Maslow's need hierarchy and Herzberg's two factors in organisational behaviour: excerpt from page 38 of the MBA(A) 101 notes
Excerpt from page 38
Motivation theories fall into two groups. Content theories explain what motivates people (Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, Alderfer, McGregor), while process theories explain how motivation happens (Vroom, Adams, Locke, Porter-Lawler).
Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory (1943)
Abraham Maslow arranged human needs in a hierarchy of five levels. Once a need is satisfied, it stops motivating, and the next higher need becomes the motivator.
- Physiological needs: food, shelter, basic salary.
- Safety or security needs: job security, pension, a safe workplace.
- Social needs: belonging, friendship, acceptance.
- Esteem needs: recognition, status, self-respect.
- Self-actualisation needs: growth and reaching one's full potential.
Criticism: needs do not always follow a strict order, people may chase several needs at once, the hierarchy may differ across cultures, and the theory is hard to test empirically.
Herzberg's Two-Factor (Motivation-Hygiene) Theory (1959)
Frederick Herzberg interviewed 200 engineers and accountants in Pittsburgh and found that the factors causing satisfaction are different from those causing dissatisfaction.
- Hygiene (maintenance) factors are extrinsic and relate to the job context: company policy and administration, supervision, salary, interpersonal relations, working conditions and job security. Their absence causes dissatisfaction; their presence only removes it.
- Motivators are intrinsic and relate to the job content: achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, and advancement and growth. Their presence creates satisfaction; their absence simply means no satisfaction.
Implication: managers should first remove the dissatisfiers and then motivate people through job enrichment.
Criticism: the sample was small, the critical incident method may be biased, and situational variables are ignored.
McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y (1960)
Theory X assumes the average person dislikes work, avoids responsibility and must be controlled, which leads to autocratic management. Theory Y assumes work is as natural as play or rest, people exercise self-direction and seek responsibility, and creativity is widely spread, which leads to participative management.

How to write MBA(A) 101 answers: case study analysis and ten-to-fifteen-mark theory answers
MBA(A) 101 answers are marked on structure as much as content. The notes give an answer plan for the main long-answer topics: define, explain the framework, draw it, then evaluate.
- MBO (page 15): definition, features, process with a flow diagram, advantages, limitations, making it effective.
- Science or art (page 6): conclude that management is both, science giving the principles and art the skill to apply them, and call it an emerging profession.
- Motivation (page 39): Maslow and Herzberg in detail, then Vroom, with diagrams, a comparison table and applications such as job enrichment.
- Leadership (page 56): definition, importance, styles table, Managerial Grid figure, Hersey-Blanchard, then transformational versus transactional.
For case questions, tie each point to a fact in the case, then name the concept it shows.
Worked example (FreshKart, page 29). Asked to find failures in planning, directing and controlling, use one heading per function. Planning: cities chosen on impressions, with no demand forecasting. Directing: warehouse managers took orders from three seniors, breaking unity of command. Controlling: no KPIs, and problems showed up only in quarterly accounts, so feedback control came too late.

Short and long questions are exam-style practice lists; case questions come fully answered. One per unit, with a pointer:
- What is the Hawthorne Effect? People change behaviour when they know they are observed, from Mayo's 1924-1932 studies (page 9).
- What is "satisficing"? Under Simon's bounded rationality, managers pick the first good-enough option (page 27).
- What is the halo effect? Judging a whole person from one trait (page 35).
- What is social loafing? People put in less effort in a group than alone, first noted by Ringelmann (page 50).
The MBA(A) 101 notes list 34 short-answer and 29 long-answer exam questions across 4 units, plus 5 case studies with 12 solved case questions.

MBA(A) 101 management and OB notes FAQs
How do I get the full MBA(A) 101 notes?
Send a WhatsApp message to 9899436384 using the "Get Full Notes" button on this page. The full MBA(A) 101 notes come only as a printed book; they are not sold as a PDF. Delivery takes a maximum of 5 to 7 days, depending on your location.
How many marks is MBA(A) 101 and what is the passing mark?
The official MBA (Analytics) PDF sets internal assessment for MBA(A) 101 at 25 marks: a 15-mark Class Test-I and 10 marks for a presentation, viva-voce or group discussion. It does not print the end-term marks, the total or a pass percentage. It says the scheme follows GGSIPU Ordinance 11, so check that ordinance on ipu.ac.in for end-term minimums and re-appear rules.
Do the MBA(A) 101 notes include case studies?
Yes. The MBA(A) 101 notes carry 5 case studies with 12 fully answered questions: MBO at DataNova Analytics (Unit 1), FreshKart's expansion decision (Unit 2), a demotivated analytics team and a culture clash after global expansion (Unit 3), and a pricing analytics squad at RetailMax (Unit 4). Each case tests the unit's own theories, such as Herzberg, Hofstede or Tuckman.
Which MBA(A) 101 unit needs the most study time?
Unit 3, Fundamentals of Organizational Behaviour. The official syllabus gives it 16 of the paper's 42 teaching hours, and in the notes it fills 17 pages across 12 sections, from OB models and personality to culture and Hofstede's dimensions. It also has 10 of the 29 long-answer questions in the notes. Units 1 and 2 get 8 hours each, and Unit 4 gets 10.
Which scheme do the MBA(A) 101 notes follow?
The MBA(A) 101 notes follow the GGSIPU MBA (Analytics) Scheme and Syllabus 2022-24 onwards, whose first and second semesters were approved by the Academic Council on 22 March 2023 under Agenda Item 55.77. We checked the unit topics against that PDF on ipu.ac.in on 13 October 2026. If your college shares a newer syllabus, compare its units with the table above.
Why does an analytics student need the MBA(A) 101 notes?
Because the MBA(A) 101 notes link classic theory to data work. They present the quantitative school as the forerunner of business analytics, add a data-driven model to decision making, treat dashboards and KPIs as control techniques, and suggest people analytics for tracking fairness. Three of the five cases are set in analytics teams, such as RetailMax's pricing squad.
