NPA classification, provisioning and recovery in Indian banking: excerpt from page 27 of the BBA 417 notes
Excerpt from page 27
Meaning of an NPA
A non-performing asset (NPA) is a loan or advance where interest or principal stays overdue for more than 90 days. Once a loan turns into an NPA, it stops earning income for the bank, so the bank must also set money aside (a provision) against a possible loss.
| Facility | Becomes an NPA when |
|---|---|
| Term loan | Interest or instalment is overdue for more than 90 days |
| Cash credit / overdraft | The account stays "out of order" for more than 90 days |
| Bills purchased / discounted | The bill stays overdue for more than 90 days |
| Agricultural loan | Overdue for two crop seasons (short-duration crops) or one crop season (long-duration crops) |

Asset classification and provisioning
Banks place every loan in one of four classes. A standard asset is performing normally and carries a general provision of 0.40% (higher for some sectors). A sub-standard asset has been an NPA for up to 12 months and needs a 15% provision.
A doubtful asset has stayed sub-standard for 12 months and is split into D1, D2 and D3: the unsecured part needs 100%, while the secured part needs 25%, 40% and 100% respectively. A loss asset is one the bank, its auditor or RBI has found unrecoverable, and it is provided for in full.
Why loans go bad
The notes group the causes into three sets. External causes include an economic slowdown, natural calamities, policy changes and delayed government payments. Borrower-side causes are poor management, diversion of funds and wilful default. Bank-side causes are weak appraisal, poor monitoring, lending too much to one sector and pressure to meet lending targets.
How banks recover NPAs
Small NPAs up to ₹20 lakh can be settled by compromise at a Lok Adalat. Debts Recovery Tribunals handle dues of ₹20 lakh and above under the RDB Act, 1993. The SARFAESI Act, 2002 lets a bank seize and sell secured assets without going to court after 60 days' notice, and set up Asset Reconstruction Companies.
The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 resolves stressed companies through the NCLT within fixed timelines. A One-Time Settlement lets the bank accept a reduced amount to close the account, and NARCL, the national "bad bank" set up in 2021, buys large NPAs from banks.

BBA 417 and the GGSIPU BBA Sem 7 papers it connects to
BBA 417 has no lab; every BBA paper is listed in the GGSIPU BBA syllabus.
In Semester 7 it sits beside BBA 401 Project Management, BBA 403 Fundamentals of Actuarial Sciences and the Finance electives BBA 419 Behavioural Finance and BBA 421 Corporate Taxation.
- Unit 1 markets and SEBI build on BBA 211 Security Analysis and Portfolio Management (Sem 3).
- Unit 2 working-capital methods use BBA 301 Financial Management (Sem 5).
- Unit 3 UPI and e-banking extend BBA 112 E-Commerce (Sem 2).
- Unit 4 CRM overlaps with BBA 413 Customer Relationship Management (Sem 7).
How to write BBA 417 answers: comparison tables, flow diagrams and section-cited banking law points
BBA 417 answers score when each concept carries a law, section or RBI rule. The notes' exam tips give three habits:
- Split, then tabulate. For monetary control, list quantitative tools (CRR, SLR, Repo, SDF, MSF, Bank Rate, OMO) and qualitative tools (margin, rationing, moral suasion, direct action) with one line of effect each, then add the CRR vs SLR table.
- Draw it. Basel II fits as three pillars under one roof; money laundering as placement, layering, integration.
- Cite the provision. In IT Act answers, name Sec. 43, 43A, 66, 66C and 66D with an example (phishing = 66D, OTP misuse = 66C). In POSH answers, name Vishaka (1997), the 2013 Act, the Internal Committee, the 3-month complaint limit and the 90-day inquiry.
The notes flag four common mistakes: SLR is kept by the bank, not RBI; lien does not cover safe-custody items; SWIFT sends messages but never moves money; and RBI does not fix deposit or loan rates, which are deregulated.
Worked example: Gross NPA vs Net NPA
After defining an NPA, write the formula on its own line: Net NPA = Gross NPA - Provisions held. Then add figures: with gross NPAs of ₹500 crore and provisions of ₹300 crore, net NPA is ₹200 crore. The notes advise adding this formula to every NPA answer.
Practise this format on the GGSIPU BBA important questions.

How do I get the full BBA 417 notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" at the top or the WhatsApp button at the end of this page and send the pre-filled BBA 417 message. The full notes come only as a printed book of 57 pages covering all 4 units; they are not available as a PDF. Delivery takes a maximum of 5-7 days, depending on your location. Price and payment details are shared on WhatsApp.
Is BBA 417 a compulsory paper in GGSIPU BBA Semester 7?
No. BBA 417 is a Finance specialisation elective in the fourth year of BBA (Hons.). Students pick three Sem 7 electives, two for the major and one for the minor, and colleges decide which electives they actually run. The compulsory Sem 7 papers are BBA 401 Project Management and BBA 403 Fundamentals of Actuarial Sciences.
How many marks is BBA 417, and what is the passing mark?
BBA 417 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 are 15 for a class test and 25 for at least two activities such as assignments, presentations or viva-voce. The BBA scheme of examination does not print a pass percentage, so check GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in for end-term minimums and re-appear rules.
Which unit of BBA 417 has the most material in the notes?
Unit 2, Functions of Banks and Banking Operations, is the largest part of the BBA 417 notes: 15 pages and 15 sections, from the banker-customer relationship to financial inclusion, with 4 flow diagrams. Unit 4 also runs to 15 pages but has 12 sections, while Units 1 and 3 have 12 pages each. Every unit ends with five short-answer questions.
Do the BBA 417 notes follow the revised 2024-25 GGSIPU syllabus?
Yes. The BBA 417 notes use the four unit titles printed in the revised NEP-based BBA scheme that applies from academic session 2024-25. Every listed topic, from Primary Dealers and BCSBI to SWIFT, computer audit and whistleblowing, has its own section, and the syllabus-map table above gives the page range for each unit so you can check it.
Are the BBA 417 notes updated for recent RBI changes?
Yes, up to the 2025 changes printed in the book. BBA 417 topics such as CRR, priority-sector targets, MSME limits and nomination rules carry their 2025 figures, along with the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme and digital-lending rules. Because rates change often, the notes ask you to confirm the latest CRR and repo figures on the RBI website before the exam.
