MFA-114 Unit 2: Human Resource Planning
Also covered as "Human Resource Planning and HR Processes". It runs from HR planning and forecasting (Delphi, ratio-trend, regression, Markov) through job design and job evaluation to recruitment, selection, induction and socialisation. It ends with emerging HR trends, digital HR tools and competency based selection.
Pages 15 to 29 · 12 sections · 11 diagrams · 3 worked illustrations · 13 short and 9 long questions.
Quick look: work-study method for manpower demand (from page 18)
- 1,20,000 units × 0.5 standard hour = 60,000 hours of work.
- 60,000 ÷ 2,000 hours per worker = 30 workers.
- Adjust for 20% absence: 30 ÷ 0.80 = 37.5, so 38 workers.
- With 32 on the rolls, recruit 6 more.
MFA-114 Unit 3: Development and Career Management
Unit 3 (10 hours) covers the training process, training methods, e-learning, and employee development with career and succession planning. Its second half covers appraisal and performance management, rating errors, traditional and modern methods, then empowerment and engagement.
Pages 30 to 42 · 10 sections · 11 diagrams · 2 worked illustrations · 14 short and 8 long questions.
Quick look: training ROI, Phillips' fifth level (from page 32)
- A bank spends ₹4,00,000 training its relationship managers.
- Extra profit linked to the training: ₹10,00,000.
- ROI = (10,00,000 − 4,00,000) ÷ 4,00,000 × 100 = 150%.
MFA-114 Unit 4: Contemporary Issues in HR
Unit 4 (10 hours) covers work-life balance, HRIS types and modules, happiness at work through PERMA, protean careers, the 2022 moonlighting debate in Indian IT and its legal position, and workforce diversity with DEI.

How to write MFA-114 answers: model diagrams, author definitions and comparison tables
MFA-114 is a theory paper, so marks come from structure. The notes follow one pattern you can copy: a definition from a named author, a labelled diagram, then a comparison or merits table. Flippo and Dessler for HRM and Geisler for manpower planning give ready opening lines.
For a 12.5-mark question on the functions of HRM, the notes' exam tip is to draw Figure 1.4 first, then write one line each on the 4 managerial and 6 operative functions. The memory word is PDCIMS: procurement, development, compensation, integration, maintenance, separation.
For a models question, write four models (the notes suggest Michigan, Harvard, Guest and Ulrich), each with a small diagram and a merits and demerits table. For appraisal methods, split traditional from modern, draw Figures 3.8 and 3.9 and add the paired comparison formula N(N − 1) ÷ 2.
For workforce diversity, follow concept, dimensions (Figure 4.7), benefits, challenges, strategies and the Indian legal framework, and use the terms glass ceiling, tokenism and unconscious bias. For a Unit II numerical such as work-study or Markov analysis, write the formula, show each step and end with a one-line reading of the result.
Two habits lose easy marks here. Mixing up job description (about the job) with job specification (about the person), and calling recruitment negative when it is the positive, pool-building step. Keep both distinctions ready as two-column tables with at least five bases each.
Worked example: "Distinguish between recruitment and selection." Line one: recruitment searches for and attracts candidates (Flippo); selection picks the best of them. Then the five-row table from page 24: meaning, nature (positive vs negative), sequence, aim and process. Close with: recruitment builds the pool, selection narrows it.
Practise this format on GGSIPU MBA (FA) important questions before your class tests.
MFA-114 and the GGSIPU MBA (FA) Sem 2 papers it connects to

Job description and job specification in HR planning: excerpt from page 20 of the MFA-114 notes
Excerpt from page 20 of the MFA-114 Human Resource Management notes
Job description (JD)
A job description is a written statement of what the job holder does, how it is done and under what conditions. It describes the job, not the person. Its main contents are:
- Job identification: job title, code, department and location.
- Job summary: a short statement of why the job exists.
- Duties and responsibilities: the main tasks and how often they are done.
- Relationships: whom the job holder reports to, supervises and works with.
- Working conditions: environment, hours, travel and hazards.
- Machines, tools and materials used, and performance standards (KRAs).
Job specification (JS)
A job specification states the minimum acceptable human qualities needed to do the job well. It describes the person, not the job: education, experience, skills, training, physical abilities such as eyesight, mental abilities, personality traits and attitudes. It may separate essential qualifications from desirable ones.
| Basis | Job description | Job specification |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Duties, tasks and conditions of a job | Qualities needed in the job holder |
| Focus | The job | The person |
| Contents | Title, summary, duties, relationships, working conditions | Education, experience, skills, physical and personal traits |
| Used for | Job evaluation, appraisal, orientation, pay fixation | Recruitment, selection, training |
| Nature | Factual and descriptive | Sets minimum standards for selection |

Business example: credit analyst at an NBFC
JD: Job title, Credit Analyst, reporting to the Credit Manager. Duties: analyse loan applications, study financial statements and bank statements, check the CIBIL score, prepare a credit appraisal note and monitor the portfolio. Conditions: office-based, with field visits twice a week.
JS: MBA (Finance) or CA Inter; one to three years in credit; knowledge of ratio analysis and Excel; good report writing; attention to detail and integrity.
What comes next on the page
The same page moves on to job evaluation: the systematic process of finding the relative worth of jobs so that a fair and consistent pay structure can be built. It rates the job, not the job holder, and it uses the job description as its starting point.

Each comes with its year, key elements and a merits and demerits table you can reproduce in the exam.
Do the MFA-114 notes have numericals?
Yes, five worked illustrations. Unit II has the work-study method for manpower demand, a Markov analysis of staff movement and point-rating job evaluation that turns points into pay. Unit III has training ROI using Phillips' fifth level and the paired comparison count N(N − 1) ÷ 2. Each shows the formula, the working and how to read the result.
