MSO 002 Solved Guess Paper covering 13 high probability questions with full model answers written for the 2026 Term End Exam.
Every answer is drawn strictly from the IGNOU MSO 002 textbook, so nothing you write sits outside the prescribed syllabus.
Built after reading six MSO 002 papers from June 2023 to December 2025, including the latest December 2025 question paper.
Answers follow the 20 mark structure examiners expect, with a definition, numbered points and a short evaluative conclusion.
Each question carries a HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW priority tag so you know exactly what to revise first when time runs short.
All eight blocks of Research Methodologies and Methods are covered, so both Section I and Section II are safe on exam day.
Language is kept plain and readable, which helps first year MSO students who find sociological theory heavy going in English.
Delivered on WhatsApp as a clean 16 page PDF you can read on a phone, print, or revise from the night before the paper.

Course Overview

MSO 002 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a 16 page revision pack built for students sitting the Research Methodologies and Methods paper in the June 2026 or December 2026 Term End Examination. It carries 13 questions that have been picked after reading six actual IGNOU papers, and each one comes with a full model answer written the way a 20 mark answer is meant to be written.

Most first year MA Sociology students do not fail this paper because the syllabus is hard. They lose marks because they revise all eight blocks at the same depth, run out of time, and then write three loose paragraphs where the examiner wanted a definition, a numbered list and a closing line. This pack fixes the second problem and shrinks the first.

What the MSO 002 Solved Guess Paper for 2026 Contains

The pack is a 16 page PDF holding 13 exam style questions, 13 pages of written answers, a priority legend, an exam pattern briefing and a topic frequency chart covering six sessions. Nothing in it is a link, a placeholder or a promise of material arriving later. What you see in the index is what sits in the file.

Seven questions sit in Section I and six in Section II, which mirrors how the real paper splits its ten questions. Because you are told to attempt five with at least two from each Section, a pack that loaded everything into one half would be useless to you in the hall. The spread here is deliberate.

Each question opens with the block it belongs to, the sessions in which that topic last appeared, and a HIGH, MEDIUM or LOW tag. Then comes the question phrased in IGNOU language, followed by the answer broken into a meaning paragraph, numbered points, a comparison table where the textbook itself compares, and a one line conclusion.

This is a first year paper in the IGNOU Master of Arts (Sociology) (MSO) programme, and it is the course that most students postpone because methodology feels drier than the theory papers. Postponing it is the mistake. Methodology is the most predictable of the four first year papers, which is exactly why a focused list works so well here.

One thing worth saying plainly. This is a guess paper, not a leaked paper. It is a ranked prediction built from evidence about what IGNOU has actually asked. Treat it as your revision spine, not as a guarantee.

Sample Questions with Answers from the MSO 002 Guess Paper

Five of the 13 answers are reproduced below in full so you can judge the writing before you pay. They are pulled from five different blocks and from both Sections, so you are seeing the range rather than the five easiest. The remaining eight questions are in the complete file.

Sample Question 1Block 1Section IPriority HIGH20 marks

Discuss Auguste Comte's ideas on the nature of Sociology.

Meaning of Comte's view of Sociology. Auguste Comte is known as the founder of sociology and it is from him that the very word "sociology" comes. He argued that just as natural scientists discovered laws determining the behaviour of matter, social scientists could discover laws governing human social behaviour through a positive philosophy.

Comte's positivism. Comte assumed the social world was as regular and objective as the natural world, so social laws governed society just as natural laws governed nature. He held that the methodology of the natural sciences was the ideal way to discover the laws of the social world.

The general laws of sociology.

  1. Laws of co-existence, or social statics. These govern the relationship between the different parts of society and determine their functions and interrelationships.
  2. Laws of succession, or social dynamics. These govern social change and require exploring how the nature and function of social institutions change over time.

Task of sociology. Comte held that sociology must discover the Laws of Development through three steps: systematic observation of social facts, collection of data or facts, and development of theories to explain those facts. This logic Comte called inductivism, or inductive positivism.

The three stages of human society. From his inductive positivism Comte gave three stages of evolution: the age of religion or theological stage, the age of metaphysics or abstract stage, and the age of reason or positive and scientific stage.

Conclusion. Comte established sociology as a science of society modelled on the natural sciences, using positivism, the laws of statics and dynamics, and the law of three stages to explain social development.

Sample Question 2Block 2Section IPriority HIGH20 marks

Critically evaluate positivist methodology.

Meaning of positivism. Positivism grew out of Enlightenment optimism about science. The scientific thinking of Bacon, Descartes and Newton, and the triumphs of Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei, meant the social sciences were born in the shadow of the natural sciences and sought to imitate their method. Comte provided the intellectual foundation of positivist sociology.

Salient features of positivism.

  1. Unity of method. Sociology is not different from the natural sciences as far as the method of enquiry is concerned.
  2. Objectivity and value neutrality. It separates the knower from the known, subjectivity from objectivity, and fact from value.
  3. Not common sense. Sociology rests on explanatory principles that give the discipline a universal character.
  4. Organised knowledge. It is a formal body of knowledge with specialised skills and a techno scientific vocabulary.
  5. Abstraction and generalisation. Human experiences can be explained through law like generalisations.
  6. Social engineering. Scientific knowledge of society can be applied to social engineering.

Critique of positivism. What applies in the domain of nature does not necessarily apply to human society, which consists of self reflexive agents who think, argue, contest and transform the world. Positivism undermines the creativity, reflexivity and agency of social actors.

Its so called ethical neutrality reduces sociology to a mere technique, separated from moral and political issues, and that neutrality can be used by the establishment to legitimise itself.

Conclusion. Positivism gave sociology a scientific status through unity of method, objectivity and generalisation, but it was criticised for treating self reflexive human society like nature and for a value neutrality that hides its own politics.

Sample Question 3Block 5Section IIPriority HIGH20 marks

Distinguish between probability and non-probability sampling with examples.

Meaning of sampling. A population may be defined as an aggregate of individuals possessing a common trait or traits. Sampling methods are classified into probability and non probability sampling. If the purpose is to draw conclusions about the population as a whole, probability sampling is required. If you only wish to explore a small group for illustration, non probability sampling will do.

Probability sampling. Here each member of the population has a known, non zero probability of being selected. The key is random selection, and sampling error can be calculated.

  1. Random sampling. The purest form, where each member has an equal and known chance of selection.
  2. Systematic sampling. Selection follows a fixed interval after a random start.
  3. Stratified sampling. Superior to random sampling because it reduces sampling error by drawing from strata.
  4. Cluster sampling. Useful when the population is widely dispersed.

Non-probability sampling. Here members are selected without a known probability of inclusion.

  1. Convenience sampling. Also called haphazard or accidental, used in exploratory research.
  2. Judgment sampling. The researcher selects units by expert judgment.
  3. Snowball sampling. An extension of convenience sampling, where respondents refer others.
  4. Quota sampling. The non probability equivalent of stratified sampling.
Probability and non-probability sampling compared in MSO 002
BasisProbabilityNon-probability
SelectionRandom, known chanceNon-random, unknown chance
Sampling errorCan be calculatedCannot be calculated
Best usePopulation wide conclusionsExploration and illustration

Conclusion. Probability sampling relies on random selection and allows sampling error to be measured for population wide conclusions, while non probability sampling selects units without known probability and suits exploratory study.

Sample Question 4Block 6Section IIPriority HIGH20 marks

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the survey method? Discuss.

Meaning of survey research. Survey research is a method of gathering information from a population on a given subject. Unlike qualitative research it invariably covers a large population without collecting from every individual, relying instead on a representative sample. It is of two types, census and sample based survey research.

Advantages of the survey method.

  1. It is relatively inexpensive, especially where the survey is self administered.
  2. It is useful in describing the characteristics and emerging trends of a large population.
  3. It can be administered from remote locations by mail, e-mail or telephone, which makes very large samples feasible.
  4. Many questions can be asked on one topic, giving considerable flexibility to the analysis.
  5. Different modes of administration can be chosen to suit the requirement.
  6. Standardised questions make measurement precise, enforce uniform definitions and raise reliability.

Weaknesses of the survey method.

  1. A preoccupation with standardisation makes questions very general, leading to simplification.
  2. It is inflexible, since design, tools and mode of administration must be fixed in advance.
  3. A large proportion of selected respondents must agree to respond, which is not always easy.
  4. It demands attention and honesty from respondents, who may forget or avoid controversial issues.
  5. It is invariably context blind, although context matters greatly in the social world.

Conclusion. The survey method is economical, wide reaching, flexible in questioning and standardised for reliability, but it is rigid, dependent on respondent cooperation, prone to over simplification and blind to context.

Sample Question 5Block 7Section IIPriority HIGH20 marks

What is ethnography? Discuss the contribution of Malinowski to field work.

Meaning of ethnography. Ethnography is a way of doing research that studies people according to certain procedures and rules in their natural settings, in order to capture the social meanings of their everyday life. It indicates intensive, field based and qualitative research of human groups through participant observation. A distinction is often made between micro and macro ethnography.

Contribution of Malinowski.

  1. Foundation of participant observation. Bronislaw Malinowski, writing in 1922, laid the foundation of participant observation for anthropological fieldwork.
  2. Against amateur data. Before him, ethnographic information was collected by amateurs such as missionaries, colonial administrators and travellers, whose work was unsystematic.
  3. The fieldwork norm. He maintained that an ethnographer must carry out fieldwork for not less than one year in a community, staying there, learning the language and recording behaviour.
  4. The native point of view. He stressed understanding the native point of view, collecting data on the imponderabilia of actual life to grasp how a culture was organised and functioned.

Fieldwork as a scientific method. Through Malinowski, and later Franz Boas in 1920 who popularised fieldwork in the training of anthropologists, fieldwork emerged as a scientific method for collecting primary information directly from people, chiefly to record small scale cultures that were fast disappearing.

Conclusion. Ethnography is the field based qualitative study of people's everyday meanings, and Malinowski gave it its scientific form through long term participant observation, mastery of the local language, and study from the native point of view.

Those are 5 of the 13 answers. The remaining 8 cover the empirical approach, evolutionary and functional theories, the feminist method, elements of research methodology, observation as a method, central tendency, ethics in field research and the short notes set.

How We Built the IGNOU MSO 002 Important Questions List

We read six MSO 002 question papers spanning June 2023 to December 2025, logged every question against its block, counted repeats, and then ranked topics by how often they returned and how recently. A topic that came back four or more times, or that turned up in the most recent paper, was tagged HIGH.

Repetition is the whole point of a guess paper for this course. Survey method appeared in five of the six papers we studied. Sampling appeared in four. Ethics and the internet in research kept resurfacing in short note slots. Those are not lucky guesses, they are patterns visible to anyone willing to sit with the papers for a few hours.

If you want to run that check yourself rather than take our word for it, start with the IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper section and pull the MSO 002 papers for the last three years. You will see the same clusters we did. The originals are also hosted on the university's own question paper archive.

Answers were then written from the prescribed textbook rather than from general sociology reading. That matters more than it sounds. Examiners for this paper mark against the IGNOU units, and an answer that cites Bourdieu when the unit names Mies reads as off syllabus even when it is correct.

We also cross checked the block and unit mapping against IGNOU's own eGyanKosh repository for MSO-002, so that every question in the pack points at a real unit you can open and read.

Six Session Frequency Analysis Behind the MSO 002 Important Questions

Twenty five topics were tracked across the June 2023, December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025 and December 2025 papers, and nine of them cleared the HIGH threshold. A tick means the topic was asked in that session, in some phrasing, as a full question or a short note.

The LOW rows are the useful part of this table, not the wasted part. Idealism, the phenomenological tradition and correlation working have each appeared once in six sessions. Skimming them costs an hour. Preparing them properly costs a week you do not have.

This same session by session method sits behind every IGNOU Solved Guess Paper we publish, whatever the course code. The tick grid is rebuilt from scratch for each subject, because repetition patterns in a methodology paper look nothing like those in a theory paper.

MSO 002 Exam Pattern Marks and Word Limits for 2026

The MSO 002 paper is 100 marks over 3 hours, printed in two Sections with five questions each, and you attempt any five in all with a minimum of two from each Section. Every question carries 20 marks, and the instruction on the paper asks for answers of about 500 words.

One question, usually the last in Section II, is a short notes item where you write on any two of three options for 10 marks each. Practise that format separately. A 10 mark note is not a shortened essay, it is a definition, three or four crisp points and a stop.

Question typeMarksWord targetTime to allot
Full essay question20About 450 to 50030 minutes
Short note, one option10About 25015 minutes
Very short note5About 1508 minutes

Two dates matter and no others. IGNOU conducts its Term End Examination in June and in December only. If you see a MSO 002 paper described as belonging to any other month or to a numbered session, that label is wrong and whatever frequency claim rests on it is unreliable.

A note for students admitted from January 2026 onwards. IGNOU has revised the sociology master's programme and introduced the code MASO alongside the existing MSO. Learners who took admission before January 2026 continue under MSO and sit this same MSO 002 paper. Confirm your own programme code on your admission record before you plan your revision.

Practical File and Project Position for MSO 002 Explained

MSO 002 has no practical file and no laboratory component, so there is no practical index to publish for this course. It is an 8 credit theory paper assessed through one written Term End Examination and the tutor marked assignment. We would rather say that plainly than invent a file list that does not exist.

The confusion is understandable, because MSO 002 is the research methods paper and students assume research means fieldwork. The applied material does exist, but it is examined on paper. Block 8 carries five units on using the internet, running SPSS, tabulating results and structuring a research report, and those are tested descriptively rather than through a submitted file.

Unit 33, Guidelines to Research Project Assignment, is the closest thing to project instruction inside this course. It teaches the shape of a research report, from problem statement through methodology and findings to bibliography. Read it if your second year choices include any project or dissertation option, because the conventions carry over.

What you do submit for MSO 002 is the tutor marked assignment issued for your admission year. That is a separate document from this guess paper, and answering it from the same units you revise here saves considerable time.

Who Should Buy the MSO 002 Solved Guess Paper and How to Order

This pack suits first year MSO students with four to six weeks left, backlog candidates reattempting MSO 002, and working learners who cannot read 33 units but can write five strong answers. If you have a full semester of study time ahead of you, read the textbook first and come back to this for revision.

It will not suit you if you want a one page cheat sheet. The answers here run to roughly 450 words each because that is what a 20 mark question needs. Shorter would look tidier on a phone screen and score worse in the hall.

Ordering is a WhatsApp conversation, not a checkout form. Message the number below with your course code and your exam session, confirm the price, complete payment, and the PDF arrives in the same chat. Most students receive the file within a few hours during working times.

Students taking more than one master's programme sometimes ask whether we cover their other subjects too. We do, and the economics list including the MAEC Guess Paper range is built on the same six session method, though the question banks and priority tags are of course entirely different.

MSO 002 Guess Paper Questions Students Ask Most

The eight answers below cover validity across sessions, question count, sourcing, delivery and the MSO to MASO programme change. If your question is not here, send it to the WhatsApp number above and we will answer before you pay.

Is the MSO 002 Solved Guess Paper valid for both June 2026 and December 2026?

Yes. The pack is prepared for both Term End Examination sessions of 2026, because IGNOU holds examinations only in June and December and draws both papers from the same eight blocks. The frequency analysis runs to December 2025, so the ranking stays current across the year. Students sitting either session use the identical file with no changes required.

How many questions does the MSO 002 guess paper contain in total?

Thirteen questions with complete answers. Seven sit in Section I and six in Section II, matching how the real MSO 002 paper divides its ten questions. Five of the thirteen are reproduced in full on this page as samples, which leaves eight in the paid file. The answers run to roughly thirteen pages inside a sixteen page PDF.

Are the MSO 002 answers written from the IGNOU textbook or from outside sources?

Every answer is written from the prescribed IGNOU study material for this course. Scholars, dates and counts are taken as the units give them, so Malinowski stays at 1922 and positivism keeps its six features. This matters at marking, because evaluators check answers against the units rather than against general sociology reading you may have done elsewhere.

Will these MSO 002 important questions actually appear in the 2026 examination?

We cannot promise that, and you should distrust anyone who does. What we can show is that these topics returned repeatedly across six consecutive papers, which makes them the rational place to spend limited revision time. Treat the pack as a ranked probability list rather than a guarantee. Read your textbook alongside it rather than instead of it.

Does MSO 002 have a practical file that I need to submit separately?

No. MSO 002 is a theory course of eight credits with no practical or laboratory component. Your submission for this course is the tutor marked assignment issued for your admission year. The applied content on SPSS, internet research and report writing sits in Block 8 and is examined through written questions, not through a submitted file.

How do I receive the MSO 002 file after paying, and in what format?

Delivery is on WhatsApp at 9899436384 as a single PDF of sixteen pages. Send your course code and exam session, confirm the price, complete the payment, and the file returns to the same chat. It opens on any phone or laptop and prints cleanly on A4 if you prefer revising from paper rather than a screen.

Can I use this MSO 002 pack to write my tutor marked assignment as well?

Partly. The answers cover the same units your assignment draws from, so the content overlaps and your reading time drops considerably. But assignment questions are set separately each year and often ask for application rather than description. Use the pack as source material and reshape the wording to fit the exact question you have been given.

I am admitted under the new MASO code. Is the MSO 002 guess paper still useful?

Check your admission record first. Learners admitted before January 2026 remain under MSO and sit this exact paper, so the pack applies directly. Those admitted from January 2026 follow the revised MASO structure, where course codes and titles may differ. Message us with your programme code and we will confirm the match before you order.
