RFID components, working and tag types in IoT hardware: excerpt from page 28 of the BCA 403T notes

Excerpt from page 28

Components of an RFID system

An RFID system has four parts. The tag (transponder) is a microchip that stores an ID or data, joined to an antenna and packed into a label, card, sticker or capsule fixed on the object. The reader (interrogator) sends a radio signal, receives the reply and decodes it; it can be fixed at a gate or toll plaza, or handheld.

The reader's antenna radiates the signal and picks up the tag's response. Finally, middleware or a host computer filters raw reads and passes them to the database and business application, such as inventory or billing.

How RFID works, step by step

  1. The reader keeps sending radio waves through its antenna, creating an electromagnetic field called the interrogation zone.
  2. When a tag enters the field, a passive tag draws energy from it to power its chip, through inductive or backscatter coupling.
  3. The tag sends its unique ID back by modulating the signal (backscatter).
  4. The reader decodes the signal and hands the data to the middleware.
  5. The application looks up the ID in the database and acts: it opens a gate, deducts a toll or updates stock.

Tags can also be read-only (ID fixed at the factory), WORM (write once, read many) or read/write. The page ends with the first RFID band: low frequency at 125 to 134 kHz, read up to about 10 cm, used for animal tagging, access cards and car immobilisers.

How to write BCA 403T answers: layer diagrams, comparison tables and short Arduino sketches

BCA 403T answers score on structure more than length. Q1 has ten 2.5-mark parts, so each short answer needs a definition, one named example and, where it fits, a two-point comparison. For "Define IoT", the notes suggest the ITU-T definition, the formula (things + sensors and actuators + connectivity + cloud + analytics + applications) and an example such as a street light that switches on by itself at dusk.

The 12.5-mark questions reward diagrams. For architecture, draw the 5-layer stack, give each layer three or four lines with an example, then add ITU-T's management and security capabilities. In Unit 2, name real parts (LM35, DHT11, PIR, MQ-2) instead of "a sensor". For routing, draw the classification tree, explain LEACH with its data-flow figure and add RPL's DIO, DIS and DAO.

Code questions in Units 3 and 4 need only the skeleton, not a full sketch: include the libraries, connect Wi-Fi in setup(), read the sensor and send it to ThingSpeak or an MQTT broker in loop(), and explain each block in a line.

Worked example: "Design a smart street lighting system for a smart city" (12.5 Marks)

  1. Objectives: on at dusk, off at dawn, dim to about 30% on an empty road, report faults.
  2. Architecture: pole (LED, LDR, PIR, ACS712 current sensor, microcontroller) to LoRaWAN or ZigBee, cloud and city dashboard.
  3. Working: read LDR, check motion, set 100% or 30%, flag a fault when the lamp is on but current is near zero.
  4. Code and close: analogWrite(LAMP_PIN, level) prototype, then a benefits and challenges table.

Common slip: one diagram and stop. The tip on page 72 asks for at least two, architecture and control flow. Practise this format on GGSIPU BCA important questions.

BCA 403T and the GGSIPU BCA Sem 7 papers it connects to

BCA 403P Internet of Things (IOT) Lab has no fixed practical list; the teacher notifies it in week one. See the GGSIPU BCA syllabus.

Unit 3 programs 1 to 6 (pages 50 to 55) match typical lab tasks; Unit 4 adds three more.

Other Semester 7 papers: BCA 401T E-Commerce, BCA 401P E-Commerce Lab, BCA 405 Major Project-1 and BCA 461 Vocational Course (NUES). An IoT topic for BCA 405 can start from the Unit 4 street light design.

BCA 403T IoT notes FAQs

How do I get the full BCA 403T notes?

The full BCA 403T notes come only as a printed book; they are not sold as a PDF. Tap "Get Full Notes" or the WhatsApp button at the end of this page and send the pre-filled message. The GGSIPU desk on 9899436384 shares the price, payment options and delivery details with you in the same chat.

What is the passing mark for BCA 403T?

BCA 403T is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term, as per the BCA scheme. The scheme does not print a pass percentage for this paper, so we do not quote one. Minimum end-term marks and re-appear rules come from the university's Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in; check it or ask your exam cell.

Do the BCA 403T notes include Arduino programs?

Yes, the BCA 403T notes include 9 programs. Unit 3 has six: Blink, an LDR street light, DHT11 temperature and humidity, a servo sweep, ThingSpeak upload on ESP32 and LED control over MQTT. Unit 4 has three: Bluetooth relay control with an HC-05, an ESP32 web server opened from a mobile browser, and a smart street light prototype.

Which batch and scheme do the BCA 403T notes follow?

The BCA 403T notes follow the BCA four-year scheme for students admitted in 2024-25 onwards, where Internet of Things is a 4-credit Semester 7 paper. We checked the units against the third- and fourth-year syllabus approved by the AC sub-committee on 19 August 2026. If your batch follows an older scheme, confirm your paper code first.

Is BCA 403T compulsory or an elective?

BCA 403T sits in the Semester 7 table under "Choose any two theory and respective practical electives", listed with BCA 401T E-Commerce. Each theory paper comes with its lab, so taking BCA 403T means taking BCA 403P IoT Lab too. Your institute decides which electives it runs, so confirm with your department before you buy.

Do the BCA 403T notes cover the BCA 403P IoT lab?

No. This book is for the BCA 403T theory paper. It does contain nine working programs that match common BCA 403P tasks, but it is not a practical record. The 403P practical list is set by your teacher in the first week of classes, so use these programs to learn the logic and then write your own record.
