MCA-130 Unit 2: Strategic Design and Role of Information Systems (Emerging IT Infrastructure)

Unit 2 (pages 27 to 49) covers BYOD, data centre tiers, cloud computing and the IaaS, PaaS and SaaS split, enterprise, grid and green computing, IoT, sensors and RFID, Big Data, data and text mining, BI and the strategic design of MIS. It has 13 short-answer questions, 8 long-answer guides, 12 figures and 1 solved numerical.

Quick look: Power Usage Effectiveness of a data centre (from page 35)

  1. Formula: PUE = total facility power ÷ IT equipment power (ideal value 1.0).
  2. Given: total draw 1,800 kW, IT equipment 1,200 kW.
  3. PUE = 1,800 ÷ 1,200 = 1.5; overheads = 600 kW, which is 33.3% of the total.
  4. If cooling upgrades cut overheads to 300 kW, PUE = 1,500 ÷ 1,200 = 1.25, so the centre is greener.

MCA-130 Unit 3: Developing and Managing Information Systems

Unit 3 (pages 50 to 73) covers the long-range MIS plan, classes of information, Davis's four requirement strategies, the development process model, functional systems, DSS, data breaches, IT risk management, cloud security and the fraud triangle. It has 14 short-answer questions, 8 long-answer guides, 11 figures and 2 worked numericals.

TPS, MIS and DSS in the management pyramid: excerpt from page 13 of the MCA-130 notes

Excerpt from page 13

Different levels of management need different systems. The classical way to show this is a pyramid: transaction processing at the base for operational staff, management information and decision support in the middle for middle managers, and executive support at the top for senior management.

Transaction Processing System (TPS)

A TPS is a computerised system that performs and records the daily routine transactions a business needs to run. It serves the operational level. Sales order entry, payroll, hotel reservations, ATM withdrawals and shipment tracking are all examples.

A TPS is highly structured, because its tasks, resources and goals are fixed in advance. It also feeds data to every higher-level system, which is why a TPS failure can stop the business. It works in two ways: batch processing, where data is collected and processed at intervals (payroll), and online or real-time processing, where each transaction is handled at once (an ATM).

Management Information System (MIS)

An MIS serves middle management. It gives routine summary and exception reports on the firm's current performance, using data drawn mainly from the TPS, and managers use them for planning, controlling and decision making.

An MIS answers structured, routine questions that are known well in advance, such as monthly sales by region or a list of items below the reorder level. Its reports come in four kinds: scheduled (periodic), exception, demand (ad hoc) and drill-down. Its analytical power is limited, mostly simple summaries and comparisons.

Decision Support System (DSS)

A DSS supports non-routine, semi-structured decisions by middle managers. It combines models, data and interactive analysis, for example what-if analysis, so a manager can test a change before making it. The MIS answers "what happened?"; the DSS helps answer "what if we change this?".

How to write MCA-130 answers: diagram-first long answers, comparison tables and Indian business examples

Every long question in this paper carries 12 marks, so structure beats length. Each one in the notes has a "write in this order" guide: definition, diagram, comparison table, example, conclusion.

  • Porter's Five Forces: write how an information system counters each force, with one real example.
  • Structure of MIS: draw the Figure 6.1 pyramid with the four functional areas as vertical slices.
  • Mintzberg's roles: add Laudon's point that IS help most in informational and decisional roles.
  • Unit 2 mix-up to avoid: service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) say what is delivered, while deployment models (public, private, hybrid, community) say who uses it and where. In a Unit 3 cloud security answer, add the shared responsibility model.

Worked example: "Explain Porter's Five Forces. How can IS counter each force?"

  1. Draw Figure 10.1.
  2. Explain each force in a line or two.
  3. Give each force an IS response and example, such as a loyalty app against customer power.
  4. End with the generic strategies.

Practise on the GGSIPU MCA important questions before the end-term.

MCA-130 exam corner: 53 short-answer and 32 long-answer questions by unit

The notes label short answers "2.5 Marks" and long-answer guides "12.5 Marks". The official paper sets 12-mark questions, so treat the labels as length guides.

The MCA-130 notes solve 53 short-answer and 32 long-answer questions across 4 units, plus 5 worked numericals.

One question per unit, with answer pointers:

  1. Unit 1: Name Porter's five competitive forces. Pointer: rivalry, new entrants, substitutes, customer power, supplier power.
  2. Unit 2: Differentiate active and passive RFID tags. Pointer: passive: no battery, powered by the reader, short range (FASTag). Active: own battery, long range.
  3. Unit 3: Differentiate parallel and direct cutover conversion. Pointer: parallel runs both systems until the new one is proven (safe, costly); direct cutover switches on a fixed day (cheap, risky).
  4. Unit 4: What is the bullwhip effect? Pointer: demand distortion growing upstream; cut by sharing real-time demand data and vendor-managed inventory.

More practice sits in the MCA-130 important questions.

Yes. The MCA-130 notes include 5 worked numericals: Power Usage Effectiveness of a data centre (Unit 2), goal-seeking analysis and annualised loss expectancy (Unit 3), and social media metrics plus customer lifetime value (Unit 4). They are short and formula-based, so learn the formula, write each step, and state what the result means for the business.

Do the MCA-130 notes follow the 2025-26 GGSIPU MCA syllabus?

Yes. The MCA-130 notes are mapped to the MCA scheme and syllabus for affiliated institutes that applies from academic year 2025-26, approved by the USIC&T Board of Studies on 28 July 2025.
