MEC 101 Solved Guess Paper 2026 carrying 13 exam ready questions with complete written answers for Microeconomic Analysis.
Questions picked after reading six IGNOU term end papers from June 2023 to December 2025, not lifted from any topic list.
Each answer follows the IGNOU marking habit, a precise definition first, numbered points next, then a short evaluative close.
Plain English throughout, so a working student can revise one full 20 mark answer without opening the printed block.
Answer length is matched to the marks, close to 450 words for 20 mark questions and close to 250 words for 12 mark ones.
All eight blocks are represented, from consumer behaviour and producer theory to uncertainty and game theory topics.
Derivations, payoff matrices and diagrams are written out where the examiner wants visible working, not loose description.

MEC 101 is the Microeconomic Analysis course studied in the first semester of the IGNOU Master of Arts (Economics) programme, examined for 100 marks in a three hour term end paper. The box above holds the details students ask for most often before ordering.

What Is Inside the MEC 101 Solved Guess Paper for Microeconomic Analysis

The file holds 13 questions with full written answers, spread across all eight blocks of MEC 101 Microeconomic Analysis, and is prepared for the June 2026 and December 2026 term end examinations. Nothing in it is a heading or a bullet list pretending to be an answer. Every question is written out the way it would appear on the question paper, and the answer under it runs to the length that the marks demand.

Most students who come to us for MEC 101 are not weak in economics. They are short of time. They have the printed blocks sitting at home, roughly a thousand pages of them, and six weeks before the paper. What they need is a shortlist that is honest about what usually gets asked, and answers that can be memorised and reproduced in three hours of writing.

That is the whole design brief for this file. Thirteen questions, arranged by priority. Eight of them marked high priority because they have either repeated across sessions or have skipped one recent session and are due. Five marked medium, kept as backup so that no section of the paper can catch you empty handed.

The answers are written by an economics teacher, not assembled from the block text. Where the concept is mathematical, such as the Slutsky decomposition or the derivation of the expenditure function, the algebra is set out step by step. Where the concept is comparative, such as adverse selection against moral hazard, it is set out as a table first and then explained.

You can look at the syllabus this paper is built on at the official source. The complete MEC-101 self learning material sits on eGyanKosh, the IGNOU digital repository, and the block titles used on this page are taken directly from that listing rather than from any coaching notes.

Sample Questions with Answers from the MEC 101 Guess Paper

Five of the thirteen questions are previewed below so that you can judge the answer quality before paying anything. These previews are shortened. Inside the file each of these runs to its full marked length, with the complete derivations, the remaining properties and the concluding paragraph that examiners look for.

Sample 1HIGHSection A20 marksBlock 1

Expenditure Function, Properties and Duality

Question: Consider a two commodity framework with utility function u(x, y). The consumer minimises expenditure P1x + P2y subject to a utility level U. Define the expenditure function and state its properties, write the basic duality relations, and explain why the substitution matrix is symmetric and negative semi definite.

Answer preview: The expenditure function gives the minimum outlay needed to reach a stated utility level at given prices, written as E(px, py, U) = min {pxx + pyy : u(x, y) ≥ U}. It is increasing in prices and in utility, homogeneous of degree one in prices, and concave in prices. Differentiating it with respect to a price returns the compensated demand for that good, which is Shephard's Lemma.

Duality links it to the indirect utility function through E(px, py, V(px, py, M)) = M, so utility maximisation and expenditure minimisation are two views of one choice problem. The substitution matrix is symmetric because its cross terms are both second order partial derivatives of the same expenditure function, and negative semi definite because a compensated price rise cannot raise the quantity demanded of that good.

Sample 2HIGHSection B12 marksBlock 1

Quasi Concavity of the Utility Function

Question: What do you mean by quasi concavity of the utility function? Describe the various properties of quasi concavity of the utility function.

Answer preview: A utility function is quasi concave when any weighted average of two bundles is at least as good as the worse of the two. Formally, if u(x1, y1) ≥ k and u(x2, y2) ≥ k, then for any λ between 0 and 1 the mixed bundle also yields at least k.

The properties that carry marks are the convexity of upper contour sets, indifference curves that are convex to the origin, a diminishing marginal rate of substitution along each curve, a revealed preference for diversified bundles over extreme ones, and the guarantee that the tangency between budget line and indifference curve gives a genuine maximum. The full answer also handles the relation with concavity, since every concave function is quasi concave but not the reverse.

Sample 3HIGHSection A20 marksBlock 4

Cobweb Model and Market Stability

Question: Critically examine the dynamic equilibrium and stability of a competitive market using the Cobweb Model.

Answer preview: The cobweb model applies where supply reacts to last period's price while demand reacts to the current price, which is why it fits agricultural markets with a production lag. With Dt = a + bPt and St = c + dPt-1, market clearing gives the difference equation Pt = (d/b)Pt-1 + (c − a)/b.

Stability then turns on the absolute value of d divided by b. Below one the path converges and the equilibrium is dynamically stable, which happens when the demand curve is flatter than the supply curve. At exactly one the price cycles forever. Above one the path diverges. The full answer adds the critical evaluation the question asks for, including the naive expectations assumption that producers never learn from past errors.

Sample 4HIGHSection B5 + 5 marksBlock 6

Adverse Selection Against Moral Hazard

Question: Differentiate between adverse selection and moral hazard with suitable examples.

Answer preview: Both arise from asymmetric information, but they sit on opposite sides of the contract. Adverse selection is a hidden information problem that occurs before the contract is signed, so high risk applicants crowd into a health insurance pool that healthy people avoid. Moral hazard is a hidden action problem that occurs after signing, so a driver with comprehensive cover becomes less careful.

The full answer presents a six row comparison table across meaning, cause, timing, the nature of the asymmetry, the main issue and the market effect, then treats each concept separately with its consequences, and closes with the corrective measures examiners expect, screening and risk rated premiums on one side, deductibles and monitoring on the other.

Sample 5MEDIUMSection B5 + 5 marksBlock 2

Homogeneous Against Homothetic Production Function

Question: Differentiate between a homogeneous production function and a homothetic production function. Use the Cobb Douglas form q = Axαyβ for illustration.

Answer preview: A function is homogeneous of degree n when scaling every input by t scales output by tn. Applying this to the Cobb Douglas form gives q' = tα+βq, so the degree of homogeneity is the sum of the exponents, and that sum decides whether returns to scale are constant, increasing or decreasing.

A homothetic function is any monotonic transformation of a homogeneous one, so the shape of the isoquant map survives and the marginal rate of technical substitution still depends only on the input ratio. Squaring the Cobb Douglas function gives a homothetic function that is no longer homogeneous in the strict sense. The point the examiner rewards is the set relation, every homogeneous function is homothetic but not the reverse.

The remaining eight questions, and the unshortened versions of these five, are in the complete file. Send a message on WhatsApp 9899436384 with your enrolment number and MEC 101 to place an enquiry.

How the MEC 101 Important Questions Were Selected from Past Papers

Six term end papers from June 2023 to December 2025 were read question by question, tagged to a syllabus block, and counted, and the 13 questions in this file are the output of that count. No topic entered the list because it sounded important. It entered because the record showed it being asked.

Three signals decided priority. A topic repeating in three or more of the six sessions was marked high. A topic appearing twice was marked medium. A topic that has appeared regularly but has skipped the two most recent sessions was also pushed to high, on the reasoning that setters rotate rather than retire a syllabus area.

That third rule is the one most guess papers ignore, and it is where a shortlist earns its keep. Walrasian dynamic stability is the clearest example in MEC 101. It appeared in June 2024 and December 2024, then went quiet. A frequency count alone would drop it. A rotation reading keeps it near the top for 2026.

If you want to run the same exercise yourself, the raw material is public. Every paper we used is downloadable from the university, and our own sorted archive of each IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper for economics courses is arranged by code and session.

One honest caution. A guess paper narrows revision, it does not replace it. Nobody can promise which four questions will sit in Section A of your paper. What a well built shortlist does is make sure that when you open the question paper, you have prepared answers for more questions than you actually need to attempt.

Sessions are written the way IGNOU writes them, June and December only. If you see a study material advertised for an April or a May session of a term end paper, that is a signal to look elsewhere, because the university does not run those sittings for this programme.

Block Wise Syllabus Coverage of MEC 101 Microeconomic Analysis

MEC 101 Microeconomic Analysis is organised into eight blocks, and every one of them is represented in this guess paper. The block names below are taken from the official IGNOU repository listing for the course, and the topics beside each one are the areas that have actually carried marks in recent term end papers.

Block wise structure of the IGNOU MEC 101 Microeconomic Analysis syllabus with the specific topics from each block that have appeared in recent term end question papers.
BlockBlock titleTopics from this block that have carried marksWeight for 2026
1Consumer BehaviourConsumer equilibrium and its conditions, Walrasian demand derivation, income consumption curve and unit income elasticity, income compensated demand curve, expenditure function and duality, quasi concavity, Slutsky decomposition, inter temporal choiceVery heavy, usually two questions
2Producer BehaviourCost minimising input combination when the ratio of marginal product to input price differs, elasticity of technical substitution, homogeneity and homotheticity of production functions, returns to scale, shape of long run marginal cost when average cost is L shaped, economies of scaleHeavy, reliable short note source
3Price and Output DeterminationLong run equilibrium of firm and industry, whether P equals LMC is sufficient for industry equilibrium, monopoly profit maximising output and equilibrium marginal revenue, excess capacity in monopolistic competition, kinked demand curve, reaction functions and duopoly outputHeavy, appears in most sessions
4General EquilibriumWalrasian price adjustment and dynamic stability, time path of a disequilibrium price, cobweb adjustment with lagged supply, convergent, oscillating and divergent cases, existence and uniqueness of a general equilibrium allocationHigh, and currently due for rotation
5Welfare EconomicsPareto optimality conditions in consumption, production and product mix, the two fundamental welfare theorems, market failure and its causes, Lindahl pricing for public goods, Arrow's impossibility theorem, Rawlsian principles of justice, theory of second bestHigh, one certain Section B slot
6Economics of UncertaintyChoice in uncertain situations, von Neumann Morgenstern expected utility theory, measures of risk aversion, risk pooling through shared gambles, insurance choice, economics of information, adverse selection, moral hazard and efficiency wagesVery high, two slots in recent papers
7Non Cooperative Game Theory INormal form representation, dominant strategy equilibrium against Nash equilibrium and why the two are not the same, computing the set of Nash equilibria from a payoff matrix, prisoner's dilemma and the Pareto ranking of its outcomeHigh, one 20 mark part is common
8Non Cooperative Game Theory IISequential and extensive form games, Bayesian Nash equilibrium, the Spence model of job market signalling, screening, pooling and separating equilibria, first best contracts and the principal agent settingMedium, kept as backup in this file

Students often ask which block to start with when time is short. Block 1 and Block 6 together have supplied the largest share of recent marks, so those two are the sensible entry point, with Block 5 next because welfare economics answers are short to write and hard to lose marks on.

If you also need the course content itself rather than a shortlist, our MEC 101 Study Material section carries the block wise reading material for Microeconomic Analysis alongside this guess paper, and the two are meant to be used together rather than as substitutes.

MEC 101 Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution for the 2026 Sessions

The MEC 101 term end paper runs for three hours and carries 100 marks, split into Section A where you attempt any two of four questions at 20 marks each, and Section B where you attempt any five of eight questions at 12 marks each. The paper is printed in English and Hindi, so the medium you write in is your own choice.

The arithmetic of that pattern is what makes a 13 question shortlist workable. You will write seven answers in total, two long and five medium. Preparing thirteen questions means you can afford to skip almost half of what you have revised and still fill the paper, which is exactly the cushion a guess paper is supposed to buy you.

Section A questions are usually split into parts, something like 10 plus 5 plus 5 or 7 plus 7 plus 6, and those parts often combine a definition, a derivation and a numerical. That is why the long answers in this file are written in labelled parts rather than as continuous essays. Marks in Section A are lost by skipping a part, not by writing a weak paragraph.

Section B is where most students actually win or lose the paper. Twelve marks in roughly 250 words rewards precision. A clean definition, four to six numbered points with the correct technical vocabulary and a two line conclusion will outscore a page of unstructured writing every time.

Time budgeting is worth planning before you enter the hall. Roughly 30 minutes for each Section A answer and 20 minutes for each Section B answer leaves about twenty minutes for reading the paper and checking your work at the end.

Who Should Buy This MEC 101 Solved Guess Paper

This file suits MAEC students who have four to eight weeks left before the MEC 101 paper and need a defensible shortlist rather than another thousand pages of reading. It is written for revision, not for first contact with the subject.

It fits you well if you are a working student attending few counselling sessions, if you are a reappear candidate who already sat MEC 101 once and knows where the paper hurt you, or if you come from a commerce or management background and find the mathematical parts of microeconomics slower going than the descriptive ones.

It fits you less well if you have not opened the course at all. Thirteen answers cannot substitute for the concepts behind them, and a topic you have never seen is hard to reproduce under exam pressure even from a good model answer. In that situation, read the blocks for two weeks first, then use this file to focus the last stretch.

Students preparing more than one economics course in the same session usually take the MAEC Guess Paper bundle for the semester instead of a single code, since the same analysis has been done for the other first semester papers and the saving is meaningful.

How to Write MEC 101 Microeconomic Analysis Answers for Full Marks

The single largest source of lost marks in MEC 101 is answering a mathematical question in words, and the second largest is finishing a derivation without stating what it proves. Both are habits, and both are fixable in a week of practice.

Open every answer with a definition that uses the technical vocabulary of the course. Write that the expenditure function gives minimum outlay for a stated utility level at given prices, not that it shows how much a consumer spends. Evaluators mark against the block terminology, and the opening sentence is where they decide how seriously to read the rest.

Show the algebra line by line. If the question asks you to derive a time path or decompose a price effect, each step should be visible, because part marks attach to steps. Skipping from the market clearing condition straight to a stability condition throws away the marks that sit in between.

Draw the diagram whenever the concept has one, and label the axes and the equilibrium point. Inter temporal consumption, the cobweb adjustment path and long run competitive equilibrium are all easier to earn marks on with a figure than without one.

Close with two or three evaluative lines rather than a summary. Say what the result implies, or where the model breaks down. On a critical examination question, that closing paragraph is often the difference between a pass mark and a strong one.

Students who want more practice after this file usually move to our wider IGNOU Solved Guess Paper collection, which follows the same answer structure across other programmes and course codes.

How to Get the Complete MEC 101 Guess Paper on WhatsApp

Send a WhatsApp message to 9899436384 with the course code MEC 101 and your session, and our team will confirm availability, the price and the delivery format on the same chat. This is a paid study material and it is sent only after the enquiry is confirmed.

Please include your enrolment number and your study centre in the first message. It saves a round of questions, and it lets us check that you are on the current MAEC syllabus rather than an older MEC structure, because the block arrangement changed between the two.

The same number handles doubts after delivery. If a step in a derivation does not make sense, or you want to know how a 20 mark answer should be split across parts, message us with the question number and our subject team will respond.

Enquiries are answered through the day and through the exam season. During the weeks immediately before a term end sitting the queue is longer, so ordering early is worth doing if your session is close.

MEC 101 Guess Paper Questions Students Ask Us

What is included in the MEC 101 Solved Guess Paper for 2026?

The file contains 13 questions with complete written answers, covering all eight blocks of Microeconomic Analysis. Eight questions are marked high priority and five are marked medium priority as backup. It also carries the exam pattern, an answer writing rule set and the frequency table built from six past sessions. The material runs to roughly 40 pages and is delivered as a print ready PDF.

Is this MEC 101 guess paper valid for both June 2026 and December 2026?

Yes, the same file covers both 2026 sittings. IGNOU conducts term end examinations for the MAEC programme in June and December only, and the syllabus for MEC 101 does not change between the two sessions of one academic year. The question selection is built on six past papers spanning both June and December sittings, so it is not weighted towards one session over the other.

How were the MEC 101 important questions chosen for this file?

Six term end papers from June 2023 to December 2025 were read in full and every question was tagged to a syllabus block. Topics appearing in three or more sessions were marked high priority. Topics appearing twice were marked medium. Topics with a strong record that have skipped the two most recent sessions were also raised to high, on the basis that setters rotate syllabus areas rather than drop them.

Are the MEC 101 Microeconomic Analysis answers written in proper exam format?

Each answer opens with a technical definition, develops in numbered points or labelled parts, and closes with a short evaluative paragraph. Word length is matched to marks, close to 450 words for 20 mark questions and close to 250 words for 12 mark questions. Derivations are written step by step, and comparison questions are presented as a table first and then explained in prose.

Does the MEC 101 guess paper cover all eight blocks of Microeconomic Analysis?

Yes. Every block from Consumer Behaviour through to Non Cooperative Game Theory II is represented in the shortlist. Blocks 1 and 6 carry the most questions because they have supplied the largest share of marks in recent term end papers. Block 8 is deliberately lighter, since signalling and Bayesian equilibrium topics appear less often and are kept as backup rather than as core preparation.

Can the MEC 101 guess paper replace the IGNOU study material?

No, and it is not built to. The guess paper narrows your revision to the topics most likely to be examined and shows you how to present them, but the concepts behind those answers come from the printed blocks. Students who read the course material first and then use this shortlist in the final weeks get far more from it than students who start here with no prior reading.

What is the difference between the MEC 101 guess paper and previous year question papers?

A previous year paper tells you what was asked in one past session. This file analyses six of those papers together, counts how often each topic recurs, then supplies a written answer for the topics that the pattern favours. Past papers are the raw evidence and the guess paper is the conclusion drawn from it, so most students use both side by side.

How do I get the complete MEC 101 guess paper with all 13 answers?

Message 9899436384 on WhatsApp with the course code MEC 101, your session and your enrolment number. Our team will confirm the price, availability and delivery format on the same chat. This is paid study material, so nothing is dispatched before the enquiry is confirmed. The same number is used afterwards for doubt support on any question in the file.
