Before diving deeper, here's everything you need to know immediately about this BA Honours in Hindi program.

BAHDH is IGNOU's three-year honours degree in Hindi under the Choice Based Credit System, which IGNOU adopted at undergraduate level from the January 2020 session. Honours means Hindi carries 108 of the 148 credits: 84 credits from 14 core courses and 24 credits from four discipline specific electives.

The remaining 40 credits come from two ability enhancement courses, two skill enhancement courses and four generic electives in sociology, gender studies and psychology. This is why BAHDH differs from a general BA, where Hindi is only one of several subjects.

IGNOU counts one credit as 30 hours of study, which includes reading the blocks, writing assignments and attending counselling sessions. A six-credit BHDC course therefore needs about 180 hours, and a four-credit course about 120 hours.

Year two is the heaviest, at 28 credits per semester. If you work full time, the programme guide allows you to take fewer courses in a year, for example 30 credits, and complete the rest within the six-year maximum.

BHDC-103 moves from Amir Khusro and Vidyapati through Kabir, Jayasi, Surdas, Tulsidas, Rahim and Mirabai to Bihari, Ghananand, Raskhan and Nazir Akbarabadi. BHDC-104 then covers Bharatendu, Hariaudh, Maithilisharan Gupt and the four Chhayavad poets: Prasad, Nirala, Pant and Mahadevi Verma.

BHDC-105 takes you past Chhayavad to Nagarjun, Kedarnath Agrawal, Dinkar, Agyeya, Raghuvir Sahay, Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena and Kedarnath Singh. BHDC-106 and BHDC-107 cover Indian poetics (Ras, Alankar, Dhvani, Vakrokti) and Western theory from Plato and Aristotle to T.S. Eliot.

In fiction, BHDC-109 sets five novels: Nirmala, Tyagpatra, Manas ka Hans, Mrignayani and Aapka Bunty. BHDC-111 includes Andher Nagari, Skandgupta and Madhavi, plus one-act plays by Vishnu Prabhakar, Jagdishchandra Mathur and Ramkumar Verma. The BHDE-143 elective is devoted to Premchand, including Sevasadan and Karbala.

Every BAHDH course has two parts. Tutor Marked Assignments carry 30 per cent of the final result and the Term End Examination (TEE) carries 70 per cent. You need at least 35 per cent in each part separately, so a strong assignment score cannot make up for a failed TEE.

IGNOU holds the TEE twice a year, in June and December. Because registration is yearly, the TEE for first and second semester courses is taken together at the end of year one, and the same pattern repeats in years two and three. A failed course can be taken again at the next June or December TEE.

Submit each assignment before its deadline. The programme guide states that a learner who has not submitted the assignment for a course cannot appear in that course's TEE, and a TEE result taken without it is cancelled.

Admission is fully online through the IGNOU Samarth portal. Keep your ABC ID (APAAR) and DEB ID ready before you start, because distance learners need both.

Step 1: Open ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in and register as a fresh learner with your email ID and mobile number.

Step 2: Choose Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Hindi, code BAHDH, from the undergraduate programme list.

Step 3: Enter your details exactly as printed on your 10+2 marksheet, then select your Regional Centre and Study Centre.

Step 4: Upload your photograph, signature, 10+2 marksheet, identity proof and category certificate if applicable, within the file size limits shown on the portal.

Step 5: Pay the first-year fee online and save the confirmation. IGNOU confirms admission and issues your enrolment number after document verification.

BAHDH suits you if you enjoy close reading of Hindi poetry and prose, want Hindi as your main subject for three years, and can study on your own with the course blocks and a few counselling sessions.

Think twice if you studied Hindi only up to Class 10 or find long Hindi texts hard to read, because every core course, assignment and exam is in Hindi. If you want Hindi alongside other subjects, a multidisciplinary BA may fit better.

It is also not a media production course. BHDC-113 covers the literary journalism of magazines such as Saraswati and Dharmyug, which means the history of Hindi journals rather than newsroom skills.

School teaching: BAHDH plus a B.Ed is the usual route to becoming a Hindi teacher, followed by the relevant central or state teacher eligibility test.

College teaching: an MA in Hindi and UGC NET are needed for Assistant Professor posts, which start at Level 10 of the UGC pay scale (Rs 57,700 basic pay).

Civil services: UPSC and many state PCS exams offer Hindi literature as an optional subject, and BAHDH covers much of that syllabus ground.

Translation and official Hindi: BHDC-114 Prayojanmoolak Hindi teaches office noting, drafting and technical terminology, a useful base for translation work and a later postgraduate diploma in translation.

Writing and publishing: Hindi content writing, editing and proofreading roles value the reading depth this degree builds.

Go to ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in when admissions open. Verify you're on the official IGNOU site.

Step 2: Create Registration

Click "Fresh Admission" and register with your email and mobile number. OTP verification required.

Step 3: Fill Personal Details

Fill ALL details exactly as on your 12th certificate. Name, date of birth - everything must match perfectly.

Step 4: Select Program

Select "Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Hindi" (BAHHD) from the program list. Triple-check your selection.

Step 5: Choose Centers

Choose a regional center and a study center near your location.

Step 6: Upload Documents
