Resume, CV and bio-data in workplace communication: excerpt from page 46 of the BCA 141T notes
Excerpt from page 46
Resume
A resume (from the French résumé, meaning "summary") is a short, targeted summary of a candidate's education, skills, experience and achievements, written for one particular job. It usually runs to one or two pages and keeps only what is relevant to that job. Most private-sector and corporate employers ask for a resume.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
CV is Latin for "course of life". It is a detailed and complete record of a person's academic and professional life: education, research, publications, conferences, teaching, awards and memberships. A CV is longer than a resume, is arranged in time order and is not rewritten for each job. Academic, research, medical and international posts usually ask for a CV.
Bio-data
Bio-data (short for biographical data) puts personal details first: date of birth, gender, religion, marital status, father's name, nationality, address and hobbies, followed by education. It was once standard for government jobs and is still used in India for marriage proposals, but it is now considered outdated for corporate hiring.
Profile
A profile is a brief description of a person or organisation. In a job search it means either a three-to-four-line summary statement at the top of a resume, or an online professional profile on LinkedIn, Naukri or GitHub that recruiters search directly.
Note on employment letters
The same page reminds you that every official and employment letter, from the application letter to the resignation letter, uses the business letter format from Unit 2, and that the full block layout is today's standard choice.

Each paper in our GGSIPU notes gets the same topic-by-topic check; for BCA 141T it found no gaps in any of the four units.
How to write BCA 141T answers: format-first letters, memos and ten-mark theory answers
In C or IT, the examiner checks your logic. In BCA 141T, the examiner first checks whether your letter or memo looks right. The Unit 2 notes put it plainly: a correct format alone earns a good share of the marks. The notes give a method for each question type:
- Letters and memos: draw every part first, then write the body. A memo has To, From, Date and Subject, no salutation, no close.
- Bad news letters: never open with the refusal, never blame the reader, and use the words "buffer" and "indirect approach" in your answer.
- Principles: all 7 Cs with a one-line meaning each, plus a bad-versus-good example for at least three of them.
- Proposals and reports: list at least 10 proposal sections, start "types" with solicited versus unsolicited, and draw the report chapter flow.
- Comparisons: a six-to-seven-point table covers a five-mark part.
Worked example (Concreteness, Unit 1): "Our app is very fast" becomes "Our app loads the home screen in 1.2 seconds on a 4G connection."
A four-evening plan that follows the notes: Evening 1, Unit 2 formats (pages 16 to 32), since format alone earns marks. Evening 2, Unit 4 cover letter and resume (pages 48 to 50). Evening 3, Unit 3 synopsis and proposal structures. Evening 4, Unit 1 grammar tables and the 48 two-mark answers. Test the formats on GGSIPU BCA important questions.
BCA 141T exam corner: 48 two-mark answers and 22 ten-mark answer plans by unit

The BCA 141T notes answer 48 two-mark questions and give 22 ten-mark answer plans across 4 units, plus 19 model letters, memos and documents.
Four exam-style questions from the notes, one per unit, answered briefly:
- Unit 1: What is a complex sentence? One main clause plus at least one subordinate clause, joined by words like because, if or when.
- Unit 2: What is a buffer in a bad news letter? The neutral, pleasant opening (thanks or agreement) that comes before the reasons and the refusal.
- Unit 3: Expand IMRaD. Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion: the standard structure of a research paper.
- Unit 4: What is ATS? Applicant Tracking System: software that scans resumes for keywords before a recruiter reads them.
The other 44 two-mark answers and all 22 answer plans are in the full notes. More practice sits in the BCA 141T important questions.

BCA 141T and the GGSIPU BCA Sem 1 papers it connects to
BCA 141T has no paired lab: its place in the course is on the BCA course syllabus page.
Three same-semester papers connect to it:
- BCA 103T Fundamental of Information Technology: MS Word and PowerPoint, the tools for formatting your reports and synopses.
- BCA 105T Web Technologies: the web side of blog writing and SEO from Unit 4.
- BCA 101T Programming for Problem Solving using C: C projects get written up in the Unit 3 synopsis and report formats.
The other Semester 1 papers are BCA 107T Mathematical Foundation for Computer Science, BCA 191T Understanding India and BCA 181T Bridge Course in Mathematics. In Semester 2, BCA 142T Soft Skills builds on Unit 4 with interviews and presentations.
BCA 141T Writing Skills notes FAQs
Do the BCA 141T notes follow the scheme for the 2024-25 batch onwards?
Yes. The notes were checked against the BCA first-year syllabus that applies to the batch admitted in academic session 2024-25 onwards. All four official units of BCA 141T are covered, down to the last Unit IV topic, "other recent communication types", which the notes handle with channels like Slack, Teams and LinkedIn. The syllabus map above gives the page for every topic.
Which BCA 141T unit has the most letter and memo formats?
Unit 2, Business Correspondence and Report Writing, has ten solved formats: a note-making example, a notice, an e-mail, an order letter, a sales letter, a complaint letter, a memo, a good news letter, a bad news letter and a short formal report. Unit 4 comes next with seven, including a cover letter, a fresher resume and two job e-mails.
Are the BCA 141T ten-mark answers written out in full?
The 22 ten-mark questions in the BCA 141T notes come with answer plans, not full essays. Each plan tells you which definition, table, diagram and specimen from that unit to use and in what order, so you build the answer from the notes themselves. The 48 two-mark questions are answered in full, in short answers of a few lines each, ready to learn.
Does the BCA 141T exam ask you to write letters and resumes?
The syllabus prints only the question pattern, not the questions, so we do not claim which documents will appear. The BCA 141T notes give the format and a full specimen for every document the syllabus names, from notices and memos to a cover letter with resume, so you are ready if a writing task comes up.
What is the passing mark for BCA 141T?
BCA 141T is marked out of 100, and the BCA scheme of examination lists all 100 marks as internal, with no external marks. The scheme does not print a separate pass mark against BCA 141T, so we do not quote one. For pass rules, grace and re-appear, check GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in or ask your institute's exam cell.
