Course Overview

IBO 02 Solved Guess Paper 2026 is a 15-question answer set for IGNOU's International Marketing Management course, written for the December 2026 term-end exam. We picked every question after working through five years of IBO-02 papers, with December 2025 and June 2026 checked last, so the file points you at what actually gets asked.

IBO 02 International Marketing Management is a core IGNOU course studied in M.Com, PGDIBO and MCOMMAFS. It has 19 units in six blocks, moving from the basics of selling abroad to market selection, product and pricing decisions, distribution and promotion, managing overseas operations and international marketing research.

What the IBO 02 Solved Guess Paper Covers in International Marketing Management

The file holds 15 fully solved questions drawn from all six IBO-02 blocks, written out across 16 pages of answers.

Eleven of those 15 questions deal with topics that IGNOU set in at least three of the last six papers. Two more, target country selection and advertising regulations, have come up twice. The five marketing philosophies question is a deliberate gap pick: it last appeared in December 2023, and topics that sit out that long in IBO-02 tend to return.

Every answer is built the way examiners mark. It starts with a one-line definition, moves into numbered points with the exact counts used in the IGNOU blocks (four EPRG orientations, four IPLC phases, six research steps), adds a short business example such as Nissin noodles in India or Coca-Cola's single global drink, and closes with a two-line conclusion.

The same structure runs through our wider range of IGNOU Solved Guess Paper files, so if you are clearing more than one course this term, you will not need to relearn how to read each one.

IBO 02 Important Questions with Solutions from International Marketing Management

Five of the 15 questions are reproduced below in full from the PDF, one each from Blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Read them the way you would in the exam hall. If the flow, depth and examples suit how you study, the remaining ten answers follow the exact same pattern. Each sample shows its original question number, block and unit, mark split and how many of the last six papers included the topic.

Sample 1Guess paper Q1Block 1, Unit 220 marks (set as 10+10 in December 2025)Asked in 3 of 6 papers

Sample 1: EPRG Orientation Framework

Question: Explain the EPRG orientation framework. Under what circumstances should each orientation be employed? Discuss.

Meaning of the EPRG Framework

The EPRG framework provides useful guidelines for international marketing and reflects the objectives and philosophies of a company towards its overseas operations: Ethnocentric, Polycentric, Regiocentric and Geocentric.

The Four Orientations

  1. Ethnocentric: Overseas operations are secondary to domestic operations and a means to dispose of surplus production; plans, research and marketing are controlled from the home office, and product, price, distribution and promotion remain identical to the domestic market with mostly home-country personnel.
  2. Polycentric: Activities are organised country-by-country, each country treated as a separate entity; subsidiaries operate independently with their own objectives, plans and research, and the sales force is mostly local nationals.
  3. Regiocentric: Recognising the common features of a region, the firm views that region as one market and organises product, price, promotion and channels on a regional basis with regionally recruited personnel.
  4. Geocentric: The philosophy is that all human beings are alike; the entire world is treated as one market with standardised product lines, worldwide pricing, global channels and a uniform image, recruiting personnel from any country.

Circumstances for Employing Each

  1. Ethnocentric: Most appropriate when overseas sales volume is insignificant compared to total sales, so investment in detailed research and tailoring is not justified; it suits small firms just entering international operations.
  2. Polycentric: Ideal for firms seriously committed to international marketing with the capacity to invest, and best suited to deal with diverse local conditions.
  3. Regiocentric and Geocentric: Suited to firms moving further towards internationalisation; the geocentric approach may prove more successful in areas such as production and research.

Conclusion: The suitability of an orientation differs from company to company and over time; firms typically progress from an ethnocentric towards a geocentric outlook as their international involvement deepens.

Sample 2: International Market Segmentation and Targeting Strategies

Question: What do you mean by International Market Segmentation? Explain the bases of segmentation and the different targeting strategies with examples.

Meaning of International Market Segmentation

International market segmentation is the process of identifying groups or sets of potential customers and dividing a heterogeneous market into homogeneous sub-groups that can be served with distinct marketing mixes.

Bases of Segmentation

  1. Geographic: Dividing the market by nations, states, regions and cities. For example, Nissin's instant noodles are sold across Asia but customised regionally (spicier and vegetarian in India).
  2. Demographic: Using measurable characteristics such as age, gender, income, education and occupation; national and per capita income is often the single most important variable.
  3. Psychographic: Grouping buyers by attitudes, values, lifestyles or personality, as cosmetics and beverage firms do through lifestyle and core-value appeals.
  4. Behaviour: Segmenting by occasions, user status, usage rate, loyalty and buyer-readiness, for example targeting heavy users who account for a high share of consumption.

Targeting Strategies

  1. Undifferentiated targeting: Ignoring segment differences and serving the whole market with one offer, relying on mass advertising and distribution, e.g. Coca-Cola's same soft drink worldwide.
  2. Differentiated targeting: Operating in several segments with separate products and programmes, e.g. General Motors producing "a car for every purse," though at higher cost.
  3. Concentrated targeting: Focusing all effort on one or a few lucrative segments to gain strong knowledge and presence, ideal when resources are limited but carrying higher-than-normal risk.

Conclusion: Homogeneous markets are best served by undifferentiated targeting, while differentiated or concentrated strategies suit heterogeneous markets; the right base and strategy together let a firm reach the most profitable buyers efficiently.

Sample 3: International Product Life Cycle

Question: Describe the phases of the International Product Life Cycle. How does it help in the planning of the product? Discuss with examples.

Meaning of the International Product Life Cycle

The international product life cycle discusses the consumption pattern of a product across many countries: a product is innovated in a developed country, foreign countries gradually begin production, and the innovator finally becomes an importer of that product.

The Four Phases

  1. Export strength evident in the innovator country: Products are innovated in developed countries that have the technology and capital; after meeting home demand the manufacturer begins exporting. This reflects the introduction and growth stages.
  2. Foreign production starts: Importing firms in middle-income countries realise the demand potential and begin local production, gradually exporting to low-income countries and reducing the innovator's exports. This is the maturity stage.
  3. Foreign production becomes competitive in export markets: Low-income countries exploit cheap labour, gain manufacturing expertise and become more efficient, replacing the innovator's export base as the product becomes standardised. This is the declining stage for the innovator.
  4. Import competition begins: Producers in the low-income country attain economies of scale and become more efficient than the innovator, who finally finds importing advantageous and becomes an importer of the now fully standardised product.

How It Helps Product Planning

The cycle helps the firm manage stages so that a product reaching maturity or decline at home can be introduced into a foreign market, and production can be located in the country where factors of production are used most efficiently, guiding decisions on when to export, when to shift production and when to import.

Conclusion: By tracing how comparative advantage migrates from the innovator to other countries, the international product life cycle guides timing of exports, overseas production and eventual imports, making it a valuable tool for long-term product planning.

Sample 4: Direct vs Indirect Channels of Distribution

Question: Distinguish between direct and indirect channels of marketing. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both channels.

Direct and Indirect Channels

In a direct channel the manufacturer reaches foreign-market channel members itself, whereas in an indirect channel the manufacturer deals with one or more domestic middlemen who in turn move the product to foreign middlemen or final users.

Direct Channel: Advantages and Disadvantages

  1. Active market exploitation: The manufacturer gains experience in export marketing and stays in touch with the market.
  2. Better communication: Information and data from the market become more reliable and easily available.
  3. Higher profit: Selling directly saves the commission otherwise payable to an agent, and becomes profitable at high volume.
  4. Limitations: Difficult to manage if the manufacturer is unfamiliar with the market, time-consuming, and costly without large volume. In short, more risk but more control and more return.

Indirect Channel: Advantages and Disadvantages

  1. Ease and low investment: The manufacturer uses domestic agents or domestic merchants, needing little overseas knowledge or investment.
  2. Drawbacks: The producer may never develop export expertise, both parties may lack personal involvement, and the channel may not be permanent.

BasisDirect ChannelIndirect Channel
ContactManufacturer deals with foreign buyers directlyThrough domestic middlemen
ControlHigh control over marketLimited control
Risk and returnMore risk, more returnLower risk, lower return

Conclusion: Direct channels suit firms with adequate volume and market knowledge seeking control and higher returns, while indirect channels suit those wanting an easy, low-investment entry at the cost of control and expertise.

Sample 5Guess paper Q13Block 6, Unit 1710 + 10 marksAsked in 5 of 6 papers

Sample 5: International Marketing Research: Complexities and Process

Question: (a) Explain the complexities in conducting International Marketing Research. (b) Describe the steps involved in the international marketing research process.

(a) Complexities in International Marketing Research

International marketing research is considered very complex because it encompasses a wide canvas; complexities arise from differences in the political, social, economic and cultural environments of various countries, which prevent a standardised approach.

  1. Political and economic factors: Different political systems lead to different approaches to industries. The car industry is treated differently in China and Japan, and internet access and advertising are restricted in some countries, all of which affect the marketing variables a researcher must study.
  2. Social and cultural factors: The same terms carry different meanings across markets ("middle class" in India differs from that in the USA), so concepts and scales must be adjusted; translation problems are tackled through back-translation and decentering.
  3. Sampling difficulties: Diversity of consumer behaviour causes sampling-frame errors, and the desired representative sample may not be readily available.

(b) The Research Process

The international marketing research process comprises the following six steps:

  1. Definition of objectives: Clearly defining why the research is undertaken, since this guides every later step.
  2. Determining information requirements: Deciding the type of data needed to avoid wasting scarce resources on irrelevant information.
  3. Selection of methodologies: Choosing between desk research from secondary sources and primary survey research, and between census and sample.
  4. Collection of data and information: Planning the fieldwork, drafting the questionnaire and gathering reliable, updated and relevant information.
  5. Tabulation, analysis and interpretation: Editing, tabulating and objectively interpreting the data without subjectivity.
  6. Report preparation: Presenting findings backed by statistical tables and qualitative information.

Conclusion: Because environmental, conceptual and sampling differences make international research harder than domestic research, following the six disciplined steps, from objectives to report, is essential to generate reliable, comparable information.

IGNOU publishes the unit PDFs for this course on eGyanKosh. If you would rather study from compact notes than the full block books, our IBO 02 Study Material follows the same unit order shown above.

Units 14 and 16 have not produced a strong repeat pattern, so the guess paper treats them as backup reading rather than giving them a full answer. Block 6 on research carries more weight than its three units suggest, because some version of the research question has shown up in five of the last six papers.

IBO 02 International Marketing Management Exam Pattern and Answer Length

The IBO-02 term-end exam lasts 3 hours and carries 100 marks; you attempt any five questions, each worth 20 marks.

This is taken straight from the instructions printed on the official IBO-02 December 2025 question paper. There are no separate sections, and all questions carry equal marks. What changes from paper to paper is how a 20-mark question is split, and that split decides how long each part of your answer should be.

How IBO-02 questions are split and how much to write for each split
Mark splitReal example from past papersSuggested length
20 (single question)Components of the international marketing environment, December 2025About 450 words
10 + 10EPRG orientation and when to use each, December 2025About 250 words per part
5 + 15Meaning of involvement and reasons to go international, June 2023About 150 + 350 words
12 + 8Five marketing philosophies and their relevance, December 2023About 250 + 200 words
4 x 5 short notesShort-note question placed near the end of most papersAbout 150 words per note

A common mistake is writing one long block for a 10+10 question. Examiners look for part (a) and part (b) as separate headings, so keep them apart even when the two parts overlap.

If you want to see these papers yourself, our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper collection has them by session. Going through two or three of them after finishing the guess paper is a good way to test whether you can adapt an answer when IGNOU rewords a question.

Topics that appeared only once in six papers, such as IT in international marketing, contract manufacturing and emerging trends, were left out on purpose. Spending an evening on them gives far less return than one more pass over segmentation, services or research, which have each turned up five times.

IGNOU Programmes That Study IBO 02 International Marketing Management

IBO-02 is studied in three IGNOU programmes: M.Com, PGDIBO and MCOMMAFS, all of which sit the same term-end paper.

Master of Commerce (M.Com / MCOM): IBO-02 is one of the international business courses in the M.Com structure, and for many learners it is the first paper that asks for business examples rather than just definitions.

Post Graduate Diploma in International Business Operations (PGDIBO): Here IBO-02 is a central paper, since marketing across borders is the backbone of the diploma. Learners often pair it with the logistics and export management courses of the same programme.

Master of Commerce in Management Accounting and Financial Strategies (MCOMMAFS): The course code, syllabus and exam paper are the same, so the guess paper works without any change.

Preparing several M.Com courses together? Our M.Com Guess Paper range lets you plan all your papers in one go instead of hunting course by course.

10-Day Revision Plan for IBO 02 International Marketing Management

Ten focused days are enough to cover all 15 questions once and still leave a full day for a timed mock paper.

Day-by-day IBO-02 revision plan using the 15 guess paper questions
DayQuestionsWhat to aim for
Day 1Q14, Q3Get the basics right: five philosophies and the nine reasons firms go abroad
Day 2Q1, Q2Learn the four EPRG orientations and eight environment components by heart
Day 3Q4, Q5Practise one geographic example and one targeting example in your own words
Day 4Q6, Q7Draw the four IPLC phases as a flow and list Germany's packaging rule as an example
Day 5Q10Write both parts of the pricing answer against a 20-minute timer
Day 6Q11Reproduce the direct vs indirect comparison table without looking
Day 7Q8, Q9Separate communication objectives from advertising regulations so they do not blur
Day 8Q12, Q13Memorise the four service traits and the six research steps in order
Day 9Q15Write all four short notes at 150 words each in under 30 minutes
Day 10Any fiveSit a full three-hour mock and check each answer against the word targets

Keep an hour a day for writing, not just reading. IBO-02 answers are long, and the students who lose marks are usually the ones who know the points but run out of time by question four.

IBO 02 International Marketing Management FAQs

Quick answers to what IBO-02 students ask us most before ordering.

Is the IBO 02 Solved Guess Paper enough to pass International Marketing Management?

It covers the topics that have come up most in recent IBO-02 papers, so it is a strong base for the December 2026 exam. Eleven of its 15 questions deal with topics set in at least three of the last six papers. Still, no guess paper can promise the exact questions, so read your block summaries once and use these answers for final writing practice.

How many questions are in the IGNOU IBO 02 Guess Paper for International Marketing Management?

The guess paper has 15 fully solved questions across 16 pages of answers. Five of them are shown in full on this page as samples, and the other 10 are available only in the complete PDF. The last question is a short-notes set with four parts covering licensing and franchising, product adaptation, the promotion mix and direct exporting.

Which IBO 02 International Marketing Management topics repeat most in IGNOU papers?

In the six papers from June 2023 to December 2025, market segmentation and targeting, marketing of services and international marketing research each appeared five times. The marketing environment, product life cycle, packaging, marketing communication and pricing each appeared four times. These eight topics carry the most weight in the guess paper and deserve your earliest revision slots.

Is there a practical file for IBO 02 International Marketing Management?

No. IBO-02 is a theory course, so there is no practical file to prepare or submit for it. Your result depends on the written term-end exam along with the assignment component set by IGNOU for the course. That is why this guess paper focuses entirely on long written answers, mark splits and word limits for the three-hour paper.

What is the exam pattern of IBO 02 International Marketing Management?

The term-end exam runs for three hours and carries 100 marks. You attempt any five questions, and all questions carry equal marks, so each is worth 20. A question may be set as a single 20-mark answer or split into parts such as 10+10, 5+15 or 12+8, and one question is often a set of short notes.

Can PGDIBO and MCOMMAFS students use the IBO 02 International Marketing Management guess paper?

Yes. IBO-02 carries the same course code and syllabus whether you are enrolled in M.Com, PGDIBO or MCOMMAFS, and IGNOU sets the same term-end paper for the course. The questions, block mapping and word limits in this guess paper therefore apply equally to all three programmes. Just mention your programme when you message us so we can confirm quickly.
