fifteen-mark answers on a model (Sheth, Webster and Wind, the life cycle): page 21 suggests five blocks. Name the author, draw it, explain each part, give merits and limits, end with marketer implications.
"Differentiate" questions: write a table of at least ten points (page 9 has 13) and add an Indian example per side, such as Bosch selling brakes to Tata Motors.
Mistakes the notes flag:
- OEM vs user: motors Voltas fits inside its ACs are an OEM purchase; motors running its conveyor are a user purchase (page 7).
- Distributor vs agent: a distributor owns the goods and earns a margin; an agent earns commission (page 42).
- A perceptual map shows buyer perception, not specifications (page 34).
- On sales reps, link behaviour to perception, trust and repeat business (page 24).
Worked example, cost-ratio vendor rating (page 22): Vendor X quotes ₹100 with quality, delivery and service cost ratios of 3%, 2% and 1%, so 100 × 1.06 = ₹106. Vendor Y quotes ₹102 with 1%, so 102 × 1.01 = ₹103.02. Y is cheaper in real terms.
In Units 3 and 4, name one Indian rule such as GeM or the Competition Act, 2002. Practise this format on GGSIPU BBA important questions.
