BCA 234 Health and Wellness, Yoga Education and Sports & Fitness Notes unit-wise: 72 solved practice questions and 13 asanas across 4 units
BCA 234 Unit 1: Health vs Fitness, Nutrition and Lifestyle Disorders
Pages 3-17. Unit 1 opens with the WHO 1948 health definition and six dimensions of health. Nutrition follows: the food pyramid with the NIN-ICMR "My Plate", four lifestyle disorders (diabetes, obesity, PCOS, metabolic syndrome), BMI with Asian cut-offs, TDEE, macro and micro nutrients, and quantified nutrition. 14 tables, 7 figures, 18 solved questions.
Quick look: the three states of energy balance (from page 10)
| State | Energy in vs out | Effect on weight |
|---|---|---|
| Calorie deficit | In < Out | Weight loss from stored fat |
| Maintenance | In = Out (about TDEE) | Weight stays stable |
| Calorie surplus | In > Out | Gain: muscle with training, fat without it |

BCA 234 Unit 2: Introduction to Exercise and its Science
Pages 18-30. Unit 2 defines exercise as planned, structured and repetitive activity, then explains the three energy systems (ATP-PC, anaerobic glycolysis, aerobic), five types of exercise and isotonic, isometric and isokinetic contraction. It adds 11 fitness components with tests, FITT-VP, 7 training principles and the WHO 2020 guidelines. 13 tables, 7 figures, 18 solved questions.
Quick look: heart-rate zones for a 20-year-old student (from page 24)
- Maximum heart rate = 220 - 20 = 200 beats per minute.
- Moderate zone = 64-76% of 200 = 128-152 beats per minute.
- Vigorous zone = 77-95% of 200 = 154-190 beats per minute.
- So a brisk walk or easy jog should keep the heart near 130-150.
BCA 234 Unit 3: Resistance Training and Basic Muscle Groups
Pages 31-42. Unit 3 explains resistance training, its four sources of load (body weight, free weights, machines, bands) and terms like rep, set, 1-RM and progressive overload. It explains hypertrophy, busts five gym myths and maps the muscle groups: deltoids, pectorals, lats, trapezius, biceps, triceps and the four leg groups. It closes with a 7-exercise beginner plan and 18 solved questions.

The BCA 234 notes solve 48 two-mark and 24 ten-mark practice questions across 4 units, plus 5 worked calculations.
One question per unit, with the answer's direction:
- Unit 1: What is metabolic syndrome? A cluster of any 3 of 5 risk factors (waist, triglycerides, low HDL, BP, fasting sugar) that raises heart disease and diabetes risk.
- Unit 2: Differentiate isotonic and isometric exercise. Isotonic moves the joint (squat, curl); isometric holds still with no change in muscle length (plank, wall sit).
- Unit 3: What is an antagonistic pair? Two muscles that work opposite each other, like biceps and triceps, or quadriceps and hamstrings.
- Unit 4: When should Kapalbhati be avoided? In high BP, heart disease, pregnancy, hernia, epilepsy and during menstruation.
Paper-wise practice sets are planned in the BCA 234 important questions.

This 2026-27 edition of the Health and Wellness notes in English is mapped to the BCA scheme for the batch admitted in 2024-25 onwards. It draws on the WHO 2020 activity guidelines, Asian BMI cut-offs and the NIN-ICMR "My Plate", and carries safety notes in every unit. Last updated 13 October 2026. The same team prepares GGSIPU important questions for every course.
How to write BCA 234 answers: definition, table and labelled diagram answers for internal tests
BCA 234 answers reward structure more than length. The BCA 234 Health and Wellness IPU notes give a fixed chain for a long lifestyle-disorder answer: meaning, causes, symptoms, then prevention through diet, exercise and yoga, finished with a comparison table.
For a two-mark answer, give one exact definition and one example. "Physical activity is any body movement by skeletal muscles that uses energy; exercise is planned and structured activity done for fitness, such as jogging 30 minutes daily" covers both marks in two lines.
For a ten-mark answer, add a numbered figure or table from the notes. A question on fitness components should carry the health-related versus skill-related figure (Fig 2.4) and both tables, plus the memory tricks "C-S-E-F-B" and "A Big Cat Plays Real Sport".
Worked example (Unit 1): "A student weighs 72 kg and is 1.70 m tall." Write the formula BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)², then 72 ÷ 2.89 = 24.9. State both results: normal by the WHO range, overweight by the Indian cut-off of 23-24.9.
Avoid two slips the notes flag: crunches do not burn belly fat (no spot reduction), and Kapalbhati always needs its precautions. Practise this format across subjects on GGSIPU BCA important questions.
BCA 234 and the GGSIPU BCA Sem 4 papers it connects to
BCA 234 has no lab paper; where it fits among all six semesters is shown in the GGSIPU BCA syllabus.
Its Semester 4 neighbours are BCA 202T Operating Systems, BCA 204T Software Testing, their labs BCA 202P and BCA 204P, BCA 232 Introduction to Logic & Critical Thinking, one programme elective pair (BCA 212, 216, 218 or 220) and one GE-2 paper such as BCA 222T Digital Marketing or BCA 224T Principles of Accounting.
Like BCA 232, it is marked on 100 internal marks only. Unit 3's rear-deltoid and pulling work and Unit 4's posture case for yoga target the neck and back strain of long lab sessions in BCA 202P and BCA 204P.
How the body makes energy during exercise: excerpt from page 20 of the BCA 234 notes
Excerpt from page 20
Why muscles need ATP
A muscle can contract only by spending a high-energy molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The body keeps just a small store of it, so it has to remake ATP all the time. It does this through three energy systems, and which one leads depends on how hard and how long you exercise.
The three energy systems
| System | Fuel | Oxygen? | Leads for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATP-PC (phosphagen) | Stored ATP + creatine phosphate | No | 0-10 seconds | 100 m sprint, heavy lift, jump |
| Anaerobic glycolysis | Glucose / glycogen | No | 10 seconds-2 minutes | 400 m run, fast set of 12-15 reps |
| Aerobic (oxidative) | Carbohydrates + fats | Yes | More than 2 minutes | Jogging, cycling, swimming |

The systems never switch off one by one. They work together, and the main supplier shifts as the activity gets longer: ATP-PC for the first few seconds, glycolysis up to about two minutes, then the aerobic system for anything longer.
The burning feeling and next-day soreness
The burn you feel in a fast, hard set comes from by-products of anaerobic glycolysis, and it fades within minutes of rest. The old belief that lactic acid causes the next-day ache is wrong. That soreness is DOMS, the result of tiny muscle micro-damage and its repair.
What one session does vs what weeks of training do
During a single session the heart and breathing rate rise, blood flow to working muscles increases, body temperature climbs and sweating starts, and blood pressure goes up. After weeks of regular training the picture flips: resting heart rate falls, muscles grow more capillaries and store more glycogen, resting blood pressure drops, and muscles and bones get stronger.
Do the BCA 234 notes cover the full GGSIPU syllabus?
Coverage of the official unit topics is not confirmed yet: the BCA scheme PDF on ipu.ac.in lists BCA 234's credits and marks but does not print its unit-wise syllabus. The official-topics column will be filled once the second-year syllabus PDF is checked.
| Unit | Official topics | Where in the notes | Status |
|---|
Credits, category and marks come from the official BCA Scheme of Examination and Syllabi, w.e.f. 2024-25. Every paper in GGSIPU notes is mapped to its official PDF in the same way.
BCA 234 Health and Wellness notes FAQs
Is there an end-term exam for BCA 234?
No. The GGSIPU BCA scheme marks BCA 234 as a NUES paper, so the institute assesses all 100 marks itself through teacher's continuous assessment. The scheme shows no external marks, so there is no university end-term exam for this paper. Your college sets the internal format, which may mix class tests, practical yoga or fitness work, assignments and a viva.
What is the passing mark in BCA 234?
BCA 234 is marked out of 100, all internal, with no end-term component. The Semester 4 table in the official scheme does not print a separate pass percentage for this paper, so we do not quote one. Evaluation and result rules sit in GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in, and your institute confirms how it applies them to NUES papers.
How many credits does BCA 234 carry?
BCA 234 carries 2 credits. The GGSIPU BCA scheme lists it as the Skill Enhancement Course of Semester 4, with no lecture hours and 4 tutorial or practical hours a week. Those 2 credits count towards the 23 credits of Semester 4 and towards the 8 SEC credits a student needs for the three-year BCA degree.
Which BCA 234 unit has the most content?
Unit 4 is the longest at 16 pages (pages 43-58). It combines seven training variables, sample plans for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and the whole yoga section: Patanjali's eight limbs, Surya Namaskar's 12 steps, 13 asanas with steps and precautions, and 4 pranayama and relaxation practices. Unit 1 follows at 15 pages, with nutrition and four lifestyle disorders.
Do the BCA 234 notes replace medical advice?
No. The BCA 234 notes are study material for the paper, not a treatment plan. They carry safety notes in every unit and say yoga should support, not replace, medical care. Anyone with diabetes, PCOS, high BP, heart disease, joint problems or pregnancy should start a new diet, exercise or yoga routine only with a doctor's or qualified trainer's advice.
