  3. Chargeable weight is the higher: 200 kg.
  4. Freight at ₹180 + ₹25 fuel per kg: 200 × 205 = ₹41,000.

BBA 427 Unit 3: International Procurement and Sourcing

Unit III, the longest unit, runs from the ten-step procure-to-pay cycle and Monczka's five sourcing levels to Dickson's vendor criteria, should-cost and landed-cost analysis, BATNA and ZOPA, SRM, contract clauses, supplier KPIs such as OTIF, and procurement risks. It ends with GeM, SAP Ariba, smart contracts and AI negotiation tools.

Seven cases follow, from the 2000 Philips fire to the Red Sea crisis. The rest covers emission scopes, green logistics, Section 135 CSR and quick-commerce models.

The BBA 427 notes list 33 short-answer and 37 long-answer exam questions across 4 units, plus 14 worked numericals.

  1. Unit I: What is meant by "China + 1" strategy? Adding a second production country besides China to cut concentration risk, as Apple and Samsung did in India and Vietnam (pages 11 and 13).
  2. Unit II: Explain cross-docking with an example. Goods pass from inbound to outbound trucks with little storage; Walmart's cross-docks hold goods under 24 hours (pages 26 and 27).
  3. Unit III: What is a force majeure clause? It excuses performance when war, a pandemic or a natural disaster stops delivery (page 53).
  4. Unit IV: Explain Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Own sources, bought energy, and the rest of the value chain, often 70 to 90% of a firm's footprint (pages 77 and 78).

Kraljic matrix and make-or-buy in global sourcing: excerpt from page 45 of the BBA 427 notes

Excerpt from page 45

The Kraljic matrix places every purchased item on two scales: profit impact and supply risk, each rated high or low. Crossing the two gives four boxes, and each box gets its own buying strategy and its own kind of example.

The four Kraljic categories

  • Strategic items (high impact, high risk): build long-term partnerships, collaborate and develop products jointly. Example: semiconductors for a car maker.
  • Leverage items (high impact, low risk): use buying power through competitive bidding and global tendering. Example: steel, packaging, standard chemicals.
  • Bottleneck items (low impact, high risk): secure supply, hold safety stock and look for alternatives. Example: rare spare parts, special additives.
  • Non-critical or routine items (low impact, low risk): simplify, automate through e-catalogues and cut admin cost. Example: office supplies, cleaning materials.

Exam tip from the notes: draw the 2×2 matrix with profit impact on the Y-axis and supply risk on the X-axis. It is one of the most valued diagrams in procurement answers.

Sourcing decision model 1: make or buy

The make-or-buy decision asks whether an item should be produced in-house or purchased from outside. A firm leans towards making when the item is a core competency, when it must protect intellectual property, when it has idle capacity, when it wants tighter quality control or when suppliers are unreliable.

It leans towards buying when the activity is not core, when a supplier has better technology, when it lacks capacity or skills, when the supplier's economies of scale give a lower cost, when it wants flexibility without heavy investment, or when volumes are small.

Worked numerical

Annual requirement is 10,000 units. Making costs a fixed ₹2,00,000 plus ₹40 a unit, so ₹2,00,000 + ₹4,00,000 = ₹6,00,000. Buying at ₹55 a unit costs ₹5,50,000. Decision: buy, saving ₹50,000.

Break-even volume = Fixed cost ÷ (Buy price − Variable cost) = 2,00,000 ÷ (55 − 40) = 13,333 units. Above this volume, making becomes cheaper.

Do the BBA 427 notes cover the full GGSIPU syllabus?

  • Unit I WTO and GATT (pages 11 and 12) → revision of BBA 320 WTO and Intellectual Property Rights (Semester 6).

How to write BBA 427 answers: difference tables, case-study answers and freight numericals

Difference questions. "Global vs. domestic" or "intermodal vs. multimodal" need a table of at least 8 points; the notes' own global vs. domestic table has 11 bases (pages 8 and 9).

Long answers. For a 15-mark SCM question: CSCMP and Chopra definitions, scope in points, the SCOR table, the three flows, one example and a supplier-to-customer flow diagram (page 6).

Case studies. Use four heads. The Philips fire case (pages 71 and 76):

  • What happened: in 2000 lightning set fire to a Philips chip plant supplying Nokia and Ericsson.
  • Impact: Ericsson lost an estimated $400 million in sales.
  • Response: Nokia spotted it fast, formed a crisis team and secured other supplies; Ericsson reacted slowly.
  • Lesson: monitoring, speed and multiple sourcing matter more than the event.

Numericals. Formula first, then each step, then the decision (page 40). Use the IATA divisor of 6,000 for air cargo, and take the higher of tonnes and cubic metres for LCL W/M.

Practise these formats on GGSIPU BBA important questions.

How do I get the full BBA 427 notes?

Message us on WhatsApp at 9899436384 using the "Get Full Notes" button on this page. The full BBA 427 notes come only as a printed book, not as a PDF. Once your order is confirmed, the book is dispatched to your address and normally reaches you within 5 to 7 days, depending on your location.

Is BBA 427 a major or a minor elective in BBA Semester 7?

It can be either. In Semester 7, students pick three electives: two from their major specialisation and one from their minor. BBA 427 sits under International Business, so it counts as a Discipline Specific Course for an International Business major and as an Inter-disciplinary Course for a minor. Either way it carries 4 credits and four lecture hours a week.

How is BBA 427 marked, and what is the passing mark?

BBA 427 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 in the end-term exam. The internal 40 is a 15-mark class test plus 25 marks from at least two activities such as assignments, presentations or viva. The BBA scheme does not print a pass percentage, so end-term minimums, pass rules and re-appear rules come from Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.

Which BBA 427 unit has the most numericals?

Unit II. It has 6 of the 14 worked numericals in the BBA 427 notes: centre of gravity for warehouse location, EOQ, reorder point, LCL freight on W/M, air freight chargeable weight and CIF value. Unit III follows with 5, covering make-or-buy, weighted point scoring, landed cost, the cost-ratio method and a risk score. Both units also carry one numerical exam question.

Do the BBA 427 notes follow the revised 2024-25 syllabus?

Yes. The BBA 427 notes follow the NEP-based revised BBA scheme that applies from academic session 2024-25, and their four unit titles match that PDF word for word. If your college still follows an older BBA scheme, compare its Semester 7 paper list with the official PDF linked in the syllabus map before you order the book.

Are Incoterms 2020 and shipping documents covered in the BBA 427 notes?

Yes. BBA 427 Unit I introduces Incoterms on page 10, and Unit II gives the full Incoterms 2020 table on page 39, split into any-mode and sea-only terms from EXW to DDP. Pages 38 and 39 explain 14 shipping documents, from the commercial invoice and bill of lading to the mate's receipt, plus five types of bill of lading.
