"In most sets of data there is a tendency for the observed values to group themselves about some interior value; this phenomenon is referred to as central tendency."

The Three Commonly Used Measures

Relationship Among Mean, Median and Mode

In a symmetrical distribution the three averages coincide, i.e. Mean = Median = Mode. For a moderately asymmetrical (skewed) distribution, Prof. Karl Pearson established the empirical relationship: Mode = 3 Median − 2 Mean. The median always lies between the mean and the mode.

When Median is Suitable

  • used to locate the centre or middle value of a data set;
  • used for an open-ended distribution where class limits are not fixed;
  • preferred when the data contain extremely high or low values, since it is affected less than the mean by such extremes.

When Mode is Suitable

  • used when the most typical case is desired;
  • it is the easiest average to compute;
  • the only average that can be used when the data are nominal, such as religious preference, gender or political affiliation.

Meaning of Composite Index

"A composite index expresses a quantity or a position on a scale of qualitative multi-faceted aspects which is relevant for information of the society."

A composite index is a single score made by combining different scores to measure a given variable or group of variables. If positive (unidirectional) indicators are used, a higher index implies higher development; if negative indicators are used, it becomes a deprivation index. An index is more robust than a single indicator.

Steps in Constructing a Composite Index

  1. Theoretical framework: develop a clear definition of the multidimensional phenomenon and a list of selection criteria for variables, involving experts and stakeholders.
  2. Data selection: select indicators on the basis of analytical soundness, measurability, coverage and relevance, using proxy variables when data are scarce.

There are broadly four methods of collecting primary data:

  2. Survey Method: an enquiry confined to a sample, a subset of units selected from the universe. Sampling may be random (every unit has a specified chance of selection) or non-random; the NSSO and the Annual Survey of Industries are well-known random sample surveys.
  3. Observation Method: records data as things occur, using an accepted method of measurement, for example, recording a patient's body temperature, blood pressure or pulse rate at specified intervals, or daily rainfall in an area.

"A statistical hypothesis is a conjecture about a population parameter; this conjecture may or may not be true."

Null Versus Alternative Hypothesis

  1. Null hypothesis (H₀): states that there is no difference between a parameter and a specific value, or no difference between two parameters; it always contains the "equal to" sign.
  2. Alternative hypothesis (H₁): states the existence of a difference between a parameter and a specific value, or between two parameters, and may be two-tailed, right-tailed or left-tailed.

Steps in Testing a Hypothesis (Traditional Method)

  1. State the hypotheses: translate the claim into H₀ and H₁ in mathematical symbols.

"The coefficient of determination is the ratio of the explained variation to the total variation and is denoted by r²."

The Underlying Variation

The total variation Σ(Y − Ŷ)² splits into two parts: the explained variation Σ(Yₑ − Ŷ)², attributable to the relationship between X and Y, and the unexplained variation Σ(Y − Yₑ)², due to chance. Thus total variation = explained variation + unexplained variation, and r² = explained variation ÷ total variation.

Implications

  1. r² is obtained by squaring the correlation coefficient and converting it to a percentage; if r = 0.90, then r² = 0.81, i.e. 81% of the variation in the dependent variable is accounted for by the independent variable.
