Edgar Dale's Cone of Experience in Home Science teaching: excerpt from page 33 of the BED 130 notes
Excerpt from page 33 (Unit 2, Section 8: Audio-Visual Aids in Teaching of Home Science)
Meaning of audio-visual aids
Audio-visual aids are devices that help learning through hearing, seeing or both. They turn abstract ideas into concrete ones and make learning more interesting and longer-lasting. Edgar Dale (1946, 1962) explained their role through his Cone of Experience.
Two definitions to quote
Edgar Dale: audio-visual materials are those which do not depend mainly on reading to convey meaning. Burton: audio-visual aids are sensory objects or images which start, stimulate and reinforce learning.
The Cone of Experience
Dale arranged learning experiences from the most concrete at the base to the most abstract at the top. The base gives direct experience; the top gives only words. Here is each level with a Home Science classroom example from the notes.
| Level (concrete to abstract) | Home Science example |
|---|---|
| 1. Direct purposeful experiences | Cooking a dish, stitching a garment |
| 2. Contrived experiences | Food models, kitchen layout models, dummy dress forms |
| 3. Dramatised experiences | Role play of a consumer and a shopkeeper |
| 4. Demonstrations | Teacher shows stain removal |
| 5. Field trips | Visit to a dairy plant or textile mill |
| 6. Exhibits | Display of embroidery and preserved foods |
| 7. Television / educational video | Doordarshan or YouTube cookery and nutrition programmes |
| 8. Motion pictures | Documentary films on malnutrition |
| 9. Recordings, radio, still pictures | Radio talk on health; photographs of deficiency diseases |
| 10. Visual symbols | Charts, graphs, diagrams, the food pyramid |
| 11. Verbal symbols | Words, lecture, textbook reading |

Key point for the Home Science teacher
The lower an experience sits in the cone, the more concrete and lasting the learning. A Home Science lesson should lean on direct, contrived and demonstration experiences, and use lectures and textbook reading only to tie them together.
How to write BED 130 answers: lesson plans, blueprints and ten-mark method answers
The notes use one pattern for long answers: concept, a definition with the author's name, steps as a flow chart, merits and limitations, then one Home Science classroom example. Draw a lesson plan in two columns (teacher activity, student activity). For the achievement test, write the steps, one weightage table and a small blueprint whose rows and columns reach the same total.
Worked example: ten-mark answer on action research
- Concept: the teacher's own small study of a classroom problem; Kurt Lewin (1946), Stephen M. Corey (1953).
- Definition: quote Corey (page 66).
- Characteristics: by practitioners, local, immediate, cyclical.
- Steps: identify, delimit, find causes, frame action hypotheses, act, evaluate, conclude.
- Example table: 60% of Class XI submit practical records late; weekly checking and a monthly award for 6 weeks; compare submission rates before and after.
The book's tip for this answer is that the classroom example carries it. Practise the five-part layout with GGSIPU B.Ed important questions.

- Unit 1: What is SUPW? Who recommended it? Expand it, name the Ishwarbhai Patel Committee (1977), add two Home Science activities.
- Unit 2: Explain the micro-teaching cycle. Teach 6, feedback 6, re-plan 12, re-teach 6, re-feedback 6: 36 minutes.
- Unit 3: How will you organise a field trip? Before, during and after stages, with one place per content area.
- Unit 4: Achievement test vs diagnostic test. Compare purpose, score, timing, coverage and follow-up.

BED 130 and the GGSIPU B.Ed Sem 2 papers it connects to: lab planning, ICT and assessment links
BED 130 has no lab paper; its practical credit is one field assignment, listed with every other course on the GGSIPU B.Ed syllabus page.
For the assignments, "Planning and Organization of Home Science Laboratory" uses Unit 2, Section 10 (pages 35 to 36); the ICT resources and multimedia lesson options use Unit 3, Section 5 (page 48); co-curricular activities draw on SUPW (Unit 1) and exhibitions (Unit 3).
Within Semester 2, BED 102 Learning and Teaching supports the Unit 2 lesson plans, BED 106 Assessment of Learning gives the theory Unit 4 applies, BED 108 Experiential Learning shares field trips and surveys, and BED 110 Entrepreneurship in Education links to SUPW products. BED 104 Contemporary Perspectives in Education, BED 152 Reading and Reflecting on Texts, BED 154 PSE-II and your second pedagogy paper complete the semester.

Our team confirms your order on WhatsApp, and the book reaches you within a maximum of 5 to 7 days, depending on your location.
What are the total marks and passing mark for BED 130?
BED 130 is marked out of 100: 75 for the theory exam, 15 for practical assignments or field engagement and 10 for minors. The B.Ed scheme of examination states pass marks as 40%, which is 40 out of 100. For end-term rules, re-appear chances and anything else the B.Ed scheme does not print, check Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in.
Which BED 130 unit has the most exam questions?
Unit 2, Planning and Designing for Effective Instruction, has 25: 14 short-answer and 11 long-answer. It is also the longest unit at 18 pages and 10 sections, covering micro teaching, unit and lesson plans, all four content areas, teaching aids and the laboratory. Unit 4 is the shortest, with 21 questions over 13 pages of notes.
Does BED 130 include a ready Home Science lesson plan?
Yes. Page 26 has a Herbartian lesson plan on Vitamin A for Class IX (40 minutes) with objectives, introduction questions, presentation, blackboard summary and home assignment. Page 25 has a six-period unit plan on Nutrients, and page 28 shows a 5E lesson on food adulteration. Use them as models and swap in your own topic.
Is BED 130 the same as Class XI-XII Home Science?
No. BED 130 is a pedagogy paper: it trains you to plan, teach and assess Home Science in school. Foods and Nutrition, Human Development, Textiles and Resource Management appear in Unit 2 as areas you will teach, each with methods, activities and aids. You still need sound school-level subject knowledge for your own teaching practice lessons.
Which BED 130 practical assignment do the notes support best?
You choose any one of four. The notes give most material for "Planning and Organization of Home Science Laboratory": location, units, fittings, registers, safety and the teacher's role on pages 35 to 36. The ICT tools table on page 48 helps with the ICT option. Co-curricular activities and the multimedia lesson have no step-by-step guide.
