Take Question 9, "Discuss the major features of ethnic conflicts in the contemporary world with example". It's a 10-marker, 400 words. Most students summarise one case and lose marks. Here's how examiners actually mark it.
Step 1, Open with a clean conceptual line (about 1.5 marks). Ethnic conflict is organised violence between groups defined by shared identity markers (language, religion, race, ancestry) where group identity is mobilised politically against the state or other groups. Note that ethnic conflict is rarely "ancient" but constructed through modern political mobilisation.
Step 2, List five defining features (about 4 marks, 0.8 each). Use numbered points: identity-based mobilisation rather than ideological, mix of grievance and elite manipulation, often exploits weak state capacity, frequently involves diaspora financing and transnational networks, tends to spill across borders generating refugees. One sentence per feature.
Step 3, Build two named cases in detail (about 3 marks, 1.5 each). Rwanda 1994 (Hutu-Tutsi, around 800,000 killed in 100 days, role of Radio Mille Collines, failure of international response).
