MCA 241 Unit 3: Image Reconstruction from Projections and Image Data Compression

Unit 3 (pages 41 to 57) covers the Radon transform, sinogram, the Fourier-slice theorem, filtered back-projection with a windowed ramp, and ART on a 2 × 2 image; then redundancy, entropy, Huffman, arithmetic, LZW, run-length, predictive and DCT coding, and baseline JPEG. It has 8 solved numericals, 14 short answers, 9 long questions and 9 figures.

Quick look: compression ratio of a 2048 × 2048, 8-bit image (from page 47)

  1. Original: 2048 × 2048 × 8 bits = 4,194,304 bytes; compressed: 524,288 bytes.
  2. C = 4,194,304 / 524,288 = 8, written 8 : 1.
  3. R = 1 − 1/8 = 0.875: 87.5% of the original data was redundant.

MCA 241 Unit 4: Image Segmentation and Morphological Processing

Unit 4 (pages 58 to 73) covers point, line and edge masks, Sobel, LoG and Canny detectors, the Hough transform, iterative and Otsu thresholding, region growing and split-and-merge; then erosion, dilation, opening, closing, hit-or-miss, eight morphological algorithms and grey-scale morphology. It has 6 solved numericals, 14 short answers, 8 long questions and 5 figures.

Quick look: basic global threshold for pixels 10, 12, 15, 200, 205, 210 (from page 65)

  1. Start with the mean: T = 652 / 6 = 108.7.
  2. Split: m1 = 205 for {200, 205, 210}; m2 = 12.33 for {10, 12, 15}.
  3. New T = (205 + 12.33) / 2 = 108.7: no change, so T ≈ 109.

Mapper, quantizer and symbol coder in image compression: excerpt from page 49 of the MCA 241 notes

Excerpt from page 49

Image compression models

A compression system has two parts: an encoder, which compresses, and a decoder, which decompresses. Together they are called a codec. The encoder works in three independent stages, and each stage attacks a different kind of redundancy.

1. Mapper

The mapper transforms f(x, y) into a format designed to reduce spatial and temporal redundancy. Its output may be run-lengths, prediction errors or DCT coefficients. The mapper is generally reversible, so no information is lost at this stage.

2. Quantizer

The quantizer reduces the accuracy of the mapper's output according to a chosen fidelity criterion. This removes information the viewer would not miss. Because many inputs map to one output, quantisation is irreversible, and for this reason it is left out completely in lossless (error-free) compression.

3. Symbol coder

The symbol coder generates a fixed-length or variable-length code for the quantizer's output, which reduces coding redundancy. Huffman coding is the usual example. Like the mapper, it is reversible.

The decoder

The decoder has only two blocks: a symbol decoder and an inverse mapper, which perform the inverse operations in reverse order. There is no inverse quantizer, because quantisation cannot be undone.

Exam point: when a question asks you to "draw the general compression model", the marks sit in the block diagram plus one line on what each block removes. State clearly that the quantizer is the only irreversible block, and that is the line that separates lossless from lossy compression.

Verify it in the official MCA scheme and syllabus, A.S. 2025-26 onwards (MCA-241 is on pages 151 to 153 of that PDF).

Every course in GGSIPU notes is mapped to its official PDF the same way.

How to write MCA 241 answers: numericals in table form and filter comparisons with transfer functions

MCA 241 rewards two habits: numericals laid out as step tables, and filters compared side by side with formulas. Each long question in the notes names its source section, for example "(Sections 10, 11)" for Wiener versus CLS.

On marks: the notes label short answers "2.5 Marks" and long answers "12.5 Marks", but the 2025-26 paper-setter instructions set 12 marks for the whole of Question 1 and 12 marks for each unit question. Plan every long answer for 12 marks, sub-parts included.

Worked example: histogram equalisation, 3-bit 64 × 64 image (pages 15 to 16)

State the steps first: pr = nk / MN, running sum, multiply by L − 1 = 7, round.

Close with the key line: only 5 output levels remain, so the result is not perfectly flat, but contrast rises.

For comparisons, copy the notes' tables: ILPF, BLPF and GLPF with ringing; inverse, Wiener and CLS where H ≈ 0; FBP against ART. Practise this format on GGSIPU MCA important questions.

The MCA 241 notes solve 56 short-answer questions and map 34 long-answer questions to their sections across 4 units, plus 28 solved numerical examples.

One question per unit, with answer pointers:

  1. Unit 1: How many bits store a 512 × 512 image with 128 grey levels? Pointer: k = 7, so 512 × 512 × 7 bits.
  2. Unit 2: What is the main limitation of inverse filtering? Pointer: write F̂ = F + N/H and explain N/H where H is near zero.
  3. Unit 3: Why is the DCT preferred in JPEG? Pointer: energy compaction, real values, fast algorithms, fewer blocking artefacts.
  4. Unit 4: Why does the Hough transform use ρ = x cos θ + y sin θ? Pointer: slope form fails for vertical lines.

More practice sits in the MCA 241 important questions.

MCA 241 DIP notes FAQs

How do I get the full MCA 241 notes?

The full MCA 241 notes come only as a printed book, not as a PDF. Tap "Get Full Notes" or the WhatsApp button at the end of this page and send the pre-filled message to 9899436384. The book reaches you within 5 to 7 days at most, depending on your location. The sample PDF shows the layout first.

Is MCA 241 Digital Image Processing compulsory in MCA Semester 3?

No. MCA 241 is one of eleven options in Core Elective III, and you choose one paper from that group. It carries 3 credits with 3 lecture hours a week. If fewer than 20 students at your institute choose it, classes may not run and you complete it through a MOOC such as SWAYAM, with institute evaluation for the credits.

What is the passing mark for MCA 241?

MCA 241 is marked out of 100: 40 internal and 60 end-term, where the end-term is 12 marks for Question 1 plus four unit questions of 12 marks. The MCA scheme of examination states pass marks as 40%, which is 40 out of 100. End-term minimums and re-appear rules are set by Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.

Which MCA 241 unit has the most solved numericals?

Unit 1, with 10: storage bits, distances, negative, log and gamma transforms, bit-plane value, histogram equalisation, median versus mean, Laplacian sharpening and the Sobel response. Unit 3 follows with 8 coding problems such as Huffman, arithmetic coding, LZW and run-length. Unit 4 has 6, including a full Otsu threshold table, and Unit 2 has 4, led by the DFT.

Do the MCA 241 notes include MATLAB programs for the lab?

No. The MCA 241 notes are theory notes for the end-term paper and contain no MATLAB code. They do explain the concepts the MCA-267 lab asks you to implement, such as histogram equalisation, frequency-domain filters, noise removal and compression, which helps you understand what each lab program does and answer viva questions on it confidently.

Are the MCA 241 notes in English or Hindi?

The MCA 241 notes are written in English, using the same terms as the Gonzalez and Woods text book and the official syllabus, such as Wiener filter, filtered back-projection and hit-or-miss transform. Formulas are written in standard notation, and every unit has a one-line formula table, so you can revise the night before the paper without searching the full chapter.
