MCA-233 Unit 3: Compression with Huffman, Arithmetic, RLE, LZW, JPEG, MPEG and MP3
Unit 3 (pages 28 to 41, 15 sub-topics) starts with why compression is needed (one second of raw Full HD is about 178 MB), lossless versus lossy coding and Shannon entropy. A full Huffman tree for A = 15, B = 7, C = 6, D = 6, E = 5 gives 87 bits against 117.
Then come adaptive Huffman, arithmetic coding, RLE, LZW, the 8 JPEG steps, MPEG I, P and B frames and MP3 masking. It has 10 solved numericals (6 worked, 4 practice with answers), 14 short-answer and 10 long-answer questions.
Quick look: LZW encoding of "BABAABAAA" (from page 36)
Start: A = 1, B = 2
Output: 2 1 3 4 1 7
Added: BA=3, AB=4, BAA=5, ABA=6, AA=7Nine characters leave as six codes; no dictionary is sent.
MCA-233 Unit 4: Multimedia Communication, Internet, Digital Communication and Streaming
Unit 4 (pages 42 to 57, 25 sub-topics) is the longest unit. It covers Halsall's five network types, QoS parameters, 4G versus 5G, H.323 and SIP, conferencing and interactive TV, then IPv4 header fields, fragmentation and IPv4/IPv6 tunnelling.
It ends with isochronous transmission, HLS and DASH, RTP, RTCP and RTSP, WFQ scheduling and token bucket policing. It has 6 solved numericals (3 worked, 3 practice with answers), 14 short-answer and 11 long-answer questions.

RSVP messages and DiffServ classes in multimedia networking: excerpt from page 45 of the MCA-233 notes
Excerpt from page 45
How RSVP sets up a reservation
- PATH message: the sender sends it downstream towards the receivers. It carries the sender's TSpec and records the previous hop in each router.
- RESV message: the receiver sends it upstream along the reverse path with the FlowSpec (the QoS it wants). Each router on the path runs admission control; if it accepts, it reserves resources and forwards the RESV.
- Data then flows with the reserved QoS, and PATH and RESV are refreshed periodically. PathTear, ResvTear, PathErr and ResvErr remove state or report errors.
RSVP reservations come in three styles: Wildcard Filter (one shared reservation for all senders), Fixed Filter (a separate reservation per sender) and Shared Explicit (one shared reservation for a named list of senders).
Differentiated Services (DiffServ)
DiffServ (RFC 2475) is a scalable, class-based QoS architecture. Packets are sorted into a few classes, and core routers keep no per-flow state. The 6-bit DSCP in the redefined IPv4 TOS byte (or IPv6 Traffic Class) marks the class. Edge routers classify, mark, meter, police and shape traffic as per the SLA; core routers just forward by the per-hop behaviour (PHB).
| PHB | What it gives | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Expedited Forwarding (EF) | Low delay, jitter and loss with a guaranteed rate, a "virtual leased line" | VoIP, video conferencing |
| Assured Forwarding (AF) | 4 classes × 3 drop precedences, assured while traffic stays in profile | Business data, streaming |
| Default | Normal best-effort treatment | Web, e-mail |

RSVP itself is receiver-initiated, works for unicast and multicast, reserves in one direction only and uses soft state, so a reservation expires unless refreshed. Compared with IntServ, which keeps per-flow state in every router and needs RSVP, DiffServ needs no signalling and scales well in large networks, but gives relative or statistical assurance rather than a hard end-to-end guarantee.

Answers sit in each unit's sections. Short answers suit the 12-mark Q1, long answers the 12-mark unit questions.
The MCA-233 notes list 54 short-answer and 41 long-answer exam questions across 4 units, plus 23 solved numericals.
One question per unit, with answer pointers:
- Unit 1: State the Nyquist sampling theorem. Pointer: sample at least twice the highest frequency; hence CD audio uses 44.1 kHz.
- Unit 2: Differentiate between NTSC and PAL. Pointer: NTSC: 525 lines, 30 fps, USA and Japan. PAL: 625 lines, 25 fps, India and the UK.
- Unit 3: What are I, P and B frames? Pointer: I is coded alone, P is predicted from the previous I or P frame, B from both sides and compresses most.
- Unit 4: Differentiate between leaky bucket and token bucket. Pointer: leaky bucket outputs a constant rate; token bucket saves tokens while idle and allows bursts up to b.
More practice sits in the MCA-233 important questions.

How to write MCA-233 answers: size numericals, compression traces and twelve-mark comparison answers
MCA-233 rewards three answer types: size numericals, traces (a Huffman tree, an LZW table) and twelve-mark theory answers built around a comparison table. For a numerical, write the formula, substitute with units, then box the result.
Worked example: storage for 2 minutes of stereo audio at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit (Unit 1 exam page)
- Formula: size = sampling rate × (bits ÷ 8) × channels × seconds.
- Substitute: 44,100 × 2 × 2 × 120.
- Result: 21,168,000 bytes, about 20.2 MB.
The usual slips: not dividing bits by 8, or skipping the channels.
In a Huffman trace, show the merge table, tree and code table; the notes add that the C and D tie can break either way and still give 87 bits.
For a theory answer, open with a two-line definition, add a comparison table (analog versus digital video, static versus dynamic Huffman) and close with uses. Practise this format on GGSIPU MCA important questions.
