Scheme: MBA (FA) scheme and syllabus, w.e.f. 2021-22 academic session | Applies to: batches admitted 2021-22 onwards | Verified against: MBA (Financial Analysis) Scheme and Syllabus 2021-22 onwards (ipu.ac.in)
MFA-117 Communication in Organizations at a glance: GGSIPU MBA (Financial Analysis) Sem 1 credits, units and exam pattern
| Code and title | MFA-117 Communication in Organizations |
|---|---|
| Course and semester | MBA (Financial Analysis), First Semester |
| Category and credits | Ability Enhancement, 3 credits (scheme: L 2, T/P 2) |
| Marks | 100: 50 internal + 50 end-term (scheme rule for theory courses) |
| Internal 50 split | Class Test I 15, Class Test II 15, assignments, presentation, viva, GD or class participation 20 |
| End-term pattern | Not printed in the official PDF; the notes label questions 2.5 Marks and 12.5 Marks |
| Applies to | Batches admitted 2021-22 onwards |
| Units and hours | 4 units: 12 + 12 + 8 + 10 = 42 hours |
| Paired lab | None (MFA-119 is the lab for MFA-107) |
One mismatch in the official PDF: the Sem 1 scheme table prints MFA-117 as L 2, T/P 2, Credits 3, while its syllabus page prints L-2, T/P-1, Credits-3. This page follows the scheme table; the credits are 3 either way.
MFA-117 is the only Ability Enhancement paper among the GGSIPU MBA (Financial Analysis) Semester 1 papers, so it tests letters, speeches and presentation skills rather than numbers.

Paralanguage and chronemics in business speaking: excerpt from page 43 of the MFA-117 notes
Excerpt from page 43
Paralanguage
Paralanguage ("para" means beside) is the vocal but non-verbal part of speech. It is about how something is said, not what is said. The sentence "You have done a great job" can sound like real praise or like sarcasm, and only the voice tells the listener which one you meant.
The elements of paralanguage
- Tone: the attitude or emotion in the voice, such as friendly, angry, sarcastic or confident.
- Pitch: how high or low the voice is. A high pitch can show excitement or nervousness; a low pitch suggests authority.
- Volume: too loud sounds aggressive, too soft sounds weak.
- Rate: about 120 to 160 words a minute is ideal. Faster sounds nervous and unclear; slower becomes boring.
- Pauses: short breaks give emphasis and time to think.
- Stress: extra force on one word changes the meaning. "I did not say he stole the money" and "I did not say he stole the money" say two different things.
- Vocal fillers: too many "um", "like", "you know" or "basically" cut your credibility.
- Articulation: clear sounds and correct pronunciation signal professionalism.
Time (chronemics)
Chronemics is the study of how the use of time sends messages. In business, time signals respect, status, priority and professionalism, often more loudly than words do.
- Punctuality: arriving on time shows respect and reliability; coming late can suggest carelessness or a display of power.
- Response time: a quick reply to an email or a customer complaint shows the matter is important; a delay says it is low priority.
- Time given: when a senior spends more time with someone, that person feels valued.
- Monochronic and polychronic cultures: Edward T. Hall described monochronic cultures (USA, Germany, Japan) that do one thing at a time and keep strict schedules, and polychronic cultures (India, Latin America, the Middle East) that handle many things at once and put relationships ahead of schedules. Knowing the difference prevents misunderstandings in global deals.
- Deadlines in finance: filing dates, the T+1 settlement cycle and audit timelines turn time management into a form of professional communication.

How to write MFA-117 answers: drafted letters, labelled diagrams and 12.5-mark theory answers
A communication paper rewards format as much as content, and these GGSIPU MBA (Financial Analysis) Sem 1 Communication in Organizations notes are built around that. Their exam tips point to four habits, and each is shown in the book with a worked draft you can copy into your own answer style.
1. Draw first, then explain. For the process of communication, draw Figure 1.6 with sender, encoding, message, channel, decoding, receiver, feedback and noise, give each a one-line example, and name two models (Shannon and Weaver, Berlo's SMCR). End with the point that feedback completes the process.
2. Barriers always come with gateways. List the six groups of barriers, then add a short section on how to overcome them. The notes give 14 gateways, from clarifying ideas to follow-up.
3. For the 7 C's, examples carry the marks. Write a definition, draw Figure 2.3, then give each C two or three rules and one before-and-after line, like this one for Courtesy:
| Discourteous | Courteous |
|---|---|
| You have failed to pay your EMI again. | Our records show that your EMI due on 5 October is still pending. Kindly arrange the payment at the earliest. |
Worked example: rewriting a discourteous line (from page 21)
- Discourteous
- You have failed to pay your EMI again.
- Courteous
- Our records show that your EMI due on 5 October is still pending. Kindly arrange the payment at the earliest.
4. Letters and resumes need the full layout. Write the cover letter in full block format with reference, date, inside address, subject line and close, then the resume in combination format, using fictitious names as the specimens on pages 24 to 34 do.
For non-verbal communication, cover all five syllabus items with two business examples each and draw Hall's space zones. For ethics and law, write two separate sections and name the Indian Acts correctly, such as the IT Act, 2000 and the DPDP Act, 2023. Practise this format on GGSIPU MBA (Financial Analysis) important questions.
MFA-117 communication notes FAQs
How do I get the full MFA-117 notes?
Tap "Get Full Notes" and send the pre-filled WhatsApp message to 9899436384. The full MFA-117 notes come only as a printed book; they are not available as a PDF. Delivery takes a maximum of 5 to 7 days, and the exact time depends on your location.
Do the MFA-117 notes follow the current MBA (FA) syllabus?
Yes. The notes are mapped to the MBA (Financial Analysis) scheme and syllabus that applies from the 2021-22 academic session, published on ipu.ac.in. Every topic in its four units, from directions of communication in Unit 1 to ethical and legal issues in Unit 4, has a matching section; the syllabus map above gives the page for each.
What is the passing mark for MFA-117?
MFA-117 is marked out of 100: 50 internal assessment and 50 in the University's end-term written exam, as the scheme states for theory courses. The MBA (FA) scheme PDF does not print a pass percentage, so this page does not give one. For minimum marks, end-term rules and re-appear, check Ordinance 11 on ipu.ac.in or your institute's exam cell.
Which MFA-117 unit has the most drafting practice?
Unit 2, Written Communication and Application of Communication. It runs 19 pages and holds 9 of the 11 specimens: two request letters, two good news letters, two persuasive letters including a collection letter, a sales letter, a cover letter and a resume. It also has the most long-answer questions, 9 of 30, so give it the most writing practice.
Is Skype still part of MFA-117 Unit 3?
Yes. The official MFA-117 syllabus still names "Video-conferencing and Skype" in Unit 3, so write about it. The notes explain that Skype, launched in 2003, closed in May 2025 after Microsoft moved users to Teams, and then apply the same voice-over-internet ideas to Teams, Zoom and Meet, covering its types, advantages, limitations and meeting etiquette in full.
Are the MFA-117 notes written for finance students?
Yes. MFA-117 is general communication theory, but these notes use finance cases throughout: a listed company's results announcement, a home-loan sanction letter, a SIP sales letter with the mutual fund risk line, virtual AGMs, insider-trading rules on price-sensitive information and SEBI's finfluencer limits. The examples stay close to the work an MBA (FA) student will do after placement.
