The 2026-27 edition maps BED 124 to the session 2023-24 curriculum and draws its examples from Iqbal, Ghalib and Premchand. Last updated 14 October 2026. Our editorial policy explains how notes are written and reviewed.
The same team prepares GGSIPU important questions for each course it covers.
How to write BED 124 answers: named definitions, Urdu examples and an eclectic conclusion
The BED 124 exam tips point to one style. Open a ten-mark answer with at least two definitions and their authors; the notes call Sapir's 1921 definition of language the safest to memorise. Name sarf (morphology) and nahv (syntax) when a question touches structure.
Give every point an Urdu example. Draw a flow wherever one exists: L → S → R → W for the four skills, the seven prose-lesson steps, or Preparation → Presentation → Follow-up for aids. For reading defects, write the five points the notes list: wrong letter shapes, ignored nuqtas, no aeraab, word-by-word reading and flat expression.
End with a balanced line. Translation is "a bridge, not a crutch"; no single method is best, so a good Urdu teacher is eclectic; "an aid is an aid, not a substitute for the teacher".
Worked example (Unit 2, long answer): "Discuss the grammar–translation, direct and bilingual methods of teaching Urdu with their merits and limitations."
- Separate approach, method and technique.
- Grammar–translation: rules first, then translation; easy in large classes, weak on speaking.
- Direct: Urdu through Urdu only; builds fluency, but abstract words such as adl and imaan are hard without translation.
- Bilingual (C.J. Dodson, 1967): Hindi gives meaning, practice stays in Urdu; suits Delhi and UP classrooms.
- Close with the eclectic approach.
Practise this structure on the GGSIPU B.Ed important questions.
BED 124 and the GGSIPU B.Ed Sem 2 papers it connects to
BED 124 has no lab paper; its practical credit comes through assignments and field engagement, and every course is listed on the GGSIPU B.Ed syllabus page.
- BED 106 Assessment of Learning covers assessment of, for and as learning, CCE and blueprints; BED 124 Unit 4 applies them to an Urdu class.
- BED 154 PSE-II asks trainees to organise co-curricular activities and keep a reflective journal on CCE; Unit 3 and the CCE topic of Unit 4 feed it.
- BED 102 Learning and Teaching teaches learning theories; Unit 3 uses Dewey, Vygotsky, Kolb and Bloom to tie activities to outcomes.
Also in this term: BED 104 Contemporary Perspectives in Education, BED 108 Experiential Learning, BED 110 Entrepreneurship in Education, BED 152 Reading and Reflecting on Texts, and a second pedagogy paper.
Matla, maqta and radeef in Urdu poetry teaching: excerpt from page 29 of the BED 124 notes
Excerpt from page 29
Aims of teaching poetry
Poetry (شاعری) is taught first for enjoyment: pupils should feel the rhythm, music and beauty of words. The teacher also builds correct recitation in two styles, tahtul-lafz (without melody) and tarannum (with melody). Other aims are to develop imagination and emotion, enrich vocabulary and idioms, build appreciation (tahseen) of thought, style and figures of speech, and introduce great poets and the mushaira tradition.
Technical terms of Urdu poetry
- Sher: a couplet of two lines that gives a complete idea.
- Misra: one line of a sher. The first is misra-e-oola, the second misra-e-saani.
- Beher: the metre, or rhythm pattern, of the poem.
- Qaafiya: the rhyming word that changes and comes just before the radeef.
- Radeef: the word or phrase repeated exactly at the end of rhyming lines.
- Matla: the opening couplet of a ghazal, in which both lines rhyme.
- Maqta: the last couplet of a ghazal, carrying the poet's pen-name.
- Takhallus: the pen-name itself, such as Ghalib, Mir, Dagh or Faiz.
Ghazal
The ghazal is the most popular form of Urdu poetry; the word literally means talking to the beloved. It is built from independent couplets, usually 5 to 15, and each sher is complete in itself. The same beher, qaafiya and radeef run through the poem, which opens with a matla and closes with a maqta.
Its themes are love, beauty, separation, life, mysticism (tasawwuf) and philosophy. Its great names include Wali Dakhni, Mir Taqi Mir, Ghalib, Momin, Dagh Dehlvi, Hasrat Mohani, Firaq and Faiz.
Nazm
A nazm is a poem on one central theme with a continuous line of thought from start to finish, and it always has a title. Its themes include nature, society, patriotism, childhood and morals. There are three types: paband nazm with fixed rhyme and metre, nazm-e-mu'arra or blank verse with metre but no rhyme, and azad nazm or free verse. Key poets are Nazeer Akbarabadi, Hali, Allama Iqbal, Josh Malihabadi, Faiz and Akhtarul Iman.

BED 124 Urdu notes FAQs
How do I get the full BED 124 notes?
Message Unnati Educations on WhatsApp at 9899436384 and ask for the BED 124 Teaching of Urdu notes. The full notes come only as a printed book of 68 pages; they are not available as a PDF. Delivery takes a maximum of 5 to 7 days, depending on your location.
What is the passing mark in BED 124 Teaching of Urdu?
BED 124 is marked out of 100: 75 for the theory exam, 15 for practical assignments or field engagement and 10 for minors. The B.Ed scheme of examination states pass marks as 40%, which is 40 out of 100. For end-term minimums, re-appear and result rules, read GGSIPU Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in rather than relying on second-hand figures.
Is BED 124 Pedagogy of School Subject I or II?
It can be either. The Semester 2 scheme has two slots, Pedagogy of School Subject (I) and (II), and both take one paper from the BED 116 to BED 150 list. BED 124 Teaching of Urdu fills whichever of the two slots your institute assigns to you. Both slots carry 4 credits and 100 marks each.
Which BED 124 unit has the most pages?
Unit 1, Fundamentals of Language and Skill Development, runs 20 pages (pages 3 to 22) and holds 13 short and 7 long questions. Unit 2 follows with 17 pages, Unit 4 with 16 and Unit 3 with 13. Unit 2 matches Unit 1 on questions and covers the most literary forms: six of poetry and seven of prose.
Do I need to read Urdu script to use the BED 124 notes?
No. The explanations are in English, and every Urdu word, sher or example sentence is printed in Nastaliq with its Roman spelling beside it, such as ترجمہ (tarjuma). A trainee who reads Hindi can follow the notes easily. Exam answers still need Urdu examples, so practising the script alongside the notes is worth the effort.
Does the BED 124 book include a lesson plan?
Yes. Page 27 has a full sample lesson plan for teaching Allama Iqbal's nazm Bachche ki Dua to Class VII in 40 minutes, laid out in Herbart's steps from preparation to home assignment. Page 28 gives the unit-plan format. Use them to learn the structure; the plans you submit in practice teaching should be your own, written for your class.
