Ethos of Vedanta and Karma Yoga at work in human values and ethics: excerpt from page 39 of the BCA 291T notes
Excerpt from page 39
Indian ethos puts self-management first: a person who can manage himself can manage others. It focuses on duties (dharma) more than rights, prefers cooperation to competition, and treats business as a way of serving society. Mahatma Gandhi called this trusteeship: the rich should treat their wealth as held in trust for society. The Tata Group is a well-known Indian example, as a large part of Tata Sons is owned by the Tata Trusts, which use the income for charity.
What Vedanta means
Vedanta literally means "the end (essence) of the Vedas". It refers mainly to the philosophy of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras, and it deals with three questions: Who am I? What is the purpose of life? How is everything connected?
Basic concepts of Vedanta
- Brahman: the ultimate reality, the universal consciousness present in everything.
- Atman: the real Self in every being, pure consciousness.
- Atman = Brahman: the individual Self and the universal Self are one ("Tat tvam asi", that thou art; "Aham Brahmasmi", I am Brahman).
- Oneness (Advaita): everything is connected; diversity is on the surface, unity is underneath.
- Maya: the ignorance that makes us see separation and chase temporary things.
- Karma: every action has a result; right action leads to growth.
- Moksha: liberation, meaning freedom from ignorance, greed and fear.
Four paths (yogas)
Vedanta describes four paths: Karma Yoga (selfless action), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Gyana Yoga (knowledge) and Raja Yoga (meditation and control of the mind). For management, Karma Yoga is the most relevant: do your duty with full dedication and skill, without being attached to personal gain. It reduces stress, ego and greed, and increases quality and commitment.
Three gunas
Indian thought, especially the Gita, explains human nature through three gunas (qualities). Every person has all three in different proportions, and a good manager tries to increase sattva.

How to write BCA 291T answers: definition-first short answers, diagram-led long answers and five-step case solutions
The notes tie every answer to a definition, a diagram or a value named in TB1, so it never reads as plain opinion.
Short answers: one-line definition, then one distinguishing point. Memory tricks help: URNAH for the guidelines of value education, EHJPE for the five dimensions of human order.
Long answers: the page 13 tip sets the pattern of definition, diagram (Fig 1.4, 1.5 or 1.6), headed points, one real example and a short conclusion. Unit 2 answers lean on Fig 2.2, 2.5 and 2.7; Unit 4 answers quote one Sanskrit line with its meaning.
Case answers: Unit 3 uses issue, value violated, right action; Fig 4.3 expands this into five steps.
Worked example: a vendor offers an employee a bribe
- Facts: money offered to win a purchase order.
- Issue: personal gain against the organisation's interest.
- Values: integrity, swadhan (rightful wealth), loyalty.
- Options: accept quietly, refuse, or refuse and report.
- Decision: refuse politely and inform the ethics officer, since hidden gain breaks trust, the foundational value from Unit 2.

BCA 291T Human Values notes FAQs
Is BCA 291T an NUES paper, and who assesses it?
Yes. The BCA scheme lists BCA 291T Human Values and Ethics as a Value Added Course marked NUES, a Non-University Examination Subject. Only your institute assesses it, through teachers' continuous assessment, and the university holds no separate paper. The notes still give 41 solved short answers and 24 long-answer questions, because internal tests and assignments draw on the same four units.
How many marks is BCA 291T out of, and what is the pass mark?
BCA 291T is marked out of 100, and all 100 marks are internal: the scheme gives 100 internal and 0 external. The scheme of examination does not print a separate pass percentage for this paper. It states that grading follows Ordinance 11 of the University, so check Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in, or ask your institute, for minimum marks and re-appear rules.
Do the BCA 291T notes cover all four official units?
Yes. We matched every topic in the official BCA 291T syllabus against the notes and found no gap. Unit 3 covers all four workplace issues the syllabus names: cybercrime, plagiarism, sexual misconduct and fraudulent use of institutional resources. Unit 4 includes the case studies and role-playing exercises the syllabus asks for, with 4 solved cases and 5 role-play scenarios.
Which BCA 291T unit needs the most study time?
Unit II, Harmony at Various Levels, gets 8 of the 24 teaching hours in the official syllabus, more than any other unit. In the notes it also has the most figures (7) and the most solved short answers (11). Give extra time to the nine values in relationships, the five dimensions of human order and the four orders of nature.
Do the BCA 291T notes include case studies for Unit 4?
Yes. Unit 4 has 4 solved case studies: a hidden security bug, copied code in a college project, dumping e-waste for profit, and favouritism in a team. Each names the ethical issue, the values involved and the right action. The unit adds 5 role-play scenarios and a five-step method (facts, issue, values, options, decision) for any new case.
