One exam-style question per unit from the notes:
- Unit 1 (2 Marks): Differentiate between knowledge and skill. Pointer: knowing (study) versus doing (practice).
- Unit 2 (2 Marks): What is paralanguage? Pointer: how something is said: tone, pitch, pace, pauses.
- Unit 3 (10 Marks): Suggest guidelines for successful interview preparation and execution. Pointer: before-during-after diagram, then preparation, execution and follow-up points.
- Unit 4 (2 Marks): Differentiate between eustress and distress. Pointer: motivating stress versus harmful stress.
More practice sits in the BCA 142T important questions.
Eight communication barriers and misinterpretation in workplace communication: excerpt from page 22 of the BCA 142T notes
Excerpt from page 22 (Unit 2, section 6: Identifying Barriers and Misinterpretations)
Communication barriers are the obstacles that stop a message from being received or understood the way the sender meant it. They cause misinterpretation, where the receiver gives the message a different meaning. A barrier can appear at any stage: the sender, encoding, the channel, decoding or the receiver.
The eight types of barrier
Physical barriers come from noise, distance, poor lighting, faulty equipment or a weak network, such as a client who cannot hear you on a video call. Semantic or language barriers come from jargon and words with many meanings: telling a client "the API threw a 500" instead of "the server had an error". Psychological barriers include anger, fear, stress and prejudice; an angry employee may ignore correct advice from a manager.
Organisational barriers are too many levels of hierarchy, rigid rules and information overload, so a message that passes through five levels gets distorted. Cultural barriers arise because a gesture polite in one country can be rude in another. Personal barriers include ego, poor listening and distrust, like a senior who never listens to juniors' ideas.
Perceptual barriers exist because people see the same thing differently: one person reads a deadline as "urgent" and another as "flexible". Technological barriers come from software failures, unfamiliar tools and message overload, such as an important email lost among 200 unread ones.
Common causes of misinterpretation
- Assumptions: the receiver fills gaps with guesses.
- Selective perception: people hear what they want to hear.
- Filtering: information is changed or held back as it moves up or down.
- Ambiguous words: "Send it soon" can mean one hour to one person and one week to another.
- Missing tone: texts and emails lose tone, so a short reply can look rude.
- Mixed signals: the words say one thing and the body language another.
Where the fix begins
The first strategy in the notes is to plan the message: be clear about its purpose, audience and key points before you speak or write. The second is simple language: avoid jargon with non-technical people and explain terms when you must use them.

The 2026-27 edition of the BCA 142T notes follows the 2024-25 BCA scheme, which places the paper in Semester 2. It was last updated on 12 October 2026. How we check facts is set out in our editorial policy.

BCA 142T and the GGSIPU BCA Sem 2 papers it connects to
BCA 142T has no lab of its own; the full list of Semester 2 papers and their units is on the GGSIPU BCA syllabus page.
Its Semester 2 siblings are BCA 102T Database Management System (DBMS), BCA 104T Object Oriented Programming using Java, BCA 106T Data Structures and Algorithms, BCA 108T Software Engineering, BCA 192T Environment Studies, and the labs BCA 102P, BCA 104P, BCA 106P and BCA 108P.
- Unit 2 active listening → BCA 108T Unit I requirement elicitation (FAST), which depends on hearing the client correctly.
- Unit 2 negotiation and Unit 4 time management → BCA 108T Unit II project planning and risk.
How to write BCA 142T answers: two-mark definitions with an example and ten-mark answers built on a diagram, a table and a named thinker
BCA 142T answers lose marks when they read like general advice. The notes train one habit: name the concept, its thinker or source, and a workplace example.
Two-mark answers. Write a one-line definition, then one example or one difference. The Unit 1 answer to "What is attitude?" gives a definition, then a student who enjoys learning new tools.
Ten-mark answers. The notes' exam tips ask for at least one diagram and one table in every ten-mark answer. Unit 3 adds a dos-and-don'ts table or slide plan to show application. Unit 4 adds the thinker's name and year.
Worked example: "What is active listening? Discuss its process, techniques and importance."
- Hearing-versus-listening table.
- Definition, credited to Rogers and Farson (1957).
- Draw Fig 2.5: receive, understand, remember, evaluate, respond.
- Eight techniques, including paraphrasing.
- Seven points of importance, then barriers in one line.

BCA 142T Soft Skills study notes FAQs
How do I get the full BCA 142T notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" at the top or the WhatsApp button at the end. Your message carries the BCA 142T code, so our GGSIPU desk knows which notes you want. The full notes come as a printed book only, not as a PDF, covering all four units with 30 numbered diagrams, 48 two-mark answers and 24 ten-mark outlines.
Is BCA 142T a Semester 1 or Semester 2 paper?
BCA 142T is a Semester 2 paper. The BCA scheme of examination for the batch admitted in 2024-25 lists Soft Skills in Table 7, the second-semester table, as its Ability Enhancement Course with 3 credits. Writing Skills (BCA 141T) is the AEC of Semester 1. If a notes cover says Semester 1, follow the scheme.
How is BCA 142T marked, and what is the passing mark?
BCA 142T is marked out of 100, and the scheme gives all 100 marks to internal assessment, with no external marks listed. The scheme prints no separate pass percentage for this paper, so none is stated here. For minimum marks, grading and re-appear rules, refer to GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in, which the BCA scheme cites.
Is BCA 142T an NUES paper?
The scheme does not mark BCA 142T as NUES; it lists it as an AEC with 3 credits and 100 internal marks. The first-year syllabus still prints paper-setter instructions for a 60-mark paper: ten two-mark questions, then one ten-mark question per unit. Because the two documents differ, ask your college how the paper is set before you plan revision.
Which BCA 142T unit is the heaviest in the notes?
Unit 4, Personal and Wellness Skills, is the longest at pages 44-58. It has 9 numbered diagrams, 3 worked examples and a 12-row table of thinkers, from Maslow (1943) to Goleman (1995) and Cirillo's Pomodoro. Unit 2 follows with 8 diagrams. Every unit of BCA 142T carries the same exam load: 12 two-mark answers and 6 ten-mark answer outlines.
Do the BCA 142T notes follow the 2024-25 BCA scheme?
Yes. The BCA 142T notes follow the first-year syllabus applicable to the batch admitted in 2024-25 onwards, approved by the Academic Council on 20 December 2023. Every official topic in the four units maps to a section and page in the notes, as the syllabus map table on this page shows. Older batches should check their own syllabus first.
