IMF objectives, functions and quotas in international business: excerpt from page 38 of the BBA 430 notes
Excerpt from page 38
The World Bank and India
India is a founder member of the World Bank and one of the largest borrowers from the IBRD. It borrowed from IDA until 2014. Bank-supported work in India includes rural roads under PMGSY, Swachh Bharat, the dedicated freight corridors, education and health programmes, and climate resilience.
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
The IMF was created at Bretton Woods in 1944 and started operations in 1945/1947. Its headquarters is in Washington D.C. and it has 191 member countries. It aims to promote global monetary cooperation, exchange-rate stability and balanced growth of trade.
Objectives (Article I of the IMF Agreement)
- Promote international monetary cooperation.
- Help international trade grow in a balanced way.
- Promote exchange-rate stability and avoid competitive devaluations.
- Help set up a multilateral system of payments.
- Give temporary financial help to members facing balance-of-payments problems.
- Shorten and reduce balance-of-payments disequilibrium.
Functions of the IMF
- Surveillance: it monitors member economies through Article IV consultations and publishes the World Economic Outlook and the Global Financial Stability Report.
- Lending: loans to countries with balance-of-payments problems through the Stand-By Arrangement, Extended Fund Facility, Rapid Financing Instrument and, for poor countries, the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust. Loans come with conditionality, meaning policy reforms.
- Capacity development: technical help and training in tax, central banking and statistics.
- Special Drawing Rights (SDR): a reserve asset created in 1969, valued on a basket of five currencies: the US dollar, euro, Chinese renminbi, Japanese yen and British pound.
Quotas
Each member gets a quota based on its economic size, and the quota decides its subscription, voting power and access to funds. The USA has the largest share, about 16.5% of votes, which gives it a veto on major decisions that need an 85% majority. India's voting share is about 2.6 to 2.7%.
IMF and India
India borrowed from the IMF in 1981 and again in the 1991 balance-of-payments crisis, when the loan supported the LPG reforms. India repaid in full and has not borrowed since 1993.
How to write BBA 430 answers: EPRG tables, factor-rating numericals and fifteen-mark answers with Indian examples
Short answers carry 2.5 or 5 marks and long answers 7.5 or 15, so length follows the marks. The notes' exam tips give a structure for each type:
- Fifteen-mark evolution answer: phase-wise headings with years, one Indian example per phase, and the evolution flowchart (page 8).
- Comparison answers: EPRG on five bases in one table (page 13); IMF against World Bank works the same way (page 39).
- Factor questions: PESTEL headings plus two or three recent cases such as the Red Sea crisis, CBAM or US tariffs (page 56).
- Unit 3 operations answers: one diagram, such as the global sourcing process, and one real firm such as Apple, Hyundai or Tata (page 50).
Slips the notes flag: treating FDI and FPI as the same (FDI means control, generally 10% equity or more), writing "profit" in the TNI formula instead of employment, and listing economic indicators without saying how each changes a business decision.
Worked example (factor rating, page 47): weights total 1, score each country out of 10, multiply and add.
| Factor | Weight | India (weighted) | Vietnam (weighted) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labour cost | 0.30 | 8 (2.40) | 9 (2.70) |
| Market size | 0.25 | 10 (2.50) | 6 (1.50) |
| Infrastructure | 0.20 | 7 (1.40) | 7 (1.40) |
| Govt. incentives (PLI) | 0.15 | 9 (1.35) | 7 (1.05) |
| Political stability | 0.10 | 8 (0.80) | 8 (0.80) |

Is BBA 430 compulsory in GGSIPU BBA Semester 8?
No. BBA 430 is an optional major elective in the International Business specialisation. In Sem 8 of the BBA (Hons.), students take BBA 402 and BBA 404 and choose three major electives, offered at the college's or university's discretion. Students on the Hons. with Research track write the BBA 412 dissertation instead of these electives.
What is the passing mark for BBA 430?
BBA 430 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 is a 15-mark class test plus 25 marks for activities such as assignments or a viva. The BBA scheme PDF does not print a pass percentage for this paper, so check end-term minimums and re-appear rules in GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Which unit of the BBA 430 notes is the longest?
Unit 3 on Multinational Enterprises and International Operations Management runs from page 31 to 51, 21 of the 62 content pages. It has 22 sections in three parts (MNEs, international economic institutions and operations management), 10 short-answer and 9 long-answer questions, both worked numericals and five example boxes. Unit 2 is the shortest, at 12 pages.
Does BBA 430 include numericals?
The BBA 430 notes include two worked numericals, both in Unit 3. One calculates the UNCTAD Transnationality Index from foreign sales, assets and employees. The other uses the factor-rating method to compare India and Vietnam as plant locations. The rest of the paper is theory, which the notes organise through 45 tables and 14 flowcharts.
Do the BBA 430 notes follow the revised 2024-25 GGSIPU syllabus?
Yes. The BBA 430 notes follow the revised NEP scheme, w.e.f. 2024-25, which lists the paper at 4 credits with four 15-hour units. That PDF numbers the units without titles, so the notes use their own titles. Each topic listed under Units I to IV maps to a numbered section and page in the notes.
