The ONR 001 Solved Guess Paper gives you 19 solved questions covering all four units of Introduction to Water Harvesting, with diagrams, word targets and a six-session frequency grid.
1. What You Get in the ONR 001 Solved Guess Paper
Most ONR 001 learners are not from a science or agriculture background. Many are working people, teachers or panchayat staff who joined CWHM out of real interest in water. The book is packed with figures, acronyms and scheme names, and that is where marks slip away. This guess paper turns that material into answers you can actually write in the exam.
Every answer follows the same exam-tested flow:
- It opens with the book definition.
- It then gives four to eight headed points.
- A diagram follows wherever the question asks for one.
- It closes with a two-line conclusion.
Each question also carries a priority tag (HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW), the block and unit it comes from, and the sessions in which it last appeared. If you are preparing more than one course this term, our full range of IGNOU Solved Guess Paper titles follows the same format.
The file ends with three short rule boxes: the exam pattern, what not to prepare, and what examiners want to see. The "what not to prepare" box alone can save you a day. For example, it tells you to learn only the main heads of the long village survey format, not every line of it.
2. Five Solved Sample Questions from ONR 001
These five answers are copied from the paid file without edits, so you can check the language, depth and diagrams before you order. They come from four different units, so together they show how the whole file reads.
Institutional arrangement for watershed projects
Question: Explain the institutional arrangement for effective implementation of watershed projects in the country with the help of a neat block diagram.
Institutional arrangements at central, state, district, village and project level agencies including Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) are of paramount importance for effective management of watershed development projects.
The set-up works at the national, state, district and village levels. The full file carries a block diagram of the chain from NRAA down to the WDT.
National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA)
- It is the nodal agency (main coordinating body) at the central level.
- It helps in budget allocation and the smooth flow of funds to the DWDUs.
- It links the different ministries doing watershed work.
State Level Nodal Agency (SLNA)
- It oversees all watershed projects in the state.
- It prepares perspective and strategic (long-term) plans.
- It sets up monitoring and evaluation.
District Watershed Development Unit (DWDU)
- It oversees watershed projects in each district, with separate accounts.
- It works with the District Planning Committee.
- It identifies the Project Implementing Agencies.
Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs)
- The Zilla Parishad coordinates schemes, reviews progress and settles disputes.
- Intermediate Panchayats help in planning and give technical guidance.
Project Implementation Agency (PIA) and Watershed Development Team (WDT)
- The PIA includes line departments, research bodies, Intermediate Panchayats and Voluntary Organisations.
- It guides the Gram Panchayat in making the watershed plan.
- Each PIA is supported by a WDT of at least four experts, and at least one member must be a woman.
Conclusion: Each level supports the level below it. Funds move down and documents move up, and this chain is what makes watershed projects succeed.
The watershed concept and its components
Question: (a) Define watershed. Describe the concept of watershed with the help of a diagram. (b) What are the different components of watershed management? Explain with a flow diagram.
(a) The watershed concept
Watershed is entire geographic unit of particular land from where rainwater as run off is drained out from ridges along the slopes of land to single particular point outlet or common drain point.
The full file carries a diagram showing the ridge line, drainage lines and single outlet.
- Ideal planning unit: It is the best unit for conserving soil, water and biodiversity.
- Ridge to outlet: It covers all land from the ridge line to the outlet of the nala, not just farm land.
- Single window approach: All problems of the area are handled in one place.
- Ongoing process: Plans are revised when new challenges arise.
(b) Components of watershed management
The watershed management is rational utilization and conservation of land, water and biodiversity of natural resources without further deterioration of environment.
- Soil and water conservation: Proper land use and protecting land from damage.
- Water harvesting: Conserving water for farm use.
- Improving productivity: Maintaining soil fertility and raising crop yield.
- Drainage and flood control: Proper water management for drainage and flood protection.
People's participation, from planning to implementation, runs through all four components.
Dark areas and ITK water harvesting structures
Question: (a) Define 'dark area' with respect to groundwater extraction. List the states where groundwater depletion is alarming. How does rainwater harvesting help recharge aquifers? (b) What does ITK stand for? Explain any four water harvesting structures used in India.
(a) Dark areas and groundwater depletion
The areas where groundwater development is more than 90% (the ratio of groundwater withdrawal and recharge is more than 0.9) are categorized as 'dark' areas.
- Meaning: No further groundwater development should be done, because recharge is far below withdrawal.
- Alarming states: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Delhi and Haryana.
- Scale: About 60% of blocks in Punjab and 40% in Haryana have turned dark.
- Causes: Many private tube wells, the water-hungry wheat-paddy rotation, and free electricity for farm pumps in Punjab.
- Role of rainwater harvesting: Runoff is diverted to recharge aquifers, dug wells store monsoon water, and roof water harvesting recharges aquifers in cities.
(b) ITK structures
ITK stands for Indigenous Traditional Knowledge.
ITK is based on common sense and wisdom of local people of area.
- Tanka: An underground, kund-type structure in the Rajasthan desert that stores rainwater for drinking by people and livestock.
- Khadin (dhora): A 100-300 m earthen embankment in Jaisalmer that harvests runoff for farming.
- Johad: A small earthen check dam in Rajasthan that improves groundwater recharge.
- Kund or Kundi: A well in the Thar Desert fed by a saucer-shaped catchment, used for drinking water.
- Bandhara: A check dam across rivers in Maharashtra that irrigates sugarcane and controls floods.
Water stress and water scarcity
Question: (a) Define water stress and water scarcity. What are the causes, effects and solutions of water scarcity? (b) Why is water scarcity a concern in urban areas? Explain the water problems in the extreme arid conditions of India.
(a) Definitions, causes and solutions
Water Scarcity: When per capita annual water availability is less than 1000 m³, it is considered to be condition of water scarcity. Water Stress: When per capita annual water availability is around 1700 m³, it is considered to be condition of water stress.
The full file carries a bar chart of per capita water availability in India from 1951 to 2050.
- Causes: Growing population, uneven rainfall, groundwater overexploitation and polluted rivers.
- Effects: It can hurt economic development and human health, and it leads to water disputes.
- Solutions: Rainwater harvesting, recycling and re-use, minor irrigation and pollution control.
(b) Urban areas and extreme arid conditions
Urban areas:
- Migration from villages keeps pushing demand up.
- Almost all big cities lack enough potable water.
- Rivers, lakes and ponds are polluted and unfit for use.
Extreme arid conditions:
- In Jaisalmer and Bikaner, even drinking water is not available.
- Nomadic people move to Haryana and Punjab with their livestock in summer.
- In Bhiwani, women fetched water from 4-5 km away before lift irrigation came.
- Rainfall is only 150-500 mm, falling in 3-5 storms, and evapo-transpiration is very high.
Water pollution and its treatment
Question: (a) What are the types and causes of water pollution? (b) Explain in detail the process of treatment of water pollution.
(a) Types and causes
Water Pollution: Water contaminated due to impurities and chemical rendering it unfit for use.
Surface water pollution:
- Pollutants may be physical, chemical or biological. Suspended material is a physical pollutant.
- Rivers receive human, animal and untreated industrial waste. Paper, food, tanning and metal units add more.
- Nitrates and phosphates spoil lakes and tanks, and ammonia harms fish.
Sub-surface water pollution:
- Fertilisers, pesticides and weedicides leach down with water.
- Industrial effluents and sewage reduce dissolved oxygen.
- Excess arsenic, fluoride and iron make water unfit to drink.
- Detergents cause foam, and organic waste causes algae and clogging.
(b) Five stages of treatment
- Preliminary treatment: Grinders chop rags, bar screens catch large particles and grit channels remove gravel.
- Primary settling basin: Organic matter settles, light matter is skimmed off and a scraper collects the sludge.
- Secondary treatment: Air is supplied so that micro-organisms can break down the waste.
- Removal of N and P: Bacteria change nitrogen to nitrate, and phosphorus is removed with ferric chloride or aluminium sulphate.
- Disinfection: Chlorine or ozone kills pathogens, and sodium sulphite reduces chlorine toxicity.
The full file carries a flow chart of all five stages.

7. How to Use the ONR 001 Solved Guess Paper
Learn the HIGH-priority questions first, practise each diagram once by hand, and revise the definitions every day.
That order alone covers most of what the paper asks. Read each answer twice. Then close the file and write only the headed points from memory.
Numbers win marks in this paper. Examiners look for 4% of the world's fresh water serving 16% of its population, 1700 m³ for stress and 1000 m³ for scarcity. They also look for 135% irrigation intensity and 35-40% efficiency. Keep these on one sticky note and read it daily.
Finally, write the full form of every acronym at least once in each answer. Losing a mark because you wrote "WDT" without spelling it out is avoidable. The file flags each acronym for you.
8. Seven-Day Revision Plan
One unit-cluster a day for six days, then a full two-hour mock on day seven, is enough for a certificate-level paper.
| Day | Focus | Must-practise item |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Water availability and demand (Q13, Q15) | Per capita chart and the 2000 to 2050 sector table |
| Day 2 | Irrigation and pollution (Q16, Q17) | Fresh water pie diagrams and the treatment flow chart |
| Day 3 | Rainwater harvesting and laws (Q10, Q12) | State-wise limits for Delhi, MP, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan |
| Day 4 | Dark areas, ITK and history (Q11, Q14) | Five ITK structures with their regions |
| Day 5 | Watershed concept and programmes (Q6, Q7, Q9) | Watershed diagram and the POWER table |
| Day 6 | Institutions, survey and PRA (Q1 to Q5, Q8) | NRAA-to-WDT block diagram from memory |
| Day 7 | Short notes and mock (Q18, Q19) | Any five questions in two hours, timed |

10. ONR 001 FAQs
What is included in the ONR 001 solved guess paper?
The file has 19 exam-style questions with full answers, spread over 21 pages and both blocks of the course. Each answer starts with the book definition, follows with headed points and ends with a short conclusion. You also get labelled diagrams, a what-not-to-prepare list, word targets per mark and a topic frequency grid covering six term-end papers from December 2023 to June 2026.
Which sessions were analysed for the guess paper?
Six term-end papers were analysed: December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025, December 2025 and June 2026. Every topic in the file is tagged by how often it appeared across these sessions. IGNOU holds ONR 001 exams only in June and December, so the grid follows that same calendar, and the file is aimed at the December 2026 term-end exam.
What is the exam pattern of ONR 001?
The paper runs for 2 hours and carries 50 marks. Eight questions are set and you attempt any five, each worth 10 marks. Most questions split into parts such as 5 + 5 or 2 + 3 + 5, and one question is usually short notes, where you pick four and write about 75 words each. Neat diagrams are expected wherever a question asks for them.
Which topics are most important for ONR 001?
Benchmark and natural resource survey appeared in five of the six papers analysed, and the roles of NRAA, SLNA, DWDU, PRIs, PIA and WDT also came five times. Water scarcity and stress, dark areas, water pollution, institutional arrangement and groundwater in irrigation each appeared four times. Start with these, then move to the medium-priority topics listed in the file.
How many answers can I see before ordering?
Five full answers are open on this page: institutional arrangement, watershed concept and components, dark area with ITK structures, water scarcity and stress, and water pollution with its treatment. Together they cover all four units, so you can judge the language, structure and diagrams. The remaining 14 questions and answers come in the complete file you receive on WhatsApp.
Is the guess paper written from the IGNOU study material?
Yes. Every answer is written only from the IGNOU study material for Block 1 (Basic Concepts) and Block 2 (Watershed Management), in simple English. Figures such as 1700 m³ for water stress, 135% irrigation intensity and the state rainwater harvesting rules come straight from the book, so what you write in the exam matches what examiners expect to read.
Can I write the ONR 001 exam in Hindi?
The question paper is bilingual, printed in English and Hindi, and you can answer in the medium you chose at admission. This guess paper is written in English. Hindi-medium learners can still use its structure, points, numbers and diagrams, since the definitions and facts stay the same in both mediums. Message us if you need help with a specific answer.
