Bank loan appraisal and the 5 Cs of credit in MSME finance: excerpt from page 23 of the BBA 436 notes
Excerpt from page 23
Why commercial banks matter to MSMEs
Commercial banks are the largest source of credit for micro, small and medium units. RBI treats MSME loans as priority sector lending, so every bank must give a fixed share of its credit to priority sectors, with a separate sub-target for micro enterprises. Banks offer term loans, cash credit, overdraft, bill discounting, letters of credit and bank guarantees.
What loan appraisal means
Loan appraisal is the detailed check that a bank runs on a loan proposal before it says yes. The bank wants to know two things: is the project viable, and is the borrower creditworthy enough to repay with interest on time? The answer decides whether the loan is sanctioned, how much is given, at what rate of interest, and against what security.
The eight angles of appraisal
- Technical: technology, machinery, location, raw material, power, water and production capacity.
- Economic or market: demand, competition, pricing and growth prospects.
- Financial: project cost, means of finance, projected accounts and cash flows, plus ratios such as debt-equity, DSCR, break-even point, current ratio, IRR/NPV and payback.
- Managerial: the entrepreneur's qualification, experience, integrity and the organisation structure.
- Commercial: how inputs will be bought and output sold.
- Legal: registrations, licences and title to property.
- Environmental: pollution clearances and impact.
- Social benefit: jobs and regional growth, which carry weight for priority sector loans.
The 5 Cs of credit
| C | What the bank checks |
|---|---|
| Character | Honesty, reputation and repayment record, including the CIBIL score |
| Capacity | Ability to repay from business cash flows |
| Capital | The promoter's own contribution (margin money) |
| Collateral | Primary security (assets created) and collateral security (other property or a guarantee) |
| Conditions | Economic conditions, industry trends and the purpose of the loan |

How to write BBA 436 answers: institution notes, scheme answers and difference tables
Seven of the 30 long-answer questions in the notes ask for the role or functions of named bodies (SIDBI, NSIC, SISI, DICs, EDII, NIESBUD, NEDB), so marks go to students who keep the bodies apart.
For "role of" answers, follow the notes' frame: full form, year and level, then four to six functions, then one line on what it means for a small unit. The "Do Not Confuse" box on page 27 separates SIDCO (sheds and raw material), SIPCOT (industrial parks), SIDBI (the national MSME bank) and SISI (technical consultancy).
For "distinguish" questions, draw a table. Two common slips: mixing up the old, 2020 and 2025 MSME limits (all three are in the "Remember for Exam" box on page 5), and writing "SISI" without adding that it is now MSME-DI or MSME-DFO.
Worked example (short answer): What is MSME Samadhaan?
MSME Samadhaan is an online portal where a micro or small unit files a delayed-payment case before the Micro and Small Enterprises Facilitation Council under the MSMED Act. The buyer must pay within 45 days; otherwise compound interest at three times the bank rate is due.

BBA 436 MSME notes FAQs
How do I get the full BBA 436 notes?
Message us on WhatsApp at 9899436384 with the code BBA 436. The full notes come only as a printed book of 50 pages; they are not available as a PDF. Delivery takes a maximum of 5 to 7 days, and the exact time depends on your location.
Is BBA 436 compulsory for every BBA Semester 8 student?
No. BBA 436 is a Major Elective in the Entrepreneurship Development specialisation of the BBA (Hons.). Students pick three Semester 8 elective papers, and this basket offers BBA 432, BBA 434 and BBA 436. The scheme also says electives and specialisations run only at the discretion of the college or university, so check what your institute offers.
How many marks is BBA 436, and what is the passing mark?
BBA 436 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The internal 40 is a 15-mark class test plus 25 marks for at least two activities such as assignments, presentations, viva or class participation. The BBA scheme PDF does not print a pass percentage, so we do not quote one; end-term minimums and re-appear rules are in GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Which BBA 436 unit is the longest?
Unit 1 is the longest: 13 pages and 14 sections, from the MSME definition to women entrepreneurship, with 16 exam questions (8 long-answer, 8 short-answer). Unit 2 is shorter at 11 pages but has the most institution names to learn (DST, SIDCO, NSIC, IRCI, NIDC, SIDBI, SISI, SIPCOT), so give it extra revision time before the exam.
Do the BBA 436 notes use the latest MSME definition?
Yes. The BBA 436 notes give the limits in force from 1 April 2025: micro up to ₹2.5 crore investment and ₹10 crore turnover, rising to medium at ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore. They also list the pre-2020 and 2020 limits side by side, because questions often ask how the definition has changed since the MSMED Act 2006.
Is there a practical or lab paper with BBA 436?
No. BBA 436 is a 4-credit theory paper with four lecture hours a week (L-4, T-0) and no practical component in the BBA scheme. All four units are assessed through the 40-mark internal assessment and the 60-mark end-term exam, so the notes are written for exam answers and class tests, not for practical lab records.
