MEC 107 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a 17-page revision file built for students sitting the term-end examination in International Trade and Development, the six-credit Semester III course of the IGNOU MA Economics (MAEC) programme. It carries 14 questions, each with a written-out model answer, and each one chosen because the topic has actually surfaced in a recent question paper rather than because it looked important in the textbook.

The honest position on any guess paper is this: nobody can hand you the 2026 question paper in advance. What can be done is arithmetic. Read four sessions of past papers side by side, count what repeats, notice what has gone quiet for two sessions, and a fairly narrow band of topics accounts for most of the 100 marks. That count is what this file is built on, and the frequency table further down shows you the working rather than asking you to take it on trust.

Five complete sample questions with their answers are reproduced on this page. Read them, judge the writing for yourself, and then decide whether the remaining nine are worth asking for.

MEC 107 Solved Guess Paper 2026: What Is Inside the File

The file is a 17-page PDF containing 14 questions with complete written answers, split as six 20-mark questions and eight 12-mark questions, plus a 25-topic frequency table and a page of examiner-facing writing rules.

Each question in the file is presented the same way, and that consistency is deliberate. You get the priority tag, the block and section it belongs to, the sessions in which it last appeared, the question phrased in IGNOU's own exam language, the mark split where one exists, and then the answer itself.

The answers are not bullet-point summaries. A 20-mark answer runs to roughly 450 words with an opening definition, two or three labelled sub-sections, a numbered list of the points an examiner is scanning for, and a short evaluative closing line. A 12-mark answer runs to roughly 300 words on the same structure. That word budget is not arbitrary; it is what you can realistically write in the time the paper allows.

Where a topic has a diagram attached to it in the IGNOU book, the answer names the diagram and explains what each labelled point on it means, so you can redraw it from memory in the hall. Bhagwati's free trade demonstration, the small-country and large-country tariff cases, and the production possibility frontier used in the Solow application are all handled this way.

Five Sample Questions with Solutions from the MEC 107 Guess Paper

Five of the 14 questions are reproduced below with their answers so you can judge the quality before buying; the remaining nine are in the full file.

These five were picked to span both mark bands and five different blocks, so you are seeing a fair cross-section rather than the five easiest. Every one of them is tagged HIGH, meaning it appeared in at least three of the four sessions analysed.

Free Trade versus No Trade and Ricardian Theory

(a) Why is free trade between two countries considered better than no trade? Explain with the help of a diagram. (b) Using the Ricardian theory of international trade as a framework, illustrate how nations derive benefits from engaging in trade.

Answer (extract)

When there are no tariffs or trade restrictions, it is a situation of free trade, and domestic factor and product prices get equalised with international prices. Free trade is superior to autarchy under a specific set of conditions: perfect competition, no government interference, no transport costs, a small country with no monopoly power, fixed factor supply, and a production possibility curve concave to the origin.

The demonstration is adapted from Bhagwati. AB is the home country's production possibility curve. Without trade, the domestic price ratio is line DD and point C is the joint production and consumption equilibrium. Once trade begins, the international price ratio EE runs parallel to DD and becomes the consumption possibility curve.

Production shifts to point R where EE is tangent to the production possibility curve, and consumption shifts to C1 where EE touches a higher community indifference curve. Production is optimised at R, consumption at C1, and the country sits on a higher indifference curve than it could reach alone.

Part (b) turns to Ricardo's 1817 Principles of Political Economy and Taxation. A nation gains by exporting the goods in which its comparative advantage in productivity is greatest and importing those in which it is least.

The numerical illustration in the full answer works through two countries with 200 labourers each. It shows that Country A holds an absolute advantage in both wheat and rice yet still gains by specialising in rice, then tracks both countries' post-exchange baskets to prove the gain is mutual.

Sample 2HIGHBlock 220 marksLast appeared December 2025, June 2025, June 2024

Intra-Industry Trade

What factors prompted the development of intra-industry trade? Explain. How does this theory contribute to our understanding of international trade?

Answer (extract)

Intra-industry trade means the simultaneous export and import of products that are very close substitutes for each other in terms of factor inputs and consumption. Interest in it took hold from the early 1960s, after the European Economic Community was formed and two-way flows within the same industry became too large to treat as a statistical oddity.

Five factors drive it. Economies of scale, because fixed costs attach to each variety, so a plant specialises in one variety and imports the rest. Product differentiation, which pushes intra-industry trade in final consumer goods. Imperfect competition, since scale economies internal to the firm cannot sit inside a perfectly competitive model.

The last two are trade liberalisation, which rationalises product lines, and intermediate products, where specialisation at component level produces two-way flows in parts rather than finished goods.

The full answer then explains why a separate theory was needed at all: Grubel and Lloyd documented the evidence in 1975, but it stayed a phenomenon in search of a theory until the late 1970s, because the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson model could not account for heavy trade between industrial nations with near-identical endowments. It closes with the horizontal and vertical types set out in a comparison table.

Tariff, Volume of Trade and Terms of Trade

Explore the effects of tariff on the volume of trade and terms of trade for a small country and a large country. Explain with the help of a diagram.

Answer (extract)

A tariff touches every sector: the composition of production and the allocation of resources both change, so the volume of trade changes with them. Whether the terms of trade also move depends entirely on the size of the country, and that split is the whole question.

For a small country, the domestic price of the importable rises by the full amount of the tariff while the international price does not budge. The import-competing sector expands, the export sector contracts, and higher domestic prices push consumption away from the importable.

Exports and imports both fall, so the volume of trade falls, and the country loses on two fronts at once: resources move towards a comparative-disadvantage good, and consumers pay more. Terms of trade are unchanged, so the tariff is simply welfare-reducing.

For a large country the arithmetic changes. Reduced import demand pulls down world demand for that commodity enough to lower its international price. The export price stays put while the import price falls, the international price ratio moves, and the terms of trade improve for the country imposing the tariff. The full answer carries the diagram reference and the closing comparison line examiners look for.

Sample 4HIGHBlock 412 marksLast appeared December 2025, December 2024, June 2024

The Impossible Trinity

What do you understand by the impossible trinity? Why is it difficult for countries to circumvent the impossible trinity?

Answer (extract)

The macroeconomic policy trilemma, or impossible trinity, holds that a country must choose between free capital mobility, exchange rate management and an independent monetary policy. Only two of the three can hold at once. The idea traces to the early 1960s work of Robert Mundell and J. Marcus Fleming, which is why it also travels under the names unholy, irreconcilable and inconsistent trinity.

The reason it cannot be circumvented is easiest to see with numbers. Suppose the world interest rate is 5 per cent and a central bank tries to hold its own rate at 2 per cent. Investors sell the low-yielding domestic currency to buy the higher-yielding foreign one, and the home currency comes under depreciation pressure. If the country also wants open capital flows, its only defence is to sell foreign currency reserves. Reserves are finite. Once they run out, the currency depreciates anyway.

The full answer closes with two country examples, China and Britain, showing which leg of the triangle each one chose to give up and what it got in return.

Sample 5HIGHBlock 712 marksLast appeared December 2025, June 2025, December 2024, June 2024

Environmental Standards, Logistics and Trade

Examine the impact of environmental standards and logistics cost on the location of production and on international trade.

Answer (extract)

The linkages between trade and environment run in both directions. As activity shifts from agriculture to manufacturing, exploitation of renewable and non-renewable resources rises sharply, and environmental standards start to influence where production physically sits.

Four ideas carry the answer. The Pollution Haven Hypothesis says degradation follows FDI into pollution-intensive sectors, so production relocates towards weak-standard countries. The Factor Endowment Hypothesis says a country specialises in its abundant resource, so a capital-rich country may end up specialising in dirty capital-intensive industries. These two pull in opposite directions, and saying so explicitly is worth marks.

Race to the bottom is the third. It describes jurisdictions competing on lax rules, where a weak standard works as an implicit subsidy by holding the marginal cost of abatement below the marginal damage from pollution.

The fourth idea is the one most students miss: rising quality demand from export partners, ISO 14001 adoption for instance, can cancel the race-to-the-bottom pull entirely, and a strong standard becomes optimal policy wherever abatement cost exceeds marginal environmental damage.

That is five of the fourteen. The nine that remain cover Heckscher-Ohlin, the technological gap model with its Product Life Cycle extension, regional trading agreements, the 2008 financial crisis, protectionist policies, capital account convertibility, balance of payments components, the Mundell-Fleming model and the Solow application to trade and growth. If the writing above reads the way you want your own answer sheet to read, message us on WhatsApp at 9899436384 for the complete file.

Alongside the questions the file carries a briefing page on the exam pattern, a short list of what is not worth over-preparing, and a page on what examiners actually reward. If you are building a wider revision set, our full IGNOU Solved Guess Paper collection covers the other courses in your semester on the same format.

How This MEC 107 Solved Guess Paper Was Built from Past Papers

Five years of MEC 107 question papers were reviewed, and the four most recent sessions, June 2024 through to December 2025, were mapped question by question into the frequency table that drives every priority tag in the file.

The longer historical read was used to establish which topics belong to the course's permanent core. The four-session close mapping was used to set priorities, because a topic that ran in 2019 and has not been seen since tells you very little about 2026.

The method itself is not complicated. Every question from each of the four papers was reduced to its underlying topic. Those topics were pooled, duplicates merged, and each one ticked against the sessions it appeared in. Twenty-five distinct topics came out of that pooling. Ten of them appeared three or four times and became HIGH. Eleven appeared twice and became MEDIUM. Four appeared once and were tagged LOW, which is a polite way of saying keep them as backup and spend your time elsewhere.

One correction worth making, because it comes up constantly: a topic that appeared in the last session is not therefore excluded from the next one. Balance of payments, regional trading agreements and environmental standards each ran in all four sessions we mapped. Recency is not a cooling-off period in this course; frequency is the signal, not absence.

Answers were then written strictly from the IGNOU MEC-107 self-learning material rather than from general economics textbooks, because evaluators mark against the terminology in the course book. If you want to cross-check any answer against the source, IGNOU publishes the complete study material at eGyanKosh, and the past papers themselves are worth reading in their original form. Our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper archive is where most students start that check.

MEC 107 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme for the 2026 Sessions

The MEC 107 term-end paper runs for 3 hours and carries 100 marks, split into Section A where you attempt any two of four questions at 20 marks each, and Section B where you attempt any five of eight questions at 12 marks each.

That structure is confirmed by the official IGNOU question paper. Section A asks for about 700 words per answer and yields 40 marks. Section B asks for about 400 words per answer and yields 60 marks. Section B is therefore where the paper is won or lost, which is why eight of the 14 questions in this file sit in the 12-mark band.

Expected lengthAbout 700 wordsAbout 400 words
Suggested time eachAbout 40 minutesAbout 22 minutes

Two practical notes. First, some questions carry internal splits such as 10 + 10 or 7 + 7 + 6, and the marks tell you how to divide both your time and your word count, so read the split before you start writing.

Second, the same topic does not always sit in the same section across sessions. Free trade versus no trade ran as a 12-mark Section B question in December 2024 and at 20 marks in other sessions, so prepare topics at the fuller length and compress on the day if the paper asks for less.

Three hours across seven answers works out to roughly 25 minutes each with a few minutes spare. That is tight, and it is the real argument for revising from prepared answers rather than from the block PDFs.

Block and Unit Structure of MEC 107 International Trade and Development

MEC 107 is organised into 8 blocks containing 19 units, and this guess paper draws questions from seven of those eight blocks.

Knowing the block map matters because IGNOU builds question papers block-wise. If you can name which block a question came from, you usually also know which two or three concepts the examiner expects to see inside the answer.

Block and unit structure of the IGNOU MEC 107 syllabus, with the questions each block contributes to this guess paper

Block 8India's Foreign Trade: Policy and ChallengesUnit 18 India's Trade Policy; Unit 19 India's Trade: Trends, Composition and ChallengesNo question in this edition; see the note below

Block 8 is the one gap, and it is a deliberate one rather than an oversight. India's Foreign Trade Policy 2023 and India's trade challenges each appeared once in the four sessions mapped, which puts them below the cut-off used for inclusion. They are still worth a read from the course book before you sit the paper.

Block 4 sits at the opposite end: four units, four questions in this file, and by some distance the heaviest scoring block in recent sessions. If your time is short, that is the block to open first.

Students who want the underlying block material rather than solved answers should look at our MEC 107 Study Material section, which follows the same unit ordering as the table above.

MEC 107 Important Questions Ranked by Repeat Rate Across Four Sessions

Ten MEC 107 topics appeared in three or four of the last four sessions and are tagged HIGH, eleven appeared twice and are tagged MEDIUM, and four appeared once and are tagged LOW.

The full 25-row table with session-by-session ticks sits inside the file. What follows is the ranked shortlist, which is genuinely the most useful page for anyone with limited time.

One arithmetic note so the numbers reconcile: ten topics are tagged HIGH in the frequency table, but only nine questions in the file carry a HIGH chip. Question 1 covers two of those ten topics across its parts (a) and (b), because IGNOU has set them together as often as it has set them apart.

HIGH priority MEC 107 important questions

  1. Balance of payments components and the always-balances argument, in all four sessions
  2. Regional trading agreements, characteristics, types and gains, in all four sessions
  3. Environmental standards, logistics cost and trade, in all four sessions
  4. Tariff effects on volume of trade and terms of trade, in three sessions
  5. Capital account convertibility against current account convertibility, in three sessions
  6. Intra-industry trade, drivers and theoretical contribution, in three sessions
  7. Technological gap model and the Product Life Cycle extension, in three sessions
  8. The impossible trinity, in three sessions
  9. Free trade versus no trade with diagram, in three sessions
  10. Ricardian comparative advantage and gains from trade, in two sessions with recent recurrence

MEDIUM priority: prepare after the HIGH list

Heckscher-Ohlin factor endowment theory, gains from trade for large against small countries, protectionist policies, consumption and production externalities, the Mundell-Fleming model, the 2008 global financial crisis, India's contribution in the WTO, multilateral agreements since 1991, the Solow model applied to trade, India's foreign trade challenges, and the Foreign Trade Policy 2023.

LOW priority: read once, do not memorise

Krugman's alternative theory of trade, import quota and effective rate of protection, exchange rate regimes, and international financial markets. Each appeared once across the four sessions. Know the definition and one line of intuition, then move on. Long derivations of the Grubel and Lloyd index and detailed CDO mechanics fall into the same bucket: interesting, and not exam-efficient under time pressure.

Who This IGNOU MEC 107 Guess Paper Is For

This file suits MA Economics students appearing for the MEC 107 term-end examination in June or December 2026 who have limited revision time and want prepared answers rather than raw block material.

It fits you well if you have read the blocks once but cannot write a structured 450-word answer under time pressure. It fits you well if you are a working student and the honest calendar available to you is two weeks rather than two months. It fits you if you have failed or skipped a previous attempt and want to see what a passing answer sheet actually looks like before you write another one.

It fits you less well if you are aiming at a distinction and want full theoretical depth across all 19 units. A guess paper is a prioritisation tool, not a substitute for the course book, and we would rather say so plainly than sell you the wrong thing.

MEC 107 sits in Semester III of the IGNOU Master of Arts (Economics), MAEC programme and carries six credits. Students taking several papers in the same session usually want the whole semester covered in one go, and our MAEC Guess Paper range is organised programme-wise for exactly that reason.

A Ten-Day Revision Plan for MEC 107 Using This Guess Paper

Ten days is enough for MEC 107 if you spend the first six on the ten HIGH priority questions, days seven and eight on MEDIUM topics, and the last two writing full answers under a clock.

The plan below assumes about three hours a day. Adjust the hours, keep the order.

Suggested ten-day revision schedule for MEC 107 International Trade and Development using the guess paper
DaysFocusWhat to actually do
1 to 2Blocks 1 and 2 HIGH questionsFree trade versus no trade, Ricardo, intra-industry trade, technological gap. Redraw Bhagwati's diagram from memory before moving on.
3 to 4Block 4, the heaviest blockBalance of payments, impossible trinity, capital account convertibility. Learn the three BoP components and the 1994 date cold.
5 to 6Blocks 3, 6 and 7 HIGH questionsTariff small against large country, regional trading agreements, environmental standards. Fix Viner's five stages in order.
7MEDIUM topics, first halfHeckscher-Ohlin with its eight assumptions, protectionism, the 2008 crisis. Definitions and structure only, not full answers.
8MEDIUM topics, second halfMundell-Fleming, Solow with Baldwin, WTO and India. Skim Block 8 once so nothing on the paper is unfamiliar.
9Timed writingWrite two 20-mark answers in 80 minutes by hand. Compare against the file and mark your own gaps.
10Final passRead only the opening definitions, scholar names and dates for all 14 questions. Nothing new on the last day.

One habit is worth more than any of the above: open every answer with the textbook definition and the scholar's name attached to it. Posner in 1961, Vernon in 1966, Ricardo in 1817, Baldwin in 1992, Viner in 1950. Examiners read the first two lines to decide what band an answer is in, and a named attribution in line one does a great deal of work.

MEC 107 Guess Paper: Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the MEC 107 Solved Guess Paper 2026?

The MEC 107 file is a 17-page PDF with 14 questions and complete model answers, six at 20 marks and eight at 12 marks. It also carries a 25-topic frequency table mapped across four sessions, a page on the exam pattern, a short list of topics not worth over-preparing, and a page setting out what examiners reward in International Trade and Development answers.

Is the MEC 107 guess paper valid for both June 2026 and December 2026?

Yes. The MEC 107 file is prepared for both term-end sessions of 2026, because IGNOU sets papers for June and December from the same syllabus and the same block structure. The frequency analysis behind it covers June 2024, December 2024, June 2025 and December 2025, so the priorities hold across both sittings of the year.

How were the MEC 107 important questions selected for this file?

Five years of MEC 107 question papers were reviewed and the four most recent sessions were mapped question by question. Every question was reduced to its underlying topic, duplicates were merged, and 25 distinct topics emerged. Topics appearing three or four times were tagged HIGH, twice MEDIUM, once LOW. The 14 questions in the file come from the HIGH and MEDIUM bands.

How many questions from the MEC 107 guess paper are shown on this page?

Five of the 14 questions are reproduced on this page with substantial extracts from their answers, so you can judge the writing quality before ordering. Those five span Blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 and cover both mark bands. The remaining nine questions, including Heckscher-Ohlin, regional trading agreements and the Mundell-Fleming model, are in the paid file.

Does the MEC 107 International Trade and Development guess paper cover all eight blocks?

It covers seven of the eight blocks. Block 8, India's Foreign Trade Policy and Challenges, has no question in this edition because both of its topics appeared only once across the four sessions analysed. Blocks 1 through 7 all contribute at least one question, and Block 4 on exchange rate and balance of payments contributes four.

Will these MEC 107 important questions definitely appear in the 2026 exam?

No guess paper can promise that, and we will not claim it. What the MEC 107 file gives you is a ranked probability based on four sessions of evidence, with the working shown so you can check it. Ten topics repeated three or four times each. Preparing those first is a sound bet, but it is a bet on frequency, not a leaked paper.

Are the MEC 107 answers written from the official IGNOU study material?

Yes. Every answer in the MEC 107 file is written from the IGNOU self-learning material for International Trade and Development, not from general economics textbooks. That matters because evaluators mark against the course book's own terminology, definitions and scholar attributions. You can cross-check any answer against the block PDFs published on eGyanKosh at any time.

How do I order the IGNOU MEC 107 Guess Paper with answers?

Message 9899436384 on WhatsApp with the course code MEC 107 and the session you are appearing for. This is a paid study material, so you will receive the price and delivery details on that chat before anything is shared. If you are taking several papers, send all your course codes in one message and we will reply about each of them together.
