How to write BBA 434 answers: formula-led valuation numericals and ten-mark compare questions
BBA 434 mixes valuation numericals (post-money stake, VC Method, DCF, runway, LTV to CAC) with ten-mark "explain" and "distinguish" questions. Copy the book's shape: a formula strip for methods, a table for comparisons.
Numericals in four lines: formula as printed, working in ₹ crore or ₹ lakh, the answer in bold, one line on what it means.
Worked example (Unit 1, question 8, page 11)
Pre-money ₹12 crore, raise ₹3 crore. Post-money = 12 + 3 = ₹15 crore. Investor's stake = 3 ÷ 15 × 100 = 20%. The founders keep 80%, so a higher pre-money figure means less equity given away for the same money.
Ten-mark theory: a two-line definition, the notes' own headings as sub-points, and a table in every "distinguish" answer.
Three slips the notes warn about: g must stay below r (pages 14 and 25); risk goes into cash flows or the discount rate, never fully both (page 25); equity value is EV minus debt plus cash (page 13). Practise on GGSIPU BBA important questions.
BBA 434 and the GGSIPU BBA Sem 8 papers it connects to
BBA 434 has no lab paper; its outcomes sit in the GGSIPU BBA syllabus with the other entrepreneurship electives.
Semester 8 also has BBA 432 Family Business Management, BBA 436 Government & Institutional Support System for MSMEs, and the compulsory BBA 402 Research Ethics and Writing and BBA 404 AI and ML in Business.
- Unit 1 funding sources → BBA 431 Financial Services & Institutional Support for Startups (Sem 7), Unit II on VC and angels.
- Unit 3 projections → BBA 433 Research and Development of Business Plans (Sem 7), on projected financials.
- Unit 4 compliance → BBA 319 Legal & Regulatory Framework of Startup (Sem 5).
Unit 2 is the new ground: no earlier basket paper teaches the VC, First Chicago and risk-adjusted methods.
The Venture Capital Method of startup valuation: excerpt from page 16 of the BBA 434 notes
Excerpt from page 16
The VC Method, developed by Prof. William Sahlman at Harvard, values a startup by working backwards from the value it is expected to reach at exit. It is the most popular method for early-stage startups that have no positive cash flows yet, because it does not need a long run of past earnings.
Steps
- Estimate the exit value at the time of exit, usually 5 to 7 years away: expected earnings or revenue in the exit year multiplied by an industry multiple.
- Decide the VC's target rate of return, usually 30% to 70%, depending on the stage and the risk.
- Calculate today's post-money valuation = Exit value ÷ (1 + target return)n.
- Find the pre-money valuation = Post-money minus the investment.
- Work out the ownership needed = Investment ÷ Post-money, then adjust for dilution in later rounds.
Formulas
Post-money valuation = Terminal value ÷ (1 + target return)n. Required ownership with dilution = Investment ÷ Post-money ÷ Retention ratio.
Illustration
Expected profit in Year 5 is ₹15 crore and the industry P/E is 20, so the exit value is ₹300 crore. The VC's target return is 50%, and (1.5)5 = 7.594, so post-money today = 300 ÷ 7.594 = ₹39.51 crore. The VC invests ₹8 crore, so pre-money = 39.51 minus 8 = ₹31.51 crore, and the stake required is 8 ÷ 39.51 = 20.25%.
If later rounds will dilute holdings by 20% (a retention ratio of 0.80), the stake needed today rises to 20.25% ÷ 0.80 = 25.3%.
Merits and limitations
The method is simple, matches how VCs actually think, works for pre-profit startups, builds risk into the target return and links valuation directly to the ownership negotiation. On the other side, the exit value and the multiple are guesses, a very high target return makes the value look low, and it considers only one scenario, the success case.

BBA 434 Business Valuation notes FAQs
How do I get the full BBA 434 notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" or the WhatsApp button at the end of this page and send the pre-filled message. The BBA 434 notes come as a printed book of 35 pages covering all 4 units; they are not sold as a PDF. Delivery takes a maximum of 5 to 7 days, and the exact time depends on your location.
Is BBA 434 compulsory for every GGSIPU BBA student in Semester 8?
No. BBA 434 is an elective in the Entrepreneurship Development basket of the Eighth Semester list, beside BBA 432 and BBA 436. The BBA (Hons.) scheme has three Major Elective slots in Semester 8, so an entrepreneurship major can take all three papers of the basket. The scheme adds that electives run at the college or university's discretion.
What is the passing mark in BBA 434?
BBA 434 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term, as the GGSIPU BBA scheme states for all theory courses. The internal 40 splits into a 15-mark class test and 25 marks for assignments, presentations, viva or class participation. The BBA scheme PDF does not print a pass percentage, so check minimum end-term marks and re-appear rules in GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Which BBA 434 unit has the most numericals?
Unit 2, Valuation Methods for Startups. Its 8 pages carry 8 worked illustrations: comps, precedent transactions, DCF, discount-rate build-up, book versus liquidation value, the VC Method, the First Chicago Method and the probability-adjusted approach. Two of its ten-mark questions are numericals too, on the VC Method and DCF, and Unit 3 follows with 5 illustrations.
Which valuation methods does BBA 434 cover?
Seven, all compared in one table on page 18: comparable companies, precedent transactions, DCF, book and liquidation value, the Venture Capital Method, the First Chicago Method and the Risk-Adjusted Return Method. The table gives each one's basis, the startup stage it suits best and its key weakness, a ready frame for any "compare the methods" question.
Do the BBA 434 notes follow the 2024-25 NEP syllabus?
Yes. The notes are mapped to the revised NEP-based GGSIPU BBA scheme in force from academic session 2024-25, which lists BBA 434 under the Eighth Semester Entrepreneurship Development electives. The book's cover carries the same "w.e.f. 2024-25" label, and every official topic of the four units matches a section in the notes, as the syllabus map above shows.
