Repatriate training and reverse culture shock in IHRM: excerpt from page 24 of the BBA 423 notes
Excerpt from page 24
What repatriation means
Repatriation is the return of an expatriate, and the family, to the home country at the end of an international assignment. Many companies ignore this stage, yet it is a critical part of the expatriate cycle: a badly handled return can undo the value of the whole posting and push a trained global manager out of the company.
The expatriate cycle in six stages
Selection, then pre-departure training, then the assignment itself (adjustment and performance), then preparation for return, physical relocation and re-entry, and finally readjustment and reintegration into the home organisation.
Problems of repatriation
Reverse culture shock is the shock felt on returning to one's own culture after a long stay abroad. Put together with the culture shock felt on arrival, the adjustment traces a W-curve, which is two U-curves joined.
- Career anxiety: no suitable post on return, and the fear that peers at home were promoted ("out of sight, out of mind").
- Work adjustment: loss of the autonomy, status and responsibility enjoyed abroad; skills learnt overseas go unused.
- Loss of financial benefits: housing, hardship and school-fee allowances stop.
- Family readjustment: children change schools, the spouse may lose a job or social life, friends have moved on.
- Reverse culture shock itself: the home country has changed during the posting, and the returnee feels like a "stranger at home".
- Attrition: many repatriates leave within one to two years, taking costly global knowledge with them.
What repatriate training contains
A pre-return briefing on changes in structure, policy, technology and people; career counselling on the next role; financial counselling on the home salary, tax and housing; psychological and family counselling for reverse culture shock; a re-orientation on the home economy and work practices; and knowledge-sharing sessions where the returnee passes global learning to home teams.

- Unit I: Explain the approaches (EPRG) to IHRM with merits and demerits. Pointer: Perlmutter, four approaches with merits, demerits and a company each, then the table.
- Unit III: What is tax equalisation? Pointer: the MNE pays any extra tax so the expatriate's burden stays as at home.
- Unit IV: An HRIS costs Rs 50 lakh, runs at Rs 12 lakh a year and saves Rs 32 lakh a year. Find payback and 4-year ROI. Pointer: net Rs 20 lakh, payback 2.5 years, ROI (80 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 = 60%.

How to write BBA 423 answers: EPRG comparisons, balance-sheet numericals and fifteen-mark compensation essays
The notes warn against writing only a table: for a 10-mark "IHRM vs domestic HRM" question, explain Dowling's six factors in short paragraphs first, then add the table, because examiners look for theory and contrast.
For a 15-mark compensation answer, follow one order: objectives, components, approaches (going rate vs balance sheet), variables, emerging issues. The balance-sheet flowchart plus a small numerical makes it stand out. A selection answer names the five factors (technical ability, cross-cultural suitability, family, country and MNE requirements) and adds one line on expatriate failure.
For 2–5 mark answers, give a one-line definition, the name behind the model (Morgan, Perlmutter, Tung, Dunlop) and one Indian or global company example; that pattern fits questions such as "What is the geocentric approach?" or "What is employee self-service?".
Two mix-ups cost marks. Expatriate training happens around going abroad; repatriate training happens around coming home. And the HR manager does not "do the programming" of an HRIS: the role is to define requirements, test, approve, train and use. For "Design of HRIS", draw the eight SDLC steps and name the four rollout methods: parallel, pilot, phased and direct. For ILO answers, write the year (1919), the Geneva HQ, the tripartite structure and the Tripartite Declaration on MNEs.
Worked example: the Unit III Dubai numerical
- Salary Rs 24 lakh. Goods and services 45% = Rs 10.8 lakh; at a Dubai index of 150 they cost Rs 16.2 lakh, so COLA = Rs 5.4 lakh.
- Housing 20% = Rs 4.8 lakh at home vs Rs 15 lakh in Dubai: allowance = Rs 10.2 lakh.
- Foreign Service Premium at 10% = Rs 2.4 lakh.
- Package = 24 + 5.4 + 10.2 + 2.4 = Rs 42 lakh a year, plus tax equalisation.

BBA 423 and the GGSIPU BBA Sem 7 papers it connects to
BBA 423 has no paired lab; see the GGSIPU BBA syllabus.
In Semester 7 it runs with the core papers BBA 401 Project Management and BBA 403 Fundamentals of Actuarial Sciences, and beside BBA 425 International Marketing and BBA 427 International Supply Chain Management.
Unit III overlaps with BBA 405 Compensation Management, and Unit IV leads into BBA 409 Human Resource Metrics and Analytics. BBA 106 Human Resource Management (Sem 2) is the domestic base, and BBA 406 Cross Cultural and Global Management (Sem 8) extends the Hofstede and Hall models of Unit I.

Are the BBA 423 notes available as a PDF download?
No. The full BBA 423 notes are sold only as a printed book, so there is no full PDF to download. The unit summaries, quick looks and excerpt on this page stay free to read.
How many marks is BBA 423 out of, and what is the passing mark?
BBA 423 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. Internal marks are a 15-mark class test plus 25 for assignments, viva or group discussion. The BBA scheme of examination PDF does not print a pass percentage for this paper, so we do not quote one. End-term minimums and re-appear rules sit in Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Which BBA 423 units have numericals?
Units III and IV. Unit III solves a balance-sheet illustration for an Indian manager posted to Singapore and sets a practice numerical on a Dubai posting. Unit IV solves an HRIS payback and ROI illustration and sets a similar practice question. Units I and II are pure theory, built on models such as EPRG and Hofstede.
Is BBA 423 a major or minor elective in BBA Sem 7?
It can be either. BBA 423 is listed under the International Business specialisation for Semester 7, where students select three papers: two for the major and one for the minor. Yes. The BBA 423 notes follow the revised NEP-based BBA scheme in force from academic session 2024-25, including newer topics such as HR 5.0, RPA in recruitment and Augmented Reality.
