How a payment gateway works in e-commerce: excerpt from page 56 of the BCA 401T notes
Excerpt from page 56
What a payment gateway is
A payment gateway is a technology service that authorises and processes online payments between the customer, the merchant and the banks. Think of it as the online version of the card machine at a shop counter: it securely captures the customer's payment details, encrypts them, sends them for authorisation and returns the result to the merchant's site.
Examples include Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, CCAvenue, Paytm Payment Gateway, BillDesk, Stripe and PayPal.
How one online payment moves, step by step
- Order placed: the customer clicks "Pay" and picks card, UPI, net banking or a wallet.
- Encryption: the browser sends the payment data to the gateway over an encrypted SSL/TLS connection.
- Forwarding: the gateway passes the request to the acquiring bank or processor.
- Routing: the request travels through the card network (Visa, Mastercard, RuPay), or through NPCI for UPI, to the issuing bank.
- Authorisation: the issuing bank verifies the customer with an OTP or UPI PIN, checks the balance or credit limit and its fraud rules, then approves or declines.
- Response: the result returns to the gateway, which informs the merchant's site, and the customer sees "Payment Successful".
- Settlement: later, usually on T+1 or T+2, funds move from the issuer to the acquirer and reach the merchant's account after the MDR or gateway fee is deducted.
Gateway, aggregator and processor are different things
A payment gateway only captures, encrypts and transmits payment data; it does not hold the money. A payment aggregator collects payments for many merchants into its own nodal or escrow account and then settles with them, which is why it needs an RBI licence. Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree work as both aggregator and gateway.
A payment processor handles the actual communication and transaction processing between the banks and the card networks. In a long answer, draw the seven steps as a left-to-right flow first; the notes show it as Figure 7.1 on this page.

How to write BCA 401T answers: diagram-led long answers and two-column short differences
BCA 401T rewards structure over length. A 2.5-mark answer needs a definition plus one Indian example or difference. The habits below come from the notes' exam tip boxes.
- Make "differentiate" a table: e-commerce vs e-business (with the two-circle diagram, page 10), Internet vs Web, spoofing vs sniffing.
- Group long answers: advantages for organisations, consumers and society, then technical and non-technical limits (page 13).
- Draw first: a left-to-right flow for gateway, card and encryption answers.
- Use hooks: I-N-A-C-P-A for security dimensions (page 62), HTTPS = HTTP + TLS (page 72).
Worked example (2.5 Marks): Differentiate between spoofing and sniffing.
| Basis | Spoofing | Sniffing |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Pretending to be someone else | Secretly listening to network traffic |
| Nature and example | Active; fake bank website | Passive; passwords on public Wi-Fi |
| Threat to | Authenticity and integrity | Confidentiality and privacy |

How do I get the full BCA 401T notes?
Tap Get Full Notes to message 9899436384 on WhatsApp with your postal address and PIN code. The full BCA 401T notes come only as a 78-page printed book, not as a PDF. The team confirms price and delivery to your address in the chat. Open the sample PDF first to check the layout, diagrams and writing style.
Is BCA 401T E-Commerce a Semester 6 or Semester 7 paper?
Semester 7. Table 12 of the official BCA scheme for the batch admitted in 2024-25 onwards places BCA 401T in the seventh semester, alongside BCA 403T Internet of Things (IOT), both labs, BCA 405 and BCA 461. Semester 7 is the fourth year of the four-year BCA programme, so treat any Semester 6 listing as outdated.
What is the passing mark for BCA 401T?
BCA 401T is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term. The 2024-25 BCA scheme does not print a pass percentage for this paper, so we do not quote one. End-term minimums, pass and re-appear rules come from GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in, which the scheme follows for grading. Your examination branch can confirm the details.
How is the BCA 401T end-term paper set?
Question 1 is compulsory: 10 short questions of 2.5 marks each, at least 2 from each unit. Each of the four units then has two questions of 12.5 marks, and you may be asked to attempt one per unit. That adds up to 75 (25 + 50), while the scheme lists 60 end-term marks, so confirm the scaling with your institute.
Which BCA 401T unit has the most diagrams in the notes?
Unit IV has 15 of the 47 labelled figures in the BCA 401T notes: security layers, vulnerable points, a DDoS attack, secret and public key encryption, the digital signature, PKI, the SSL/TLS handshake, VPN, firewall and proxy server. Units II and III have 11 each and Unit I has 10, mostly flows and classification charts.
Do the BCA 401T notes match the 2024-25 batch syllabus?
Yes. We checked every topic in the four units of the official BCA scheme and syllabus for the 2024-25 batch, uploaded on ipu.ac.in on 3 September 2026. Each topic, from social commerce in Unit I to intrusion detection in Unit IV, has its own section with a page number; the syllabus map above lists them all.
