MCA-205 Unit 3: Inferential Statistics and Hypothesis Testing
Unit 3 (pages 38 to 52) starts with the sampling frame and nine sampling methods, standard error, the Central Limit Theorem and z and t confidence intervals. Six hypothesis-test cases follow, from a battery-life z-test to a paired t-test and an A/B test. It has 8 sections, 12 solved examples, 3 figures and 20 exam questions.
Quick look: which test to use (from page 48)
- One mean, σ known or n of 30 or more: z-test.
- One mean, σ unknown, n below 30: t-test, df = n − 1.
- Two independent means: z-test (large) or pooled t-test (small).
- Same people before and after: paired t-test.
- Two variances: F-test; fit or independence: χ² test.
MCA-205 Unit 4: ANOVA, Chi-Square, Curve Fitting, Regression and Correlation
Unit 4 (pages 53 to 67) moves from the F-test for two variances into one-way and two-way ANOVA, then Chi-square for goodness of fit and independence. Least squares fitting, Karl Pearson's r, rank correlation and both regression lines finish the book. It has 8 sections, 10 solved examples, 3 figures and 21 exam questions.

Type I and Type II errors in statistics: excerpt from page 47 of the MCA-205 notes
Excerpt from page 47
One-tailed or two-tailed?
A test is one-tailed when the alternative hypothesis H₁ uses "<" or ">", so the whole rejection region sits in one tail. It is two-tailed when H₁ uses "≠", so the rejection region is split between both tails. The p-value is the probability of getting a result at least as extreme as the one observed, assuming H₀ is true. Reject H₀ when the p-value is less than or equal to α. The power of a test, 1 − β, is the probability of correctly rejecting a false H₀.
| Test type | H₁ | Critical z at 5% | Critical z at 1% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-tailed | μ ≠ μ₀ | ±1.96 | ±2.576 |
| Right-tailed | μ > μ₀ | +1.645 | +2.33 |
| Left-tailed | μ < μ₀ | −1.645 | −2.33 |

Type I and Type II errors
Because every decision is based on a sample, there is always some risk of getting it wrong. If H₀ is true and we reject it, that is a Type I error (probability α), a false positive. If H₀ is false and we do not reject it, that is a Type II error (probability β), a false negative. The two correct outcomes are keeping a true H₀ (probability 1 − α) and rejecting a false H₀ (the power, 1 − β).
A Type I error is called the producer's risk: rejecting a good lot, convicting an innocent person, or a spam filter sending a genuine email to spam. A Type II error is the consumer's risk: accepting a bad lot, letting a guilty person go free, or missing a disease.
For a fixed sample size, making α smaller makes β larger, and the other way round. The only way to cut both together is to take a bigger sample.
Exam tip from this page
Use the courtroom picture in your answer. H₀ says "the accused is innocent". A Type I error punishes an innocent person; a Type II error frees a guilty one. The law treats the first as more serious, which is why α is kept small.
How to write MCA-205 answers: seven-step hypothesis tests, ANOVA tables and regression lines
MCA-205 numericals earn marks for method. The notes set every test out in seven steps: H₀ and H₁ with the tail, α (5% if not given), the test (z, t, F or χ²), the statistic, the critical value, the decision, and a conclusion in the question's words.
Worked example: single proportion test (page 49)
An app claims 60% or more users are satisfied; 220 of 400 are.
- H₀: P = 0.60, H₁: P < 0.60 (left-tailed), α = 0.05.
- SE = √(0.6 × 0.4 / 400) = 0.0245.
- z = (0.55 − 0.60) / 0.0245 = −2.04.
- −2.04 is below the critical −1.645, so reject H₀: the claim is not justified.
In an ANOVA table, check that the df and SS rows add up to the totals before you decide. For regression, find both coefficients first; if their product is above 1, swap the lines, and state that both pass through (x̄, ȳ).
Write "prescriptive analytics" where the syllabus says "Perspective Analysis", and in Python answers say whether you used the n − 1 or n divisor. Practise this format on GGSIPU MCA important questions.
MCA-205 exam corner: 50 short-answer and 31 long-answer questions by unit
The notes label their questions "2.5 Marks" and "12.5 Marks"; the current paper-setter instructions give 12 marks to Q1 and 12 to each unit question, so plan long answers for 12 marks.

The MCA-205 notes list 50 short-answer and 31 long-answer exam questions across 4 units, plus 45 examples solved step by step.
One question per unit, with answer pointers:
- Unit 1: What is coefficient of variation and why is it used? Pointer: CV = σ / x̄ × 100; lower CV means more consistent.
- Unit 2: 10% of bulbs are defective; in 8, find P(exactly 2) and P(at most 1). Pointer: binomial, n = 8, p = 0.1: 0.149 and 0.813.
- Unit 3: A sample of 400 has mean 98 and SD 12. Test at 5% whether μ = 100. Pointer: z = −3.33, beyond ±1.96, so reject H₀.
- Unit 4: Regression lines are 8x − 10y + 66 = 0 and 40x − 18y = 214. Find x̄, ȳ and r. Pointer: x̄ = 13, ȳ = 17; byx = 0.8, bxy = 0.45, so r = 0.6.

MCA-205 statistics notes FAQs
How do I get the full MCA-205 notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" or the WhatsApp button at the end of this page and send the pre-filled message. The full MCA-205 notes come only as a printed book; they are not available as a PDF. Once your order is confirmed on WhatsApp, the book reaches you within 5 to 7 days at most, depending on your location.
What is the passing mark for MCA-205?
MCA-205 is marked out of 100, and its end-term paper is set for 60 marks (12 + 48); the official PDF does not print the internal share. The MCA scheme of examination states passing marks as 40%, which is 40 out of 100, for every paper. For end-term minimums and re-appear rules, see GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Is MCA-205 compulsory in MCA Semester 3?
No. MCA-205 is one of eleven Core Elective II papers, and each student picks any one. The scheme also says an elective needs at least 20 students for classes to run; with fewer, it may still be offered, but students complete it through a MOOC platform such as SWAYAM after approval from the Programme Co-ordination Committee.
Which unit of MCA-205 has the most solved examples?
Unit 2, Probability and Probability Distributions, has 13 solved examples, the most of the four units. They cover the addition and multiplication rules, a contingency table, two Bayes' theorem problems, discrete and continuous random variables, and binomial, Poisson and normal problems. Unit 3 comes next with 12, most of them hypothesis tests worked in seven steps.
Do the MCA-205 notes include Python code?
Yes. Each unit has a Python practice block, on pages 21, 36, 51 and 66. They use pandas for averages, SD and quartiles, SciPy for probabilities, t-tests and Chi-square, and statsmodels for two-way ANOVA. Comments show the expected output, so MCA-205 students can check their own runs against the hand-worked answers in the same unit.
Do the MCA-205 notes match the 2025-26 MCA syllabus?
Yes. We checked the MCA-205 notes against the GGSIPU MCA scheme for affiliated institutes from academic year 2025-26, approved by the USIC&T Board of Studies on 28 July 2025. All four units and every listed topic are covered. Only the unit headings are ours, because the official PDF numbers the four units without giving them titles.
