BCA 306T Software Project Management Notes unit-wise: 5 solved numericals, 32 two-mark answers and 17 diagrams across 4 units
The official unit titles match the notes word for word. Notes for every other BCA paper sit under GGSIPU BCA notes; the sample PDF at the top shows one page per unit.
BCA 306T Unit 1: Introduction to Software Project Management
Pages 3 to 14, 8 topic sections. It separates a project from operations, explains the triple constraint and the ten PMBOK knowledge areas, and compares the project life cycle, product life cycle and SDLC, ending with the power/interest grid and TELOS feasibility. Count: 1 solved numerical, 8 two-mark answers, 7 ten-mark questions, 4 figures.
Quick look: payback, ROI and NPV for a ₹1,00,000 project (from page 13)
- Net benefits: ₹30,000, ₹40,000, ₹40,000, ₹30,000; discount rate 10%.
- Payback: ₹70,000 back after Year 2, the last ₹30,000 takes 30/40 of Year 3, so 2.75 years.
- ROI: ₹10,000 average annual profit ÷ ₹1,00,000 × 100 = 10% a year.
- NPV: ₹1,10,874 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹10,874, positive, so economically feasible.
BCA 306T Unit 2: Project Planning and Estimation
Pages 15 to 28, 9 topic sections. The numerical unit: project charter, scope creep, a WBS of an online exam portal, COCOMO, Function Point Analysis, a Gantt chart and a PERT network, then resource levelling, a sample budget and milestones. Count: 3 solved numericals, 8 two-mark answers, 8 ten-mark questions, 3 figures.

Pages 29 to 40, 9 topic sections. It compares Waterfall with Agile and Scrum, then covers team structures, Earned Value Management, SQA with CMMI levels, testing levels, risk exposure, change control and configuration management. Count: 1 solved numerical, 8 two-mark answers, 8 ten-mark questions, 6 figures (the most of any unit).
Quick look: reading an EVM status at Month 4 (from page 34)

BCA 306T Unit 4: Project Communication and Maintenance
Pages 41 to 51, 10 topic sections, the most of any unit. It runs from the communication model and push, pull and interactive methods to the engagement matrix, conflict resolution, report types, status meetings, closure and customer relationships, ending with three real project failures. Count: 8 two-mark answers, 8 ten-mark questions, 4 figures.

Corrective, adaptive, perfective and preventive maintenance in software projects: excerpt from page 46 of the BCA 306T notes
Excerpt from page 46
Software maintenance is the modification of a software product after delivery to correct faults, improve performance or other attributes, or adapt the product to a changed environment (IEEE 1219). Maintenance usually consumes 60 to 80% of the total life-cycle cost of software.
Types of maintenance
- Corrective: remove defects found after release, for example a result page that shows the wrong grade for some students (about 20%).
- Adaptive: adapt to a changed environment, for example updating an app for a new Android version or a GST rule change (about 25%).
- Perfective: add features or improve performance and usability, for example a PDF marksheet download or faster search (about 50%).
- Preventive: improve maintainability and avoid future failures, for example refactoring code and updating documentation (about 5%).
The shares come from the classic Lientz and Swanson study and vary between projects. The point to remember is that most maintenance is perfective and adaptive, not bug-fixing.
Maintenance process
A change request comes in from a user, the team analyses its impact and cost, designers and coders modify the system, testers run regression tests, and the release goes out with updated documents.
Problems in software maintenance
- Poor or outdated documentation, so maintainers cannot understand the code.
- The original developers have left and their knowledge is lost.
- Code degrades with every change (software ageing) and old technology becomes a legacy system.
- Maintenance is seen as less attractive work, so less skilled staff may be assigned.
- Changes can introduce new bugs (the ripple effect) when regression testing is weak.
Maintenance effort (Boehm)
Annual Maintenance Effort is AME = ACT × SDE, where ACT is the Annual Change Traffic (the fraction of code changed each year) and SDE is the Software Development Effort in person-months. If SDE is 600 person-months and 15% of the code changes every year, AME = 0.15 × 600 = 90 person-months a year.
Related terms are re-engineering (restructuring old software so it is easier to maintain), reverse engineering (recovering the design from the code) and legacy system migration.

How to write BCA 306T answers: COCOMO, PERT and EVM numericals plus ten-mark comparison answers
BCA 306T answers are either numericals (Units 2 and 3) or theory built on a diagram plus a comparison table; the exam tips in the notes give a layout for each.
Numericals. The tip on page 20 says: write the formula, then the constants for the given mode (a, b, c, d for COCOMO), then the answer with its unit, such as person-months or persons. Steps carry marks even if the final figure slips.
Comparisons. For Waterfall versus Agile, draw both diagrams (Fig 3.1 and Fig 3.2) and give at least eight points in a table.
Process answers. For status meetings, page 45 suggests a meeting-types table, then before, during and after guidelines, then a line on minutes of meeting.
Worked example in this format: defect removal efficiency (page 39)
- Formula:
DRE = E ÷ (E + D) × 100(E = errors before delivery, D = defects after delivery). - Values: E = 90, D = 10, so DRE = 90 ÷ 100 × 100 = 90%.
Watch for the common SPI/CPI mix-up; below 1 is the bad side. Practise on GGSIPU BCA important questions.

BCA 306T SPM notes FAQs
How do I get the full BCA 306T notes?
The full BCA 306T notes come only as a printed book; they are not sold as a PDF. Message Unnati Educations on WhatsApp at 9899436384 with the paper code, and the team shares the order and delivery details there. Before ordering, open the watermarked sample PDF at the top to check the layout and diagrams.
What is the passing mark for BCA 306T?
BCA 306T is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term, as printed in the Sixth Semester evaluation table. The scheme PDF we checked does not print a general pass percentage for theory papers, so we do not quote one. End-term minimums, grading and re-appear rules come from GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in, or ask your college examination cell.
Which unit of BCA 306T has the most numericals?
Unit 2 of BCA 306T, Project Planning and Estimation, has the most numericals. It holds 3 of the 5 solved examples in the notes: Basic COCOMO for 32 KLOC, function points for an average-complexity system, and a seven-activity PERT network with critical path and probability. It also works an Intermediate COCOMO example and a sample budget of ₹10,89,000.
Do the BCA 306T notes follow the 2024-25 batch syllabus?
Yes. The BCA 306T notes follow the BCA scheme for students admitted in 2024-25 onwards, whose third- and fourth-year syllabus was approved in August 2026. All four unit titles and every listed topic match the official PDF, in the same order. If your college copy differs, compare its unit list with the syllabus map above.
How is BCA 306T different from BCA 306P?
BCA 306T is the 4-credit theory paper with a written end-term exam, while BCA 306P is the 1-credit practical with 2 lab hours a week. Both carry 100 marks split 40 internal and 60 external. The syllabus gives 306P the same course outcomes as 306T and leaves its practical list to your teacher in the first week.
Do the BCA 306T notes include case studies?
Yes. Section 10 of Unit 4 in the BCA 306T notes summarises three real projects: the Denver airport baggage system, the London Ambulance dispatch system and the HealthCare.gov launch, each with its project management lessons. It then analyses a sample college online exam portal case that links ideas from all four units, which suits a ten-mark case-study question.
