Course Overview

BCS 111 Solved Guess Paper is a 22 page answer booklet prepared for students who are sitting the Computer Basics and PC Software paper of IGNOU's Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA_NEW / BCA_NEWOL). It carries 12 questions, every one of them answered in full, and those 12 questions together account for 160 marks of examinable content across the three blocks of the course.

IGNOU prints this paper as BCS-011 / BCS-111 on the same question sheet, so one booklet serves students under both the archived and the current course code. The target sittings are the June 2026 and December 2026 Term End Examinations.

What the BCS 111 Solved Guess Paper 2026 Contains

The booklet contains 12 fully answered questions worth 160 marks, spread over 22 pages and drawn from all three blocks of Computer Basics and PC Software. Nothing in it is a bare question list. Each question arrives with its marks weight, its block and unit address, the sittings it last appeared in, and a complete written answer.

The internal layout is deliberately repetitive, because that is what helps under exam pressure. Every answer opens with a quoted definition from the IGNOU textbook, moves into numbered points, and ends with a one line conclusion. Once you have read two answers you already know where to look in the third.

Three short strategy pages sit at the back of the file. One sets out the exam pattern and word targets, one lists the topics that are not worth heavy preparation, and one describes the presentation habits that earn marks from evaluators reading hundreds of scripts.

Sample Questions with Answers from the BCS 111 Guess Paper

Five of the twelve answers are reproduced below in full, exactly as they appear in the file. They are taken from different blocks and different mark bands so you can judge the writing before you buy rather than after. The remaining seven answers are in the complete booklet.

Perform the following number system conversions

Question: (i) Convert (124.5)10 to Binary (ii) Convert (110101101010)2 to Hexadecimal (iii) Convert (CBA)16 to Binary (iv) Convert (574)8 to Decimal (v) Convert (10101)2 to Decimal.

Meaning of number system. A number system having base r will have r distinct symbols; digital computers use the binary number system because they use signals having two distinct values. (IGNOU textbook, Functioning of a Computer)

(i) Decimal (124.5)10 to Binary. Integer part 124 by successive division by 2: 124/2 = 62 r 0; 62/2 = 31 r 0; 31/2 = 15 r 1; 15/2 = 7 r 1; 7/2 = 3 r 1; 3/2 = 1 r 1; 1/2 = 0 r 1. Reading remainders bottom up gives 1111100. Fraction part 0.5 × 2 = 1.0, which gives 1. Hence (124.5)10 = (1111100.1)2.

(ii) Binary (110101101010)2 to Hexadecimal. Group the bits in fours from the right: 1101 0110 1010. Replace each group by its hex digit: 1101 = D, 0110 = 6, 1010 = A. Hence (110101101010)2 = (D6A)16.

(iii) Hexadecimal (CBA)16 to Binary. Replace each hex digit by its 4 bit binary equivalent: C = 1100, B = 1011, A = 1010. Hence (CBA)16 = (110010111010)2.

(iv) Octal (574)8 to Decimal. Apply positional weights of base 8: 5 × 8² + 7 × 8¹ + 4 × 8⁰ = 320 + 56 + 4 = 380. Hence (574)8 = (380)10.

(v) Binary (10101)2 to Decimal. Positional sum of the weights of 2: 1 × 2⁴ + 0 × 2³ + 1 × 2² + 0 × 2¹ + 1 × 2⁰ = 16 + 4 + 1 = 21. Hence (10101)2 = (21)10.

Conclusion. Each conversion uses a fixed rule: successive division for decimal to binary, four bit grouping between binary and hexadecimal, and positional weights for octal or binary to decimal.

Describe the structure of the CPU and explain its components

Question: "CPU is a complex IC chip having millions of transistors." Describe the structure of the CPU and explain its components with the help of a diagram.

Meaning of CPU. The Central Processing Unit is like the brain of the computer; it is responsible for executing instructions and it controls and coordinates their execution. It comprises a Control Unit, an Arithmetic and Logic Unit, and registers. (IGNOU textbook, Functioning of a Computer)

The CPU is a semiconductor integrated circuit chip consisting of a large number of transistors; in personal computers it is also called the microprocessor. Modern CPUs can perform 400 to 550 machine instructions directly through built in logic, and execution of every instruction involves almost all parts of the CPU.

1. Control Unit. It controls the execution of instructions by decoding each instruction and generating the micro operations needed to carry it out. The Control Unit also coordinates input and output devices and the flow of data between memory and the ALU.

2. Arithmetic and Logic Unit. It performs arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and logic operations such as comparison, AND, OR and NOT. The ALU is where actual data processing happens.

3. Registers. Small, very high speed storage locations inside the CPU that hold the operands and the result of each micro operation. Registers minimise repeated memory access and speed up execution.

Instruction format. Every instruction has two parts: an opcode that specifies the operation to be performed, and operands that provide the data on which the operation is to be performed. The entire set of instructions a processor can execute directly through hardware logic is called its instruction set.

Conclusion. The three units collaborate on every machine instruction: the Control Unit decodes, the ALU computes, and registers hold operands and results.

What are operating systems and what services do they offer

Question: What are Operating Systems? Explain various services offered by an operating system. Also describe in brief the evolution of operating systems.

Concept. An operating system is system software which may be viewed as an organised collection of software consisting of procedures for operating a computer and providing an environment for execution of programs. It acts as an interface between users and the hardware of a computer system. (IGNOU textbook, Operating System)

It manages memory, processor, file system and input and output devices, keeping track of the status of each resource and deciding which process gets control, for how long and when. Examples include UNIX, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Linux.

1. Command processor and user interface. The most visible service, it accepts commands and runs them. Two forms exist: the Graphical User Interface using drop down menus and mouse clicks, and the Command Line Interface using typed commands. UNIX shells such as C, Bourne and Korn extend this flexibility.

2. File management system. It maintains the mapping between a file's logical name and its physical storage location, allocates and frees space, provides directory structures for each device, and protects files by limiting access to authorised users only.

3. Input and output services. The operating system provides device drivers for every device installed on the system. These drivers accept requests and perform the actual data transfer between hardware and memory. In Windows this is known as plug and play.

4. Process control management. A process is an executing program. The operating system schedules processes, allocates resources, synchronises shared resources and provides inter process communication. Modern systems also support smaller execution units called threads, which share memory inside the same process.

5. Memory management. The memory manager keeps track of which parts of memory are in use, maintains queues of programs waiting to be loaded, and allocates or de-allocates memory as space becomes available. This is what makes multiprogramming possible.

Brief evolution. The late 1940s and 1950s used serial processing with no operating system. The first batch operating system was developed by General Motors for the IBM 701 in the mid 1950s. Burroughs introduced the Master Control Program in 1963, IBM launched OS/360 in 1964, and in 1969 MIT, Bell Labs and GE collaborated to design UNIX, which introduced the hierarchical file system and the shell.

Conclusion. An operating system is the software layer that converts raw hardware into a productive environment by managing commands, files, devices, processes and memory.

Explain star, bus and ring network topologies

Question: What are Network Topologies? Explain Star, Bus and Ring topologies with the help of diagrams. Also list their structures, advantages and disadvantages.

Meaning. Network topology is the study of the arrangement or mapping of the elements of a network, such as links and nodes, and the interconnection between them. It also determines the strategy for physically expanding the network in future. (IGNOU textbook, Networking and Internet)

Topology can be physical, meaning the actual layout of devices and cables, or logical, meaning how data actually flows. The textbook lists Bus, Ring, Star, Tree and Mesh, of which the first three are most commonly used.

Bus topology. A single common communication cable with a terminator at each end, onto which all computers tap. It is a passive topology where only one computer can transmit at a time. It is simple, reliable and needs the least cable, and a fault in one node does not affect the rest. Performance degrades under load and terminators are required at both cable ends.

Ring topology. Also called circular topology, where each node connects to exactly two neighbours to form a closed loop. Data travels in one direction and each computer retransmits what it receives. IBM Token Ring and FDDI are examples. Access is equal through the token and no central server is needed, but adapter cards are costly and one bad node can disrupt the whole network.

Star topology. Each computer communicates with a central hub that re-sends the message to the destination. A four port hub connects up to four machines and larger networks need multiple hubs. Failure of one cable does not affect others and devices are easy to add or remove, but installation costs more cable and the whole network depends on the hub.

Conclusion. Bus is the cheapest and simplest, Ring offers fair token based access, and Star is the most reliable and the most popular for modern local area networks.

Sample 5Block 2, Unit 1 Software Evolution10 marksAppeared Jun 2025, Dec 2024, Dec 2023, Jun 2023

What is perverse software and how can users counter it

Question: What are perverse softwares (Malwares)? Explain any four perverse softwares and how can users counter and control such softwares in their systems? Also describe techniques used by antivirus programs.

Meaning. Malware is software designed to secretly access a computer system without the owner's consent and damage the system. The impact can be as damaging as shutting down a business or pulling down a computer network. (IGNOU textbook, Software Evolution)

1. Computer virus. A small program that enters a computer without permission, attaches itself to a document or program, replicates and spreads. Some only replicate; others destroy files and degrade performance. Examples include Randex, Melissa.A and Trj.Reboot.

2. Computer worm. Similar to a virus but it self replicates and actively spreads over the network, copying itself between drives or through email without needing user action. Examples include PSWBugbear.B, Lovgate.F and Sobig.D.

3. Trojan horse. A program disguised as something desirable. Users are tempted to download and install it, after which it deletes files or installs further unwanted software. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses neither infect other files nor self replicate.

4. Spyware. Designed for commercial gain, it gathers information about the user in a concealed manner, displays pop up advertisements and redirects search results to paid advertisements. Rootkits, trap doors, logic bombs and keystroke loggers are related forms.

Countermeasures. Keep the operating system and all programs patched; install a spam filter and spam blocker; watch what you click and install while browsing rather than accepting pop ups; install antivirus software and scan and update it regularly; install anti spyware and anti adware and scan regularly.

Antivirus techniques. Signature based detection compares file contents to a known pattern of data. Heuristic based detection identifies unknown viruses by looking for malicious code or its variations. File emulation runs the suspect program in a virtual environment and analyses its actions.

Conclusion. Malware thrives on user inaction, so disciplined patching, scanning and cautious browsing, combined with signature, heuristic and emulation based tools, keep the system safe.

Those five answers are the whole of samples 1 to 5. If you are still assembling the full set of reading for this paper, our BCS 111 Study Material collection holds the block wise notes that sit behind this table, and reading a unit there before attempting its guess paper question is usually the faster order.

How This BCS 111 Solved Guess Paper Was Built from Previous Year Papers

The 12 questions were chosen by reading five consecutive Term End papers, June 2023 through June 2025, and counting what actually recurs. Question selection was not based on what looks important in the textbook, because those two lists are rarely the same.

The method had three passes. First, every question from the five sittings was tagged to its block and unit. Second, topics were counted by how many of the five papers they appeared in. Third, topics that were heavily used in older papers but absent from June 2025 were promoted, since IGNOU tends to rotate rather than retire its favourite questions.

You can check the base data yourself. IGNOU publishes the question papers openly, and the June 2025 BCS-011 / BCS-111 paper is the most recent sitting in the sample. Comparing it against the index above will show you how the number system, CPU, operating system and IP addressing questions carried through.

For students who want to run the same exercise across more sittings, our IGNOU Previous Year Question Paper archive has the earlier BCA papers in one place, and half an hour spent marking up two of them teaches you more about the paper's habits than any summary can.

Answers were then written strictly against the IGNOU self learning material for this course, which is available on eGyanKosh. Nothing was pulled from general internet sources, because an answer that uses vocabulary the evaluator does not recognise from the block tends to score below one that mirrors the textbook.

BCS 111 Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution for the Term End Examination

BCS 111 is a 100 mark, 3 hour paper with 75% weightage, in which Question 1 is compulsory and carries 40 marks and you attempt any three of the remaining questions at 20 marks each. That structure decides how the guess paper should be used.

Question 1 is where the paper is won or lost. It is broken into six to nine sub parts of 4 to 10 marks each, and those sub parts range widely across the syllabus. This is why the booklet covers 160 marks of material rather than a tidy 100.

The word targets that go with the marks are worth memorising: roughly 450 words for a 20 mark question, 250 words for a 10 mark question, and 150 words for a 5 mark question. Writing 400 words for a 5 mark sub part costs you time you will need later in the paper.

Diagrams carry marks of their own. Where the question says "with the help of a diagram", a labelled figure is expected, and BCS 111 asks for one often: topologies, the CPU block, three tier client server, the IPv4 address layout and hard disk organisation all appear in that form.

BCS 111 Important Questions Ranked by Repeat Frequency

Four topics appeared in four of the five papers studied: operating system services, network topologies, IP addressing with DNS, and perverse software. If your preparation time is nearly gone, those four are where it should go first.

The last two rows deserve a note. Both appeared only twice, yet both are marked high, because neither was asked in June 2025. A topic that has been rested for one sitting is a common candidate for the next, which is why recency gaps are treated as a signal rather than an absence.

Practical File and Lab Work Position of BCS 111 in the BCA Programme

BCS 111 is a theory course and has no practical file of its own, so nothing of that kind is included in this guess paper. Saying so plainly matters, because students often assume every computing course carries a lab submission.

The practical side of this material sits in a separate course, BCSL-013 Computer Basics and PC Software Lab, which runs alongside BCS 111 in Semester 1 of the BCA_NEW and BCA_NEWOL programmes. That is where the hands on work with the operating system, word processor, spreadsheet and presentation tools is recorded and assessed.

What this booklet does include, in place of a practical index, is the question index and the block and unit map above. Between them they function as the contents page for the file, showing you exactly what is answered and where each answer belongs in the syllabus.

Students preparing the whole semester rather than one paper often work through a BCA Guess Paper set for the other Semester 1 courses at the same time, since the mathematics and communication papers reward a very different answer shape from this one.

Who Should Use the BCS 111 Guess Paper and Who Should Not

This booklet suits students who have limited time before the exam and need ready written answers in the textbook's own vocabulary. It is not a replacement for the blocks, and we would rather say that here than have you discover it in the exam hall.

It fits you well if you are a working student revising in the last two or three weeks, if you have a backlog attempt in BCS 111 and want to target the recurring questions, or if you can follow the concepts but lose marks because your written answers are unstructured.

It fits you poorly if you have not opened the study material at all. Twelve answers cannot cover a compulsory 40 mark question that spans six to nine sub parts. Read the blocks first, then use this to convert that reading into answers of the right length and shape.

It is also worth being clear that no guess paper predicts a question paper. What this one does is rank probability from evidence and give you a written answer for each ranked topic. Students who want the same treatment for their other courses can browse the full IGNOU Solved Guess Paper library and pick by course code.

BCS 111 Guess Paper FAQs for IGNOU BCA Students

Is the BCS 111 Solved Guess Paper valid for the June 2026 exam?

Yes. The file targets both the June 2026 and December 2026 Term End Examinations, which are the only two sittings IGNOU conducts each year. Question selection is based on five papers from June 2023 to June 2025, and the syllabus for Computer Basics and PC Software has not changed across that period, so the same twelve topics remain live for both 2026 sittings.

How many questions are there in the BCS 111 guess paper with answers?

There are 12 questions, all of them answered in full across 22 pages. Together they carry 160 marks of examinable content, which is deliberately more than the 100 mark paper, because Question 1 alone is compulsory and spans six to nine sub parts. Five of the twelve answers are published in full on this page as samples.

Are BCS 111 guess paper answers written from the IGNOU textbook?

Yes. Every answer opens with a quoted definition from the IGNOU self learning material for this course and stays within that vocabulary throughout. No content is taken from general internet sources. This matters at evaluation, because an answer that uses the block's own terms is easier for the examiner to match against the marking scheme.

Does the BCS 111 guess paper cover all three blocks of Computer Basics and PC Software?

Yes. All three blocks are represented: Basics of Computer Hardware, Basics of Computer Software and Internet Technologies. Nine of the twelve units are answered directly, and the remaining three units surface through the compulsory Question 1 sub parts. The block and unit table on this page shows the exact mapping, so you can see which unit every one of the twelve answers belongs to.

Is a practical file included with the BCS 111 guess paper?

No, and none is needed. BCS 111 is a theory course with no practical submission attached to it. The laboratory work for this material belongs to a separate course, BCSL-013 Computer Basics and PC Software Lab, which is assessed independently in Semester 1 of the BCA programme. This booklet covers the theory paper only, and its question index doubles as the contents page.

Can I pass BCS 111 by studying only this guess paper?

We would not promise that. Twelve answers cannot cover a compulsory 40 mark question that reaches across the whole syllabus. Students who have read the blocks and use this booklet to structure their answers do very well. Students who open it two days before the exam with no prior reading are taking a real risk.

How do I receive the complete BCS 111 guess paper file after ordering?

Message 9899436384 on WhatsApp with your course code, programme code and exam session. Our team replies with pricing, and once the order is confirmed the PDF is sent on the same WhatsApp chat, usually within minutes during working hours. There is no printed dispatch and no waiting for courier delivery, so you can begin revising the same day.

Is the BCS 111 guess paper the same as the one for BCS 011?

Yes, one file serves both. IGNOU prints this paper with the heading BCS-011 / BCS-111, meaning students under the archived code and the current BCA_NEW code sit the identical question paper. The booklet is labelled for both codes, so re-registered students do not need a separate version and can order using whichever code appears on their record.
