MIS 024 Solved Guess Paper is a 20-question, answer-by-answer revision file for IGNOU course MIS 024, Mechanical and Electrical Safety Management, built for the December 2026 term-end exam. We matched every topic against six real papers, December 2023 to June 2026, and wrote each answer straight from the IGNOU course book in simple English.

MIS 024 is the fourth theory course of the Industrial Safety programmes and splits into two blocks: Block 1 covers mechanical safety and material handling, and Block 2 covers safety in electrical works and first aid. Most learners here are working engineers and supervisors, so the answers stay short, point-wise and easy to recall after a long shift.

1. What Is the MIS 024 Solved Guess Paper?

It is a set of 20 fully solved MIS 024 questions, picked by how often each topic appeared in six IGNOU papers and answered only from the course book. Every answer shows its block and unit, its marks split and the sessions in which that question was last set.

The idea is simple. Instead of reading two thick blocks cover to cover, you revise the questions IGNOU keeps returning to, in the exact shape an evaluator wants: definition first, numbered points with the right count, a table where you compare two things, and a one-line conclusion.

The file is written for December 2026, and it is part of our wider set of IGNOU Solved Guess Paper files, which follow the same research method course by course. If you are looking for the IGNOU MIS 024 Guess Paper with proper solutions rather than a bare question list, this is that file.

2. MIS 024 Sample Questions with Solutions

Here are 5 of the 20 answers exactly as they appear in the file, covering both blocks. The remaining 15 answers are in the full PDF. Each sample shows its question number in the file, so you can match it with the index further down.

Hazard identification and criteria for safeguards

Question: (a) Discuss the various aspects that have to be considered for hazard identification and prevention. (b) Enumerate the various criteria for safeguarding.

(a) Hazard identification

There are various kinds of hazards existing in the work place depending upon the machine, movements of the worker, types of clothes the workers wear, working environment causing health hazards etc.

Aspects that have to be looked into (20). Check whether:

  1. PPE is needed
  2. Machines, pits, holes are guarded
  3. Lockout is correct
  4. Clothes, jewellery or hair can get caught
  5. Sharp edges can injure
  6. Interlocking is done properly
  7. Eye protection is needed
  8. High voltage grounding is needed
  9. System turns safe on breakdown
  10. Movement is too rapid
  11. Worker can be caught in moving parts
  12. Worker reaches over moving parts
  13. Worker is off-balance
  14. Worker is dangerously placed
  15. Movements injure hands or feet, or cause strain
  16. Worker can be struck by an object
  17. Worker can fall to another level
  18. Lifting or carrying can injure
  19. Dust, chemicals, radiation, heat or noise occur
  20. Warning signals are adequate

(b) Criteria for safeguards

  1. Prevent contact: The guard must stop hands, arms or any body part from touching dangerous moving parts.
  2. Secure: It should not be easy to remove or tamper with. It must be firmly fixed and made of durable material.
  3. Protect from falling objects: Nothing should fall into moving parts and fly out like a projectile.
  4. Create no new hazards: A guard fails if it creates a new danger of its own.
  5. Must not impede the worker: A guard that stops the worker from working comfortably will soon be removed. It must give full visibility of the point of operation.
  6. Allow safe lubrication: The machine should be oiled safely without removing the guard.

Conclusion: Hazard identification tells us what can go wrong on a job. A safeguard that meets all six criteria keeps the worker safe without slowing the work.

Risks in MMHE, and fixed vs variable path equipment

Question: (a) Explain the different categories of risks associated with Mechanical Material Handling Equipment (MMHE). (b) Differentiate between fixed path and variable path equipments.

(a) Risk factors in mechanical material handling

Mechanical material handling is the movement of the products or materials or things by using the mechanical equipment's such as trucks, hoists and conveyors etc.

There are four risk factors associated with mechanical material handling:

  1. Equipment: Must work within its capacity. Maintain and inspect it regularly. It should follow the planned route and not hit machines or workers. Workers can get trapped in gears, pulleys and belts. Sudden electrical or hydraulic failure can cause a severe accident.
  2. Load: Limit the load carried. Mark cautions for flammable, explosive or toxic loads. Fit the load properly so it does not slide down.
  3. Workplace: Keep the area spacious. Keep free space so people, machines and moving loads do not collide.
  4. Employees: Appoint skilled operators and train them. One mistake can damage the whole unit.

(b) Fixed path and variable path equipments

Broadly material handling equipments can be classified into two categories, namely: Fixed path equipments, Variable path equipments.
MIS 024 sample answer: fixed path vs variable path material handling equipment
Fixed path equipmentsVariable path equipments
Move along a fixed, specified pathNo restriction in movement and direction; move wherever space is available
Handling system needs modification if plant layout changesNo modification needed when plant layout is redesigned
Examples: conveyors, monorail, chutes, pulley drives, overhead craneExamples: trucks, forklifts, mobile cranes, industrial tractors

Conclusion: MMHE risks come from equipment, load, workplace and employees. Fixed path equipment suits a fixed layout; variable path equipment gives flexibility.

Reliability, MTBF and types of failed systems

Question: (a) Explain reliability and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) with suitable examples. (b) What are the different types of failed system? How do you overcome from the failure?

(a) Reliability and MTBF

Reliability is the probability of an item in performing its function in a specified way in a given time period and under specific conditions.
  1. Failure rate (λ): The number of failures per unit of operating period (time, events or cycles).
  2. Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF): A basic measure of reliability. It is the time passed before a component, assembly or system fails.
  3. Formula: For constant failure rate systems, MTBF = 1/λ.
  4. Example: If a machine has λ = 0.002 failures per hour, MTBF = 1/0.002 = 500 hours. So it is expected to run about 500 hours between failures.
  5. Use in design: No system has nil failure. So failure is measured in MTBF and preventive steps are planned. A high quality switch reduces the chance of failure.

(b) Types of failed systems

Systems are designed to bear failures through redundant (spare) hardware or software:

  1. Fail operational: After one failure, a redundant system continues the work. Example: an airplane finishes its mission when one alternator fails.
  2. Fail safe: After a failure, the system goes to a safe mode. Example: railway signals turn all lights red; an anaesthesia machine stops the flow.
  3. Fail-passive: The system loses its function partly or fully, but can still be controlled manually.

How failure is overcome: fault management techniques

  1. Fault avoidance: use reliable parts and interlocks.
  2. Fault removal: isolate the faulty part.
  3. Fault detection: find faults early.
  4. Fault tolerance: built-in redundancy.

Conclusion: Reliability and MTBF measure how long a system works without failure. Fail-safe design and fault management keep people and machines safe.

Earth leakage protective device and earthing

Question: Explain the role of earth leakage protective device and earthing in electrical safety concern. Explain with a schematic diagram.

Earthing/grounding system and earth leakage current

In any electrical installation, an earthing system (or grounding system) connects particular parts of that installation with the Earth's conductive surface mainly for safety and different functional purposes.

Role of earthing

  1. Low-resistance path: Grounding makes a low-resistance path to earth. It stops the build-up of dangerous voltage.
  2. Clears the fault: If insulation fails, the voltage goes to ground. The fault current blows the fuse or opens the breaker.
  3. Earthing system must: (a) keep metal parts at earth potential, (b) keep earth resistance low so protective devices work in time, (c) be strong, rust-proof and tested before use.

Role of the earth leakage protective device

  1. What it does: An Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) measures leakage to earth. It compares the current in the phase (live) wire and the neutral (return) wire.
  2. How it trips: If the two currents differ, it assumes a fault and trips. It cuts off supply and can prevent electrocution or fire.
  3. Regulation 42: Installations with load above 5 kW and exceeding 250 V must have an earth leakage protective device.

The file carries a labelled schematic of an ELCB with equipment earthing alongside this answer.

Conclusion: Earthing gives the fault current a safe path to earth. The ELCB senses the leakage and cuts the supply, so both together protect people from shock.

Safety with circuit breakers, and the Megger test

Question: (a) Write down the various safety points while working with circuit breakers. (b) Write down the safety measures while doing Megger test.

(a) Safety tips for working with circuit breakers

Circuit breakers cut off power when too much current flows. Still, these safety tips must be followed:

  1. Switch off all electrical input power: Turn off the main breaker and isolate the panel first.
  2. Use personal protective equipment: Wear PPE if there is any arc flash chance.
  3. Select a suitable breaker: Match the amperage rating and wiring.
  4. Check tools, wire and new parts: Make sure they are not damaged.
  5. Be careful of hot parts: The main bus bar may still be live.
  6. Inspect before turning on: A licensed technician checks all connections.
  7. Perform regular maintenance: Replace old breakers; inspect once a year; trip test every 3 to 5 years.

(b) Megger

Megger is an electrical instrument that is used for testing insulation resistance and machine windings to safeguard all electrical equipment from major damage.

High-voltage systems need 1000 V to 5000 V for this test. The reading is in mega-ohm.

Safety measures while doing a Megger test

  1. High-resistance only: Use meggers only for high-resistance work, like insulation checks.
  2. Do not touch leads: Never touch the test leads while cranking the handle.
  3. De-energise and discharge: Fully de-energise and discharge the circuit before connecting.
  4. Disconnect the item: Separate the item from other circuits, if possible.

Conclusion: Isolation, PPE and inspection make breaker work safe. During a megger test, the circuit must be dead and the leads must never be touched.

Liked the style? The other 15 answers, including CPR, transformer safety and welding PPE, follow the same format.

3. MIS 024 Syllabus: Blocks and Units

The official course blocks are on IGNOU's eGyanKosh MIS-024 page. For full unit-wise reading beyond exam revision, see our MIS 024 Study Material, which follows the same block order.

One point the book does not tell you: it quotes the CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2010. The Central Electricity Authority replaced them with a revised set notified on 8 June 2023. In the exam, write the regulation numbers the way the book gives them, and add a line about the 2023 update if you want to show current awareness.

These MIS 024 Important Questions are the base of your revision, not the whole of it. Lower-frequency topics such as chemical poisoning and basic electrical handling first appeared in June 2026, so they are covered too, and so are welding hazards and the fireworks checklist, which have gone quiet for a few sessions.

Want to check the papers yourself? Our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper collection lets you see how each of these Mechanical and Electrical Safety Management Important Questions was worded in the real exam.

5. MIS 024 Exam Pattern and Answer-Writing Tips

The MIS 024 term-end exam is 3 hours for 70 marks, and every question carries 10 marks, usually split 5 + 5. The pattern changed recently, so check which one your paper follows as soon as you open it.

MIS 024 exam pattern: older papers compared with the latest papers
FeatureDec 2023 to Jun 2025Dec 2025 and Jun 2026
Compulsory questionQ1 compulsory: 5 objective and 5 short parts, 2 marks eachNo compulsory question
ChoiceQ1 plus any five of Q2 to Q8Any seven questions
Last questionShort notes, any two of three or fourShort notes, any two of three or four

No word limit is printed on the paper. The file works to about 150 words for a 5-mark part and about 250 words for a full 10-mark answer. Diagrams are asked for earthing with ELCB and for electrical tools, and a neat labelled sketch there picks up marks that plain text cannot.

Three habits help most. Write the exact count the book uses, such as five manual handling risk factors or three types of failed systems. Use a table when a question says differentiate. Use book terms like LOTO, fail-safe and the ABC of first aid, because evaluators scan for them.

6. MIS 024 Guess Paper File Index and Practical File Note

MIS 024 is a theory course with no practical file, so here is the full question-wise index of the guess paper instead. The 5 questions marked as samples are shown in full above; the other 15 come in the complete PDF.

9. MIS 024 Guess Paper FAQs

Quick answers to what MIS 024 learners ask us most on WhatsApp.

What does the MIS 024 guess paper for December 2026 contain?

The file holds 20 solved questions from both blocks of Mechanical and Electrical Safety Management, spread over 21 pages of answers in a 24-page PDF. It also has a frequency grid for six IGNOU papers, exam-writing rules and two labelled diagrams, one for ELCB with earthing and one for live-line tools. Five of the 20 answers are shown on this page so you can judge the quality before ordering.

Which MIS 024 topics are most important?

Reliability with MTBF and CPR for electric shock victims were asked in all six papers from December 2023 to June 2026. Hazard identification, safeguarding devices, push sticks and kick back, welding PPE, earthing with ELCB and transformer safety each came five times. Revise these eight first, because together they cover most of the questions you will be able to choose from.

How many past papers were used to make the MIS 024 guess paper?

Six term-end papers were analysed: December 2023, June 2024, December 2024, June 2025, December 2025 and June 2026. Every topic was ticked against each session to find repeats and recent gaps. The questions were then answered only from the IGNOU MIS 024 course book, so the wording and point counts match what evaluators expect to see in your answer sheet.

Which IGNOU programmes study MIS 024?

MIS 024 is a core course in IGNOU's Master of Science (Industrial Safety), code MSCIDS, the Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety, code PGDINDS, its online version PGDINDSOL, and the Post Graduate Certificate in Industrial Safety, code PGCINDS. The course code and exam paper are shared across these programmes, so one guess paper works for every learner in this group.

Does MIS 024 have a practical file?

No. MIS 024 is a theory course, so there is no separate practical file or lab record for it. Your result depends on the tutor-marked assignment and the three-hour term-end exam. Practical work in these programmes sits in the separate project course. That is why this page shows the full question-wise index of the guess paper, so you know exactly what the complete file covers.

How long should an MIS 024 answer be in the term-end exam?

No word limit is printed on MIS 024 papers, so the file works to a simple target: about 150 words for each 5-mark part and about 250 words for a 10-mark answer. Open with the book definition, give numbered points with the exact count, draw the diagram where the question asks for one, and close with a one-line conclusion. That keeps every answer tidy and quick to mark.

Are the CEA 2010 regulations in MIS 024 still in force?

The MIS 024 course book quotes the CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2010, such as Regulation 19 and Regulation 42. The Central Electricity Authority notified revised regulations on 8 June 2023 that replace the 2010 set. In the exam, write the regulation numbers as the book gives them, and you can add one line saying the 2023 regulations now apply.

How can I get the full MIS 024 Solved Guess Paper?

Send a WhatsApp message to 9899436384 with the course code MIS 024. Our team replies with the price and payment details, and the complete 24-page PDF with all 20 solved questions reaches you on WhatsApp after payment. If you also need other Industrial Safety course files, such as MIS 021 or MIS 022, list the codes in the same message so everything comes together.
