MMPO 008 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is an 18-question, 26-page answer file for IGNOU's International Logistics and Supply Chain Management course, written for the June 2026 and December 2026 term-end exams. With the June sitting behind us, December 2026 is the exam to plan for, and every answer here is sized so you can write it in roughly 35 minutes.
MMPO-008 International Logistics and Supply Chain Management is a School of Management Studies course that studies how goods, information and documents move between at least two countries, from the 7R framework and the bullwhip effect to bills of lading, 3PL contracts and supply chain resilience. IGNOU teaches it in five blocks and 15 units.
We did not guess from the syllabus alone. Our team read the six most recent term-end papers, June 2023 to December 2025, one question at a time and marked which themes return and which have gone quiet. You can check that reading against the originals on our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper page.
1. What the MMPO 008 Guess Paper Contains
The file holds 18 solved questions: 16 full 20-mark answers and two split 10 + 10 answers, mapped to every block and unit of MMPO-008. Nothing in it is padding; each answer is one you could realistically be asked in December.
Every answer follows the same exam-tested shape. It opens with the definition the IGNOU block uses, moves into numbered points with a one-line explanation each, and closes with a two or three sentence conclusion. That last line matters more than most learners think, because it shows the examiner you understood the whole question and not just the list.
Where the book compares two things, the answer does too. You get ready tables for inter-modal versus multi-modal transport, ocean versus air freight, centralised versus decentralised warehouses and the A, B and C classes of inventory. These tables are quick to reproduce and they pick up marks for clarity.
The examples are the ones the course material itself leans on: P&G's Pampers orders for the bullwhip effect, Maruti True Value for reverse logistics, Zara for agility and the 2021 Suez Canal blockage for sea perils. Using the book's own examples tells the evaluator you have read the units.
The last pages carry a short rules section. It lists what to leave out, such as forecasting numericals, full EOQ derivations and the unit-end case studies, none of which have been set in the six papers we read. It also has the topic-by-session grid behind every frequency figure on this page.
2. MMPO 008 Sample Questions with Answers
Five of the 18 answers are shown below, one from each block of MMPO-008, so you can judge the writing before you order. They are lightly trimmed for the web; the PDF versions carry the full definitions and every numbered point.
Meaning, objectives and the 7R framework of logistics and SCM
Question: Explain the meaning and objectives of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Discuss the concept of the 7R Framework and how it applies in today's complex business scenario.
Meaning. The term logistics comes from the Greek word 'Logisticos', the science of computing and calculating, and was first used in military science. Logistics is the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption to meet customer requirements. In international logistics, at least two countries take part.
Objectives
- Rapid response: meet customer service needs quickly, since buyers judge a firm by its speed.
- Minimum variance: remove unwanted upsets such as late orders, breakdowns and damaged goods.
- Minimum inventory: hold the lowest stock that still meets the service goal.
- Quality improvement: catch defects early, as one defect repeats many times.
- Life-cycle support: support the product after sale and handle its return.
The 7R framework
- Right product: what the buyer needs now or later, such as phones, tablets and HD TVs.
- Right place: delivery where the buyer wants it; Dell uses website order data for this.
- Right quantity: the correct amount at low cost; Blinkit must stock fruit and vegetables accurately.
- Right condition: the item works from manufacture to end of life, as Samsung ensures for phones.
- Right time: delivery within the promised date; Amazon ties up with delivery partners.
- Right customer: the product reaches the buyer it fits, like bulk ketchup cans for bulk buyers.
- Right cost: a fair price and fair value; Hindustan Unilever balances stock to keep cost fair.
Conclusion: Logistics and SCM plan the forward and reverse flow of goods, services and information, and the 7R framework gives managers a practical checklist for serving buyers in a complex global market.
The bullwhip effect: causes, impact and remedies
Question: What is the bullwhip effect? Discuss how a minor change in demand at the retail level can significantly impact supply chain variation at distributors, manufacturers and suppliers. Explain its remedies.
Meaning. The bullwhip effect occurs when demand information becomes more and more distorted as it moves upstream, just as a whip moves more sharply along its length when cracked. It was identified by Whang et al. (1995). Procter & Gamble noticed it in Pampers orders: retail sales moved only slightly, distributor orders varied far more, and orders on suppliers such as 3M varied even more.
Causes
- Multiple demand forecast updates: each member forecasts from the orders of the member below.
- Batching of orders: large periodic orders create sudden surges upstream.
- Gaming: a retailer expecting rationing orders 200 units to receive 100.
- Price incentives: deals trigger stocking up followed by months of no orders.
Net impact. Excess inventory across the chain, poor service where stock runs out, lost revenue, weak returns on capital, misguided capacity decisions, uneven use of transport and production schedules that were never needed.
Remedies
- Share point-of-sale demand data so every level forecasts from the same information.
- Break order batches into smaller, more frequent lots, using EDI to cut ordering cost.
- Stabilise prices with an everyday low price policy supported by activity-based costing.
- Allocate scarce stock on past sales, not order size, as General Motors and HP do.
Conclusion: A small retail change becomes a large swing upstream, raising stock and cost. Information sharing, smaller batches, stable prices and past-sales allocation keep the whip under control.
Five modes of international transport, and air versus sea
Question: Describe the five modes of transportation, identifying the most significant characteristic of each. Also describe the merits and demerits of air transportation vis-a-vis sea transportation from the exporter's perspective.
Modes. Transport is grouped by medium into ocean, air, land (road and rail) and pipeline. Each change of carrier changes capacity, delivery time, distance and cost.
- Ocean: cheapest with the largest capacity, carrying around 90% of world trade, but slow.
- Air: fastest link between markets, small by weight but high by value, suited to perishables.
- Rail: most dependable as weather barely affects it; ideal for bulk such as cement and grain.
- Road: most versatile and the only true door-to-door mode, finishing most multi-mode journeys.
- Pipeline: the only mode where the vehicle is fixed and the product moves, mainly oil and gas.
| Basis | Ocean | Air |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Slowest for international shipments | Fastest mode |
| Cost | Low, economical over long distances | Expensive |
| Emissions | Low CO2 | Very high CO2 |
| Packaging | Heavier packaging needed | Somewhat lighter packaging |
| Suits | Heavy, bulky cargo | Light, high-value goods |
Air freight is typically priced 4 to 5 times road and 12 to 16 times sea. Yet on total logistics cost it can work out cheaper, because inventory carrying, insurance, warehousing and service costs fall sharply.
Conclusion: Each mode has one defining strength. An exporter chooses between sea and air by weighing the freight tariff against total logistics cost, not tariff alone.
Types of warehouses and their economic functions
Question: Identify types of warehouses based on ownership and functions. Differentiate between centralised and decentralised warehouses, and explain the economic functions of a warehouse.
Meaning. Warehouses are godowns that keep and preserve the value, quality and usefulness of goods in a scientific, systematic way. Once static stores, they now manage flow as well as storage and sit close to the market.
Types
- Public: stores goods for anyone on payment of rent.
- Private: run by makers and traders for their own goods.
- Bonded: licensed by customs to hold goods until import duty is paid.
- Field: run by a public agency inside a factory so the firm can borrow against certified stock.
- Cold storage: keeps perishables fresh for a space charge.
- Distribution: near the market, stocking finished goods for immediate supply.
- Buffer storage: bulk holding at a well-connected point feeding distribution warehouses.
- Export and import: near ports, giving transit storage.
Centralised versus decentralised. A centralised network uses few warehouses near the plant, giving lower inventory, central control and cheaper bulk transport, but weaker market coverage. A decentralised network uses many warehouses near markets, giving wider coverage and better service for FMCG and retail chains, at the price of heavy inventory and development cost.
Economic functions. Consolidation of small shipments into one; break-bulk, as cement firms move by rail and deliver by road; stockpiling, such as woollens made in summer for winter; and value-added services like final packing and labelling once the order is known.
Conclusion: Today's warehouse is a switching facility rather than a long-term store, and choosing the right type and network keeps total logistics cost down.
Future trends, common risks and supply chain resilience
Question: Discuss the future trends in International Logistics Management. Explain the common risks encountered by logistics and supply chain management and how it becomes resilient.
Trends
- Direct delivery channels: Tesco's same-day slots and Click + Collect across its outlets.
- Leveraging technology: IoT sensors on trucks and big data feed real-time decisions.
- Collaboration: Berlin's Bento Box hub links over 140 courier firms and cuts delivery cost.
- Agility: Zara takes new designs to store in 4 to 6 weeks.
Common risks. Trade wars (Harley-Davidson moved European-bound production out of the USA in 2018), raw material shortages such as Adiponitrile in 2018, economic uncertainty like Brexit, industrial action such as France's Yellow Vest protests, container ship fires reported roughly every two months, and sea perils, notably the ship that blocked the Suez Canal in 2021.
Building resilience
- Forward-looking production and supply chain planning.
- Using data, AI and machine learning to find early warnings.
- Diversifying suppliers and manufacturing partners.
- Adding capacity and inventory buffers: 'Just in Case' alongside 'Just in Time'.
Conclusion: Direct delivery, technology, collaboration and agility shape the future, and planning, data, diverse partners and buffers keep the chain standing when risks strike.

4. IGNOU MMPO 008 Important Questions by Frequency
Modes of international transportation is the most repeated MMPO-008 topic: it appeared in all six term-end papers from June 2023 to December 2025. IT solutions for supply chains is close behind, set in five of the six.
| Topic | Times asked (of 6) | Sessions |
|---|---|---|
| Modes of international transportation | 6 | Every session, June 2023 to December 2025 |
| IT solutions: bar code, ERP, RFID and EDI | 5 | Dec 2023, Jun 2024, Dec 2024, Jun 2025, Dec 2025 |
| Meaning, objectives and 7R framework | 4 | Jun 2023, Jun 2024, Dec 2024, Jun 2025 |
| Global SCM and its challenges | 3 | Jun 2024, Dec 2024, Dec 2025 |
| Key documents and cargo flow | 3 | Jun 2024, Dec 2024, Jun 2025 |
| Warehousing: types, functions and capacity | 3 | Dec 2023, Dec 2024, Dec 2025 |
| Future trends in international logistics | 3 | Jun 2024, Jun 2025, Dec 2025 |
| Bullwhip effect and information asymmetry | 2 | Dec 2023, Dec 2025 |
| Customer service and service quality gaps | 2 | Jun 2023, Jun 2025 |
| Marketing and logistics interface | 2 | Dec 2024, Jun 2025 |
| Transportation importance and logistics cost | 2 | Jun 2025, Dec 2025 |
| Ocean versus air transportation | 2 | Dec 2023, Jun 2024 |
| 3PL, 4PL and supply chain integration | 2 | Dec 2023, Jun 2025 |
| Performance measurement and metrics | 2 | Jun 2023, Jun 2024 |
| Reverse logistics as a strategy | 1 | Jun 2024 |
| Logistics audit and control | 1 | Dec 2023 |
| Warehousing Acts and logistics laws in India | 1 | Dec 2023 |
Two patterns stand out. December papers keep returning to the bullwhip effect and warehousing, while June papers lean on customer service and the marketing interface. Topics asked only once, such as the Warehousing Corporation Act and logistics audit, are still in the file as backup answers, because IGNOU does bring back quiet topics.
Frequency tells you where to start, not where to stop. Five answers cover the paper you must write, so a safe plan is to master the top eight topics in the table and then add two backups from the lower rows.
5. MMPO 008 Exam Pattern and Answer-Writing Targets
MMPO-008 is a 3-hour, 100-mark paper in which you answer any five of eight questions, each worth 20 marks, with no compulsory question. You can confirm this on the official June 2024 MMPO-008 question paper on IGNOU's website.
Because the paper sets no word limit, plan by marks. Aim for about 450 words on a 20-mark answer and about 250 words on each part of a 10 + 10 question. That works out to roughly 35 minutes per answer, which leaves a few minutes at the end to read through.
- Open with the definition and, where the book names one, the scholar. A named source such as Copacino (1992) or Bowersox and Closs (1996) separates your answer from a generic one.
- Keep the book's exact counts: seven Rs, six service gaps, ten customer expectations, five modes of transport. Rounding them off costs marks.
- Put Acts with their years, for example the Warehousing Corporation Act, 1962 and the Multi-modal Transportation of Goods Act, 1993.
- Finish all five answers. A shorter fifth answer still earns more than an extra-polished fourth one.
6. MMPO 008 Assignment Index in Place of a Practical File
MMPO-008 has no practical file; its internal work is one tutor-marked assignment of five questions covering all blocks, and the 2026 assignment overlaps closely with the guess paper. The questions below come from IGNOU's official MMPO-008 assignment for January and July 2026.
| Assignment question | What it asks | Covered in guess paper |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | Main principles of logistics and SCM and how they create value for customers and stakeholders | Q1 (objectives, characteristics, 7Rs) |
| Q2 | The bullwhip effect and its effect on overall supply chain performance, with an example | Q6 (P&G Pampers example) |
| Q3 | Bill of lading, its key components and importance in international trade | Q12 part (b) |
| Q4 | Strategic role of warehouses in modern logistics and SCM | Q13 (types and economic functions) |
| Q5 | Short notes: problems in SCM, importance of global SCM, 3PL and 4PL, multi-modal transport | Q2, Q15 and Q10 |
