Mosaic and unintentional plagiarism in research writing: excerpt from page 24 of the BBA 402 notes
Excerpt from page 24
Mosaic plagiarism (patchwriting)
Mosaic plagiarism happens when a writer lifts phrases and sentences from a source and blends them with a few words of their own, or swaps some words for synonyms, while keeping the original sentence structure. There are no quotation marks and no citation, so the finished text looks like a mosaic built from pieces of someone else's work.
Original: "Small firms face difficulty in obtaining bank credit because they lack collateral and proper financial records."
Mosaic version: "Small companies face problems in getting bank loans as they do not have collateral and proper financial records." The structure is unchanged, a few words are replaced and nothing is cited.
Correct paraphrase: "Lenders often refuse loans to small businesses because these firms cannot offer security and do not keep reliable accounts (Gupta, 2021)." Both the words and the structure change, and the source is named.
Patchwriting is hard to see with the naked eye, but modern detection software matches phrases and sentence patterns, so it is caught easily.
Unintentional (accidental) plagiarism
Here the writer does not mean to copy but fails to give proper credit through carelessness or lack of knowledge. There is no intention to cheat, yet it is still treated as plagiarism and can attract penalties. Common causes:
- Not knowing how to cite or paraphrase properly.
- Forgetting quotation marks while taking notes.
- Losing track of sources, so notes carry no record of where they came from.
- Paraphrasing too closely to the original.
- Wrong or incomplete citation, such as the wrong author or year.
- Believing that information on the internet is free and need not be cited.
How to avoid it
Keep a source log while reading, use a reference manager such as Zotero or Mendeley, put quotation marks in your notes straight away, and check the final draft with plagiarism software before submission.
The page then opens a table of other forms of plagiarism, starting with direct (verbatim), paraphrasing, source-based and idea plagiarism.

How to write BBA 402 answers: definition-led theory answers, case-study breakdowns and three-style citations
BBA 402 has almost no numericals, only the impact factor and h-index examples, so marks come from structure. The exam tips in the notes give a pattern for each question type:
- "Explain" questions: meaning, two or three definitions (Redman and Mory, Clifford Woody, C.R. Kothari), at least eight characteristics, then Kothari's objectives table.
- Process questions: draw the research process as one flow chart, then explain each box.
- Case studies: two or three cases, each under Background, Ethical Breach, Consequences and Lesson Learnt.
- Drafting: minutes go in the past tense and third person, record decisions rather than every word, and number each item.
- Literature reviews: synthesis, not a list; group studies by theme and end on the research gap.
- Citations: write the same book in all three styles.
Worked example: one book in three styles (pages 53 to 54)

How do I get the full BBA 402 notes?
Tap Get Full Notes to message us on WhatsApp at 9899436384. The BBA 402 notes are sold as a printed book only; they are not available as a PDF. We confirm your address and order on WhatsApp, and the book reaches you within 5 to 7 days at most, depending on your location.
Is BBA 402 a compulsory paper in BBA Semester 8?
BBA 402 is listed in both Semester 8 schemes, BBA (Hons.) and BBA (Hons. with Research), as an Inter-disciplinary Course (Minor) worth 4 credits with 4 lecture hours a week. Semester 8 exists only for students who continue into the fourth year, so those who leave with the three-year degree after Semester 6 do not take BBA 402.
How many marks is BBA 402 out of, and what is the passing mark?
BBA 402 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 is a 15-mark class test plus 25 marks from at least two activities such as assignments, presentations, viva-voce or group discussion. The BBA scheme of examination does not print a pass percentage, so check end-term minimums and re-appear rules in GGSIPU Ordinance 11.

Will the BBA 402 notes help with the BBA 412 dissertation?
They help with its ethics and writing side. Hons. with Research students get the thesis structure, research proposal headings, a sample consent statement, the UGC plagiarism levels and three citation styles in one place. The notes are study material for learning these skills, not a ready-made dissertation, and your guide's and university's format rules always come first.
Are the BBA 402 notes based on the revised 2024-25 syllabus?
Yes. They follow the NEP based revised BBA scheme and syllabus, w.e.f. academic session 2024-25, published on ipu.ac.in as BBAwef2024_25_200125.pdf. The four unit titles match the official ones word for word, and every listed topic, from ICMR guidelines to UGC-CARE, has its own section. Students admitted before 2024-25 should check their own scheme and syllabus first.
