Tuckman's five stages of team building in organisational behaviour: excerpt from page 61 of the MFM 101 notes

Excerpt from page 61

Bruce Tuckman's model explains how a team grows from a group of strangers into a working unit. Each stage shows a typical pattern of behaviour, and the leader's job changes with it.

Stages of team building: behaviour and the leader's role (page 61)
StageBehavioural dynamicsRole of the leader

Team-building process

The notes organise team-building interventions into six steps: diagnosis of team problems such as conflict, low trust or unclear roles through surveys and interviews; goal setting to clarify common priorities; role clarification using role analysis or a RACI chart; interpersonal process improvement through trust-building and conflict-resolution exercises; activities such as outbound training, retreats and offsites; and follow-up with a periodic review of how the team is working.

Common problems in teams

Social loafing is checked by individual accountability, smaller teams and peer evaluation. Groupthink is checked by encouraging dissent, a devil's advocate and outside experts. Task conflict at moderate levels can help, while relationship conflict usually harms.

Lencioni's Five Dysfunctions of a Team trace a chain from absence of trust to fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability and inattention to results. Other common team problems include poor communication, unclear goals and domination by a few members.

How to write MFM 101 answers: definition-led theory answers, labelled diagrams and case-study answers

In this theory paper, structure earns marks.

  • Open with a definition and its author (six for management on page 5).
  • Draw one diagram per long answer: MBO steps (Figure 1.4), the control loop (Figure 2.4), Maslow (Figure 3.2) or Tuckman (Figure 4.1).
  • Use a table for "distinguish" questions: Taylor vs Fayol, group vs team.
  • Leadership answers follow the theory order: trait, behavioural, contingency, contemporary.

Worked example: "Explain the meaning and nature of management. Is management a profession?" (page 17)

  1. Start with Koontz and Weihrich's definition of management.
  2. Explain eight to ten characteristics in one line each.
  3. Use the science, art and profession comparison table, then assess management against a profession's knowledge base, entry requirements, professional association, ethical code and service orientation.
  4. Conclude by explaining that management has professional features but does not meet every criterion of a fully regulated profession.

For case questions: concept, fact, remedy. In Saffron Foods, managers take orders from two bosses, breaching unity of command.

Practise this structure on the GGSIPU MBA (FM) important questions.

MFM 101 Management Process and OB notes FAQs

How do I get the full MFM 101 notes?

Send a WhatsApp message to 9899436384 using the "Get Full Notes" button on this page. The full MFM 101 notes come only as a printed book, not as a PDF. Delivery usually takes up to 5-7 days, and the exact time depends on your location. Price and payment details are shared on WhatsApp before you confirm.

Are the MFM 101 notes a PDF or a printed book?

They are a printed book only; there is no PDF of the full MFM 101 notes. The "View Sample PDF" button shows 7 watermarked pages: 1, 3, 4, 9, 21, 40 and 61, including one page from each unit, so you can check the layout and diagrams first. The book itself is 70 A4 pages, couriered after you order on WhatsApp.

What is the passing mark for MFM 101 in GGSIPU MBA (FM)?

MFM 101 is marked out of 100: 25 internal and 75 end-term. The MBA (FM) scheme PDF for 2021-22 onwards does not state a pass percentage for individual papers. Check the examination rules applicable to your batch, including the relevant GGSIPU Ordinance 11 provisions, for passing criteria, any end-term minimum and re-appear rules. For the degree, the scheme requires at least 102 of 108 credits.

Which MFM 101 unit is the longest in the notes?

Unit III, Fundamentals of Organizational Behaviour, is the longest at 23 pages. It also gets 16 of the 42 official teaching hours. It has 9 diagrams and 19 listed exam questions, covering personality, perception, learning, nine motivation theories, stress, structure, culture and Hofstede. Units I and IV run 14 pages each; Unit II runs 15.

Do the MFM 101 notes give answers to all the exam questions?

No, not to the 65 listed exam questions. Those lists are practice questions, and the unit sections above each list hold the material to answer them. The 16 case-study questions are different: each has a full written answer. For example, the FinEdge burnout case explains the team lead's fundamental attribution error using Kelley's attribution clues.

Do the MFM 101 notes follow the 2021-22 onwards MBA (FM) scheme?

Yes. The notes follow the MBA (Financial Management) scheme and syllabus marked "2021-22 Onwards" and dated 20.05.2022, published on ipu.ac.in. All four units keep the official unit titles, and the syllabus map above shows the page where each official topic starts. If GGSIPU publishes a revised MBA (FM) syllabus, check the new PDF before relying on this map.
