The BED 102 notes list 37 long-answer and 48 short-note questions across 4 units, plus 46 one-liners with answers. One exam-style question per unit:

  1. What is a learning style? Explain Fleming's VARK model and its educational implications. Pointer: Keefe's definition, four styles with a strategy each, multimodal learners, criticism.
  2. Discuss Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory. Explain ZPD and scaffolding with examples. Pointer: "every function appears twice", the ZPD diagram, MKO, and a Piaget versus Vygotsky table.
  3. Discuss Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. How can a teacher use it in the classroom? Pointer: Frames of Mind (1983), eight intelligences with an activity each, "How are you smart?" to close.
  4. How can a teacher cater to individual differences through educational programmes? Pointer: three kinds of provision, Dalton and Winnetka, the fractions example.

Thorndike's trial and error theory in educational psychology: excerpt from page 25 of the BED 102 notes

Excerpt from page 25

Thorndike's Trial and Error Theory (Connectionism)

Edward L. Thorndike (American, 1874 to 1949) is called the father of educational psychology. He said learning is the formation of connections, or bonds, between a stimulus and a response (the S-R bond). Learning happens through trial and error: wrong responses drop out and the correct response gets "stamped in".

Experiment: the cat in the puzzle box

A hungry cat was placed in a puzzle box, with fish kept outside. The cat made many random movements, and by chance it pressed the lever and the door opened. Over repeated trials the wrong movements reduced and the time taken to escape fell step by step. The learning curve was gradual, not sudden.

Steps in trial and error learning

Drive (hunger) → goal (food) → block (the box) → random movements → chance success → selection of the right response → fixation.

Primary laws of learning

  • Law of Readiness: when a learner is ready to act, acting is satisfying; forcing an unready learner is annoying. In class: motivate before teaching and check readiness.
  • Law of Exercise (Use and Disuse): connections grow stronger with practice and weaker without it. In class: drill, revision and practice work.
  • Law of Effect: a response followed by satisfaction is strengthened; one followed by annoyance is weakened. In class: praise, rewards and a pleasant classroom.

Thorndike also gave secondary laws: multiple response, set or attitude, pre-potency of elements, response by analogy and associative shifting.

Educational implications

  • Give learners enough chances for practice and self-correction.
  • Use rewards and success experiences; avoid punishment and fear.
  • Prepare the learner before starting a new lesson.
  • Useful for skills such as typing, swimming and maths problem solving.
  • Limitation: it explains mechanical learning but ignores understanding and insight, which is why the notes set it against Kohler's insight theory on page 28.

Do the BED 102 notes cover the full GGSIPU syllabus?

Yes for the theory: every topic in all four official units has its own section. The 15-mark practical assignment is fieldwork under your faculty mentor, so it is not in the notes.

BED 102 and the GGSIPU B.Ed Sem 2 papers it connects to

BED 102 has no paired lab; its practical part is the field engagement listed in the GGSIPU B.Ed syllabus.

BED 102 field engagement (any one): four 2-hour observations of children at play with a diary, or intelligence testing with culture-fair tests and an e-portfolio.

Where BED 102 units feed other Semester 2 papers:

  • Unit 1 VARK and models of teaching → Pedagogy of School Subject (I) and (II), BED 116 to BED 150.
  • Unit 2 Rogers' significant learning → BED 108 Experiential Learning, whose Unit II covers Kolb's Learning Style Inventory.
  • Unit 3 standardised, culture-fair tests → BED 106 Assessment of Learning, whose Unit II covers test planning and item analysis.

Other Semester 2 papers: BED 104 Contemporary Perspectives in Education, BED 110 Entrepreneurship in Education, BED 152 Reading and Reflecting on Texts and BED 154 PSE-II.

How to write BED 102 answers: fifteen-mark theory answers built on thinker, experiment and classroom use

Each theory answer needs three things: the thinker with a date, the experiment or model, and what a teacher does with it in class. The exam tips in these BED 102 Learning and Teaching IPU notes all push that structure.

Worked plan (page 6 tip), "Explain the meaning and nature of learning and teaching and the relationship between them":

  1. Meaning with two definitions each (Gates, Crow and Crow; Morrison, Gage).
  2. Nature: 6 to 8 points each, such as "relatively permanent" and "triadic process".
  3. Relationship via Dewey's selling and buying analogy, with Figure 1.1.
  4. A short difference table.
  5. Conclusion on NEP 2020's learner-centred approach.

Other printed tips: draw Figure 4.1 in VARK answers (page 13); name two dated tests per type in testing answers (page 50).

What is the passing mark for BED 102 at GGSIPU?

BED 102 is marked out of 100: 75 for the theory exam, 15 for practical assignments or field engagement and 10 for minors. The B.Ed scheme of examination states pass marks as 40%, which is 40 out of 100. For end-term minimums, re-appear and other examination rules, read Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in or ask your institute's examination cell.

Do the BED 102 notes cover the practical assignment or field engagement?

No. The BED 102 field engagement is practical work you do yourself under a faculty mentor: either play observation diaries or intelligence testing with an e-portfolio, and it carries 15 marks. The notes cover all four theory units. Unit 3 explains individual and group tests, Raven's Matrices and culture-fair testing, which gives you the theory behind the testing option.

Which BED 102 unit has the most exam questions?

Units 2 and 3 tie at 34 questions each in the BED 102 notes: 10 long-answer questions, 12 short notes and 12 one-liners. Unit 2 needs the most memory work, with eight learning theorists. Unit 1 has the fewest, at 30, but its development and VARK questions link to the pedagogy papers, so do not skip it.

Are these BED 102 notes for the current B.Ed syllabus?

Yes. The BED 102 notes are mapped to the B.Ed Course Curriculum (Two Years) for session 2023-24 onwards, the scheme in which BED 102 is a 4-credit, 100-mark Semester 2 paper.
