Meaning of Masculinity. The word masculinity is the noun form of masculine, meaning the qualities traditionally associated with men, especially strength and aggressiveness. Masculinity is the social definition given to the attributes of men and boys and, like gender, it is a social construct. Society prescribes how men should dress, behave, earn and be treated.
Because masculinity differs across societies and across caste, class, race and sexual orientation, it is not monolithic and is therefore referred to as masculinities.
Forms of Masculinities. Connell (1995) discusses four forms:
- Hegemonic masculinity: the dominant, culturally authoritative form that secures the domination of men and the subordination of women, demanding total submission. Only a few men can actually meet its standards.
- Subordinated masculinity: relations of dominance among men, for example gay men subordinated to straight men through discrimination, ridicule and street violence. Men labelled sissy or mama's boy also fall here.
- Complicit masculinity: most men do not fully practise the hegemonic pattern, yet gain indirectly from it as a spill over bonus of women's overall subordination.
- Marginalized masculinity: the interplay of gender with class, race or caste creates further hierarchies among masculinities in dominant and subordinated groups.
Masculinity, Patriarchy and Violence. Patriarchy and masculinity both emerged in the 1960s through the theorizing of male dominance. Negative traits associated with masculinity, such as aggression and domination, are functions of patriarchy. Men are expected to control their women, which often legitimizes domestic violence, and surveys show domestic violence is highly prevalent in India.
Conclusion. Masculinity is a fluid social construct, not a fixed biological trait. Connell's four forms reveal how power operates among men themselves, while its link with patriarchy explains much of the violence directed against women.
Sample 2: Gender and disability (10 marks, Block 4)
Question: What is disability? Discuss it in relation to gender with suitable examples.
Meaning of Disability. Disability is a state or condition of mind or body that affects an individual's functioning and interferes with the ability to take part in the activities of day to day life. It is not only an individual medical problem but a social one. A person may lose her ability to see, which is her impairment, but it is an unsupportive environment that makes her disabled.
Disability therefore has both a medical and a social dimension. Since we are all temporarily able bodied, it is an experience that can affect anyone.
Disability and Gender. According to the 2011 Census there are 26.8 million people with some form of disability in India, which is 2.11 percent of the population. Of these, 15 million are men and 11.8 million are women, so women make up just above 44 percent of persons with disabilities.
How disability is experienced depends on gender, class, caste, race and residence. Disabled women face compounded difficulty in marriage and family life, education, employment and mobility, and they are more vulnerable to violence and abuse.
Conclusion. Disability is socially produced as much as it is medically defined, and its burden is gendered, since disabled women face double discrimination on grounds of both gender and disability.
Sample 3: Gender gaps in labour force and the economy (20 marks, Block 3)
Question: Evaluate the existing gender gaps in labour force participation and the economy. Substantiate your argument with suitable examples.
Answer skeleton in the file: opens with the point that India's share of women's contribution to GDP sits below the global average of 37 percent, then presents four measured gaps. The participation gap uses NSSO figures of 21 percent urban and 36 percent rural female participation against 76 and 81 percent for men. Two units carry no standalone question, and that is a deliberate call rather than an oversight. Unit 2 and Unit 4 have not produced a full question in any of the six papers we studied, so their content is folded into the answers where it belongs instead of being padded into a fifteenth question you would never be asked.
How the BGDG 172 Gender Sensitization Guess Paper Was Built from Past Papers
Six Term End Examination papers from June 2023 to December 2025 were tabulated topic by topic, and the 14 questions were selected on repeat frequency plus recent gaps. No question was included because it looked important. Each one earned its place from the record.
The working method was ordinary and slow. Every question in each of the six papers was tagged to a unit, the tags were counted, and topics that appeared four or more times were marked HIGH. Topics appearing two or three times were marked MEDIUM. Single appearance topics were dropped or kept only as short note material.
A second pass looked for the reverse pattern, topics with a strong record that were skipped in the most recent sitting. Gender based violence is the clearest example. It appeared in June 2024 and December 2024 and then went quiet, which is usually a sign it is due, so it stayed in as a full 20 mark question.

Where the book gives a count, the count is preserved, which is why you will find four forms of masculinity and not five, and four reproductive health indicators and not three. Examiners mark against the book, so the answers follow the book.

Read the LOW rows carefully rather than ignoring them. Marriage forms, the glass ceiling and close reading each appeared once or twice, and each is handled inside the file at short note length instead of full essay length. That is the correct amount of effort for a topic with that record.
BGDG 172 Gender Sensitization Exam Pattern and Word Limits
The BGDG-172 paper runs for 3 hours and carries 100 maximum marks, and IGNOU has alternated between two question formats across the six sessions studied. Knowing which format you are looking at decides how many answers you write and how long each one runs.
In the first format, seen in June 2023, December 2024 and June 2025, you attempt any five questions out of eight, each carrying 20 marks and answered in roughly 500 to 600 words. Short note questions appear in this format as four notes of 5 marks each.
In the second format, seen in December 2023, June 2024 and December 2025, the paper splits into Section A and Section B. Section A asks for any four answers at 15 marks each in about 500 words, and Section B asks for any four at 10 marks each in about 300 words.
The word targets used inside the file are deliberately tighter than the paper's stated limits, at roughly 450 words for a 20 mark answer, 350 for a 15 mark answer, 250 for a 10 mark answer and 150 for a 5 mark note. Writing to a tight target in practice leaves you room to expand in the hall rather than run out of time.
Budget roughly 30 minutes for each 20 mark answer and never leave a chosen question half written. A complete 350 word answer scores better than a brilliant 600 word answer that stops mid sentence because the bell went.
